BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Tuesday paid his final respects to renowned educator and social activist Sun Qimeng as his body was taken away to be cremated at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing.Sun died in Beijing on March 2. Top legislator Wu bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Sun's friends joined Hu in the farewell ceremony.Other senior leaders, including top political advisor Jia Qinglin, senior leader Li Changchun, vice president Xi Jinping, vice premier Li Keqiang, senior leader He Guoqiang, and senior leader Zhou Yongkang also expressed their condolences.Sun was vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the seventh and eighth National People's Congresses and honorary chairman of the seventh and eighth China Democratic National Construction Association Central Committee.Sun graduated in 1929 from the Politics Department of Soochow University in Suzhou city, and joined the Communist Party of China in 1950.He has made outstanding contributions to vocational education in China as well as to the country's development of social democracy and the legal system, said an official statement.

GUIYANG, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The eight workers who were trapped Friday in a collapsed railway tunnel in southwestern Guizhou Province were rescued Saturday afternoon.Rescuers drilled a shaft leading to the trapped workers and took them out from the tunnel. The eight people are in good health conditions and can walk with the help of the rescuers.They were sent to hospital for medical examinations.The workers were constructing the second line of Liupanshui-Zhanyi section of the Guiyang-Kunming railway when the tunnel collapsed at 1:26 a.m. Friday, said Long Qiufang, secretary-general of the Liupanshui city government. A worker is rescued from the collapsed tunnel at the building site of the second line of Liupanshui-Zhanyi section of the Guiyang-Kunming railway near Liupanshui City in southwest China's Guizhou Province, Feb. 6, 2010.The 639-kilometer railway links Guiyang, capital of Guizhou, with Kunming, capital of southwestern Yunnan Province. HONG KONG, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese and Chinese officials said here Monday that they will make joint efforts to further cement ties between the two countries, and ties between Vietnam and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).The officials made the remarks at a reception, hosted by Vietnam's Consulate General in the HKSAR, to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the People's Republic of China."The establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries on Jan. 18, 1950 is a splendid milestone in the development of relations between the two countries," said Pham Cao Phong, consul-general of Vietnam in the HKSAR.He said that the Chinese government and Chinese people have provided great support and assistance to Vietnam in its struggle for independence and freedom as well as its reform and modernization drive.On behalf of the Vietnamese government, the consul-general extended sincere gratitude to the Chinese government and the Chinese people for their support to Vietnam.He said that in recent years, relations between the two countries have developed rapidly, with cooperation in political, economic, cultural and other sectors further deepened.The year of 2010 marks the first year of the founding of ASEAN-- China Free Trade Area, and the year has also been named the Year of Vietnam-China Friendship, which Pham said will "bring relations of the two countries into a new spring."Over the past six decades, the political relations between the two countries have become mature, with the deepening of bilateral cooperation in various sectors, said Lu Xinhua, commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR, at the reception.Lu said that he hoped the two countries will carry on what has been achieved in their bilateral relations, further promote mutual trust, deepen cooperation and consolidate good neighborly relations to open a new chapter for the relations between the two countries.
