A new reported loophole in the federal financial aid process is raising concerns about fairness. According to multiple reports, some parents from Illinois are giving up guardianship of their child before they go to college. It gives the student “independent status,” which can help them qualify for more student debt since their parents’ income isn’t considered.Emily Goodman, from the Partnership for College Completion, says she’s disappointed, but she’s not surprised. Goodman helps kids from low-income backgrounds finish college.“They’re really taking away opportunity for our low-income students in our state who may be the only access to college,” she says. “The only pathway to college is through state financial aid.”The reports say more than 40 families in question came from some of the wealthiest places in Illinois: Lake County.State Representative La Shawn Ford is working to close the loophole to make the system fairer. “These parents that really have the ability to pay are robbing the dreams of certain families and their kids the ability to go to college,” Ford says.He says the practice isn’t technically illegal, so any impactful change would have to happen on the federal level. He plans to crack down on private college admission businesses that allegedly pointed parents to this practice.“They can have some type of restrictions on how they guide and drive people to these types of immoral behaviors," Rep. A Maui woman who went missing more than two weeks ago in Hawaii after a hike has been found alive.Amanda Eller, 35, vanished after she got injured and lost during the hike on Maui, according to a post on a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. She was reported missing May 9 after hiking at Makawao Forest Reserve on the island. Police found her car in the parking lot.Eller was lost somewhere above Twin Falls in between two waterfalls down a deep ravine in a creek bed. A United Airlines flight made an unscheduled stop at Washington Dulles International Airport on Friday after an odor in the cabin left passengers feeling ill.Flight 1675 from Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) was en route to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), when it landed at Dulles at about 7:45 a.m.The plane landed without incident, according to a statement from Dulles International Airport. The Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene and transported seven passengers to local hospitals for evaluation, the statement said.Raman Santra, one of the passengers on the flight, said that there was a "faint fuel smell" in the cabin before departure. The odor became "quite strong while in the air" and several passengers complained of nausea, chest pain and trouble breathing, Santra said.United Airlines canceled the flight and informed passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, required "prolonged ventilation system maintenance," Santra said.Santra's wife, Jo Palmer, was one of the seven hospitalized because she had more acute symptoms.
