NEW YORK CITY — For the second straight night, demonstrators rallied in support of a Staten Island bar that has been blatantly violating coronavirus restrictions despite the rising spread of the virus in the area.More than 100 protesters packed the area outside Mac's Public House on Wednesday night to support the bar that New York City Sheriff's deputies shut down on Tuesday.Demonstrators questioned the reasoning behind COVID-19 restrictions and were critical that certain businesses — like chain retail stores — were allowed to stay open while local bars have been shut down.On Tuesday, the New York Sheriff's Office initiated surveillance at Mac's Public House after receiving numerous complaints that the bar was violating state health orders that have shuttered indoor dining at restaurants and instituted a 10 p.m. curfew.Deputies said that a sign on the bar's window declares itself in an "autonomous zone."Authorities said plain-clothes deputies went in, were seated at an indoor table, and were able to order food and alcoholic beverages in exchange for a mandatory "donation" of .Deputies also say they saw other patrons also eating and drinking inside the bar.At 5:40 p.m., deputies entered the establishment through the unlocked front door and found 14 people inside the bar.The sheriff's office said the deputies issued appearance tickets to multiple employees, including a bartender and cook, for various violations of city and state laws.Co-owner and manager Daniel Presti was arrested for obstructing governmental administration when he refused to leave the business, officials said.Presti, 34, was taken to the sheriff's office, issued appearance tickets and released from custody, according to authorities.Following the arrest, about a dozen officers lined up in front of the bar, blocking patrons from entering.On Tuesday night, the sheriff's Office said a crowd of about 50 people showed up to protest the shutdown. NORFOLK, Va. - An Old Dominion University student wants to see more African-American Physicists.She and others are making efforts to make this a reality and they are looking for mentors in the Hampton Roads community.“I love Accelerated Physics,” Kat Watkins, a junior at ODU said. She is passionate about physics and has been since childhood.She recently started the group Society of Black Physicists at ODU.The American Institute of Physics found that fewer than four percent of bachelor’s degrees went to black students for Physics and there's a nationwide effort to change this and to increase the number of African American Physicists.“Knowing all of this, hearing these numbers and being in a very small population of people, it's very hard to find the representation,” said Watkins.With the support of her adviser Dr. Matthew Nerem, an ODU Professor, and other students, she created the organization.“To provide a place for a person of color to feel home, you may be the only one in your class, you may be the only one that you see, but your experience is not singular, you're not alone. So that's why I started S.B.P.,” said Watkins.Physics student Jade Hooper is also part of the group. “Right now, I'm pretty much, if not in all of my classes, most of them, not just the only black female, but the only black person in the classroom and so from that standpoint, it kind of puts me in a position where sometimes I don't feel comfortable,” said Hooper, “My colleagues who are not the minority, they never have to go into a classroom or a building and wonder am I going to be the only white person in the classroom.”“If we want to have a proper representation, based on the population size, we need to bring up the number of Ph.D... by like almost eight times,” said Dr. Nerem.Watkins said her group is looking for mentors throughout the Hampton Roads region to help the students. She said the students also are looking at ways to reach children in hopes of getting kids interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.“We really just want to spread our roots out into the community,” said Watkins, “We want to inspire little ones. We want to inspire young minds too.”“It’s very important that these teens and the students can see a representation, somebody like me and Kat who will make it in this field so that they have somebody to look up to,” said Hooper.“Studying physics just gives people the opportunity to try and explore the universe, what we're composed of,” said Dr. Nerem.You don't have to be African American to join the group or mentor, you just need to support their mission: "The mission of the Society of Black Physicists is to promote the professional development and well-being of ethnic minority STEM students within the international scientific community and within society at large. Nestlé Prepared Foods is recalling more than 92,000 pounds of its Lean Cuisine Baked Chicken frozen meals after receiving complaints from consumers finding plastic pieces in their meals.On Saturday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically white hard plastic pieces.The agency believes that the mashed potatoes used in the meal were contaminated with pieces of a plastic conveyor belt that broke during production.According to the press release, the products were produced and packaged on September 2, 2020, and shipped nationwide. The products bear the establishment number "EST.P-9018," which can be found on the side of the case near the lot number, the agency said.They have a best before date of October 2021.Although they have not received any reports of illness or injury, FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' freezers.FSIS advises that if you have purchased the recall item, throw it away or return it to where you bought it. 1088

NEW YORK CITY — Police are looking for a man they say assaulted a New York City bus driver who asked him to put on a mask before boarding the Manhattan bus.According to the NYPD, the unidentified man attempted to get on the northbound New York City Transit Authority (MTA) bus near Madison Avenue and East 29th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday without a mandatory face covering.The bus driver, 62, stopped the man, telling him he had to put on a mask to ride the bus, police said.According to authorities, the man punched the bus driver in the face before fleeing the bus in an unknown direction.The victim suffered pain and swelling and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.Face coverings or masks are required on all MTA buses, subways and trains as the city continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.The NYPD has released the above surveillance images of the man for whom they're searching.This story was originally published by Mark Sundstrom and Rebecca Solomon on WPIX in New York City. 1022
