Scott Peters described his trip to a migrant detention center near McAllen, Texas, as "stunningly depressing.""The single men were being held in a series of rooms, each built for say 8-10 people and I think they had 40 people in them ... The faces of these men just looking out with desperate looks through these windows, some of them shirtless, it's obviously very hot in those places," the Democratic congressman said of his July 13 visit.Peters described the stench from the facility due to the inability for the men to shower. He said another holding facility the size of a convention center, had women and children in rooms divided by chain-link fence. "For the small children there's a small area where they can have toys. There's a few tragic sights you see of four or five-year-olds who are unaccompanied," he said.He said San Diego isn't dealing with nearly as many migrants compared to Texas, "the night before we arrived they picked up 2,000 people." He said he's proud of how San Diegans have stepped up, creating a migrant shelter downtown to fill in the gaps created with new laws meant to speed up the process."They do the intake, provide medical assessments, and then get these people on their way so that they can be out on their way with their family around the country and ready for their asylum hearing," he said.Ultimately he said there needs to be change at the southern border and in the countries causing their citizens to flee. 1490

(KGTV) - The California Department of Vehicles is reaching out to state residents to make sure they have a valid REAL ID ahead of the 2020 federal deadline. REAL ID cardholders who presented only one residency document when they applied must confirm their address by mail, DMV officials say. The DMV sent 3.6 million letters to cardholders, asking them to verify their mailing address and return the letter to the agency. Anyone who lost or did not receive a letter by Aug. 15 can request one through an online form, DMV officials say. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, all travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other TSA-approved identification, such as a passport or military ID, to fly within the United States. 736

A 9-year-old boy retrieved a gun from his parents' bedroom and shot his 13-year-old sister to death, authorities said, after the two got into an argument over a video game controller.The incident occurred over the weekend in rural Monroe County, Mississippi, as the children's mother was preparing lunch in the kitchen, the country sheriff said."He wanted the controller, and I guess he knew where to find the gun," Sheriff Cecil Cantrell told CNN.The boy grabbed a handgun, which was kept in a nightstand next to the bed, and shot the sister in the back of the head, the sheriff said."This is the first time I've ever dealt with any child that was shot like that," Cantrell said. A 66-year-old woman was arrested and preliminarily charged Wednesday with driving into protesters in Indiana.According to the Associated Press, the woman police arrested was Christi Bennett.Hundreds of people were rallying and protesting through Bloomington Monday, following an alleged racist attack at Lake Monroe where several men attacked and apparently attempted to lynch Vauhxx Booker, a Monroe County Human Rights commissioner.Police say an electric scooter had been left in the roadway and a red Toyota passenger car drove up to it. A male passenger then got out and threw the scooter out of the lane of travel. That's when police say a woman approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood.The vehicle then began to accelerate, according to police, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car. A man then grabbed the car and clung to the side of it as it accelerated rapidly on Walnut Street. The man and woman remained on the vehicle until it turned abruptly onto eastbound 6th Street, throwing both people off, according to police.Police say the owner of the car was staying at a motel in Scottsburg, Indiana. They traveled to Scottsburg and detained the man and woman involved. The man was interviewed and released.
