(KGTV) — An East County couple who lost their home in the Valley Fire is dreaming of a rebuild and a new, fireproof home.Earlier this month, Irving and Anita Beeman shot cellphone video of the imposing smoke plumes behind their home on West Boundary Truck Trail. It didn’t take long for the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire to reach a nearby canyon."Just like a waterfall, it was a 'firefall' down the hill. Amazing and scary," said Irving.Anita left first. Irving got out soon after, after loading up a truck bed full of belongings. He took a photo showing his property, as it began burning."My house was there and then it turned orange. Then it was a yellow ball just slightly bigger than a house. I didn’t have the heart to look back, so I just drove away," said Irving.But there was no escaping the charred reality when the couple returned. Their home of 20 years, along with two vehicles, were destroyed by the fire."Defeated. You look at it and go, 'Where do we start?'" asked Anita.They’ve just started the cleanup process, expected to take months. Their home was insured, and the couple is already envisioning the rebuild and a fire-resistant home."I don’t ever want to see my house burn down again," said Irving.Irving has sketched out this drawing of a fire-resistant home."Half of it will be in a hillside on our property. Half of it will be open space and under a concrete patio roof ... an awful lot of concrete, walls, and floors," said Irving.A water feature will encircle their home. JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi lawmakers are close to erasing the Confederate battle emblem from the 126-year-old state flag. The symbol is under criticism amid nationwide protests against racial injustice. The House and Senate voted Saturday to file a bill to remove the symbol that many see as racist. They could vote on that bill Sunday. A committee would design a new flag including the words “In God We Trust.” Voters would decide in November whether to endorse that design. Religious, education, sports and business leaders are pushing legislators to remove the Confederate symbol. Republican Gov. Tate Reeves said Saturday he will sign a bill to change the flag. 675

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Missouri family finally knows the answer to a 31-year mystery: Who murdered Fawn Cox?The Kansas City Police Department says Cox was 16 years old when she was killed in her home in July 1989, as the rest of her family slept. She was found dead in her second-floor bedroom.Monday, the department announced that it has identified the suspect in the violent murder of Cox.Detectives worked with the FBI on an investigative analysis of the evidence, which revealed the killer's identity, according to a police department spokesman.Police say the suspect died in 2006, but because he was never charged, the department isn't releasing his name.The department says it notified Cox's family of the news on Monday."It was our honor to notify her family of this news today, and we hope they might finally have some closure after decades of uncertainty and pain," wrote the department on Twitter.This story was originally published by Steve Kaut at KSHB. 971

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire crews are responding to a three-acre vegetation fire that broke out near the 16100 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Lyons Valley. The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night. The fire is burning in heavy fuels, according to Cal Fire. No structures are threatened. This comes in the midst of strong Santa Ana winds across the county. 379
