Some exports-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises in the Pearl River Delta area have felt the increasing impact of the world's economic growth slowdown and shrinking foreign demands, he noted.     The fundamental way to deal with the challenges is to deepen reform and opening up and promote development in a scientific way, said the premier.     During the visit, Wen talked with staff and managers of enterprises and urged them to attach importance to innovation.     The key to the development of a country, a nationality and an enterprise is innovation, Wen said. Only continuous innovations can enable the Chinese nation stand up in the world and enterprises become leaders of their industries, he said.     Guangdong has made great achievements in economic and social development in the past 30 years, realized a historic jump and contributed a lot to the country's reform and opening up and modernization construction, Wen said. The province should continue to take the lead in the country's reform and opening up, he added.

FUZHOU, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China's coast this year, made landfall in the southeastern Fujian Province on Monday, according to the provincial observatory.     The eye of the powerful typhoon landed at Donghan Town of Fuqing City at 10 p.m. with winds of up to 119 km per hour. Typhoon Fung Wong, which was lashing Taiwan on Monday morning, continued to strengthen as it headed toward the southeastern coast of mainland China, according to the observatory of Fujian Province. "Heavy rains and winds are expected after the eye leaves the town," an official with the flood control office of Fuqing City said.     Before the typhoon landed, Fuqing had seen torrential rain with 205 millimeters falling from midnight to 8 p.m. on Monday.     In Puxia County, the power was cut off as 15 electricity transmission lines and 498 transformer stations were damaged. But no casualties were reported.     The typhoon is also likely to bring more heavy rains and strong winds in coastal areas of the province early on Tuesday. The rainfall could exceed 200 millimeters, the meteorologists forecast.     Offshore, winds could increase to force 12, while in the coastal cities, force 7 to 9 winds were expected, according to the latest forecast of the provincial meteorological station.     Torrential rains were forecast to hit the cities of Ningde, Putian and Quanzhou as well as the provincial capital Fuzhou. CHENGDU, May 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Sichuan Provincial government said Tuesday the death toll in the province has exceeded 12,000, and is still rising.     Li Chengyun, vice governor of Sichuan, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the death toll was based on incomplete figures tallied by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. He said another 26,206 people were injured, and more than 9,400 people were buried in debris.     Li also provided a breakdown of the death toll, including 161 in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, 7,395 in Mianyang City, 2,648 in Deyang City, 959 in the provincial capital Chengdu and 700 in Guangyuan City. Other casualties were reported in cities including Ya'an, Ziyang and the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. He called on both officials and the masses in Sichuan to speed up efforts to fight the disaster and rescue themselves.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived in Sichuan Monday afternoon to oversee rescue work, ordered the clearance of rocks and mud slides that were blocking roads to the epicenter by midnight on Tuesday.     "People are trapped in debris; we must use every second," he told an emergency meeting at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.     On Tuesday afternoon, a brigade of about 20 soldiers have reached Yingxiu Town of the earthquake epicenter Wenchuan, the disaster relief headquarters in the Chengdu Military Area Command said.     The soldiers reported they saw more than 70 percent of the roads in the town were wracked, and nearly all bridges collapsed. A large number of people were believed to be under the debris.     They said 3,000 people were known to have survived, and the town's total population is 12,000. No information on detailed casualties could be available.     Li Shiming, commander of the Chengdu Military Area Command, said the soldiers had distributed food and water to children and injured people in the town, and more supplies would be airdropped to the area.

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Tuesday urged Taiwan to work together with the mainland based on four principles: "Building mutual trust, laying aside disputes, seeking consensus and shelving differences, and creating a win-win situation."    He called for substantial efforts for the welfare of Chinese compatriots on both sides, to seek peace across the Taiwan Strait and create a new situation for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.     Hu made these remarks in a meeting with Lien Chan, honorary chairman of the Kuomintang Party (KMT), his wife and his delegation, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in central Beijing. He said the principles adopted at the KMT-CPC summit in 2005 were "of epoch-making importance" and have since been the guidelines for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.     The welfare of the compatriots on both banks must be built upon the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, Lien said. Your spirit has touched all Chinese people. I hope you will soon go back to your normal lives and build a better home."     At Dujiangyan Radio and Television Station, Li urged the technicians to repair the network as soon as possible to ensure that the people in the quake zone could enjoy radio and TV programs. Li hoped they could go deep into the front line of the quake and represent the feelings of the victims, soldiers and other relief workers.     "I believe you can create many artworks that will inspire the people affected by the earthquake," Li said.     He was accompanied by Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee.     The death toll in the earthquake that jolted Sichuan Province and some other areas on May 12 rose to 69,107 as of Tuesday noon.
