SAN FRANCISCO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft announced on Tuesday that its Bing search engine will become the default search and mapping application on Blackberry phones.Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer announced the partnership with Research in Motion (RIM), which makes Blackberry phones, at the Blackberry World Conference in Orlando, Florida, according to a Microsoft blog post.Ballmer said Microsoft would invest uniquely in the Blackberry platform in addition to its own Windows Phone platform."Bing will be deeply integrated at the BlackBerry OS (operating system) level," Ballmer said.Central to the collaboration, Blackberry devices will use Bing as the preferred search provider in the browser, and Bing will be the default search and map application for new devices presented to mobile operators, both in the United States and internationally, said Microsoft's Bing team in the blog post.Meanwhile, Bing is also shipping as the default search experience and map application for the newly released Blackberry Playbook, a RIM tablet computer which made market debut on April 19.On Tuesday's Blackberry conference, Ballmer called Google's Android ecosystem "chaos" and the Apple iOS "limited" before he hailed Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry. Microsoft and RIM are both competing with Apple, which makes the iPhone and iPad, and Google, which makes the Android operating system for smartphones and tablets in the booming mobile device market.

BEIJING, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Ministry said here Thursday that almost all Chinese travellers stranded in Egypt had returned home by planes sent by the government.A total of 1,848 Chinese, including those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, had been flown back by Thursday afternoon, the ministry said in a statement.The Chinese government has organized eight flights from four Chinese airline companies to Egypt since Jan. 31.The last two planes, belonging to China Eastern Airlines, returned to Beijing from Egypt Thursday, bringing back a total of 431 Chinese citizens, according to the ministry.

LOS ANGELES, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Limiting prolonged bottle use in children may be an effective way to help prevent obesity, a new study suggests.For the study, researchers from the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University (CORETU) and the Ohio State University College of Public Health analyzed data from 6,750 children to estimate the association between bottle use at 24 months of age and the risk of obesity at 5.5 years of age, according to the Science Daily on Friday.Of the children studied, 22 percent were prolonged bottle users, meaning that at two years of age they used a bottle as their primary drink container and/or were put to bed with a calorie- containing bottle.The findings showed that nearly 23 percent of the prolonged bottle users were obese by the time they were 5.5 years old."Children who were still using a bottle at 24 months were approximately 30 percent more likely to be obese at 5.5 years, even after accounting for other factors such as the mother's weight, the child's birth weight, and feeding practices during infancy," said Dr. Robert Whitaker at CORETU, lead author of the study.Drinking from a bottle beyond infancy may contribute to obesity by encouraging the child to consume too many calories, the researchers noted."A 24-month-old girl of average weight and height who is put to bed with an eight-ounce bottle of whole milk would receive approximately 12 percent of her daily caloric needs from that bottle," explained co-author Rachel Gooze.Gooze noted that weaning children from the bottle by the time they are one year of age is unlikely to cause harm and may prevent obesity. The authors suggested that pediatricians and other health professionals work with parents to find acceptable solutions for stopping bottle use at the child's first birthday.The findings adds new evidence to the theory that obesity prevention should begin before children enter school, the researchers said.

BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority announced on Monday that it has received 7.5 million yuan from the country's Ministry of Finance to strengthen its efforts in fighting persistent drought in some regions.The fund would be used to support efforts by meteorological departments in Shanxi, Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan provinces, all major crop-producing regions, to conduct activities for seeding clouds and making artificial rain, according to a statement posted on the National Meteorological Administration website.Government data shows that a prolonged drought since last October had affected 108.24 million mu (7.22 million hectares) of wheat crops in those provinces, as well as Jiangsu, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, as of Sunday.The statement added that some of the affected regions experienced two rounds of snowfall last week, which were helpful in alleviating the drought. However, the major wheat-growing provinces of Shandong and Henan recorded no rainfall.The country's meteorological authority also predicted no significant rainfall or heavy snowfall for the dry regions over the next three days. BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The exchange rate against the US dollar is currently at an appropriate level but could fluctuate in the future, Yi Gang, vice-governor of the central bank and head of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, said on Sunday."In the future, as markets fluctuate and labor productivity changes, the rate will certainly show some fluctuation," he said at a seminar. Last Thursday, the yuan's central parity rate rose to a record high of 6.5849 against the US dollar, after rising for three consecutive trading days, before declining to 6.5952 on Friday.The yuan has appreciated about 3.6 percent against the dollar since mid-June. A report from the US Treasury said earlier that on an inflation-adjusted basis, the appreciation was even higher, at an annual rate of more than 10 percent.US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said last Wednesday that China's recent measures to control inflation by raising interest rates is "surprising" and urged Beijing to let its currency rise in value.Currently the exchange rate is still underestimated by no more than 10 percent, said Lu Mai, secretary-general of the China Development Research Foundation (CDRF).The resilience of exporters to the rising yuan is stronger than previously estimated, which helps to pave the way for more currency reform to liberalize the yuan, he said.In 2007 and 2008, the Chinese currency rose by 7 percent annually against the US dollar, but China's GDP only declined by 0.28 percentage points, with inflation down by 0.42 points and workers' wages up by 0.07 points, according to CDRF research."The figures showed that progressive currency reform since July 2005 was successful, and the government should accelerate the reform and further free the yuan in the next five years to promote healthy, long-term economic development," Lu said.China should keep the proportion of its trade surplus to GDP within 5 percent, and avoid further increasing its huge foreign exchange reserves to allow the currency to settle at a balanced level, he said.China's foreign reserves rose to a record .85 trillion at the end of last year, an 18.7 percent increase year-on-year, according to statistics from the People's Bank of China, the central bank.Yi said he took note of the CDRF findings, but emphasized that further moves depended on both the domestic and international economic situation and appropriate timing.Lu Feng, an economist at Peking University, said now is the right time to deepen currency reform and let the yuan trade at a higher price as inflation is rising.Analysts have predicted that the yuan will appreciate this year as inflation may see the government opt for a rising yuan to lower the cost of purchasing international commodities.Lian Ping, chief economist at the Bank of Communications, predicted the yuan would rise by 5 to 7 percent in 2011.
