SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are asking for the public’s help identifying several suspects they say robbed a man before threatening him with a gun.The robbery happened on August 11 around 5:24 p.m. near the Forever 21 at Fashion Valley Mall.Police say the two suspects approached a 27-year-old and asked to use his iPhone before grabbing it and running away.When the victim ran after both men, the second suspect pulled a gun out of his waistband and told the victim he “did not want any of this.”RELATED: 0,000 stolen cello returned to ownerFearing he would be shot, the victim stopped chasing the suspects, who were last seen running toward Friars Road. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One person was killed in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 805 in the South Bay that forced lane closures and led to a heavy traffic backup during the Wednesday morning commute.Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol reported a crash involving a Nissan pickup truck colliding with a Caltrans truck that was working along the side of northbound I-805 near Bonita Road.CHP officials determined that a Toyota Yaris struck the pickup, causing it to slam into the back of the Caltrans truck, which was hauling asphalt.CHECK TRAFFIC CONDITIONS10News learned the Nissan's driver died at the hospital after sustaining injuries from the wreck.Yaris' driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.No other injuries were reported, and CHP officials said the crash is under investigation.The crash and clean-up led to the closure of at least two lanes on northbound I-805 at Bonita Road. The onramp from Bonita Road to northbound I-805 was also shut down.The closures caused a traffic jam that extended south past Palomar Street in Chula Vista.To alleviate some of the gridlock, the CHP opened the HOV lanes to all vehicles. 1207

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents at a charter school in Chollas View are sounding the alarm after learning the fate of their founder and current director is now uncertain.This past spring, Patricio Ramirez graduated from Gompers Preparatory Academy with a full scholarship to San Diego State University."My son is first generation. This is a dream come true," said his mother, Theressah Rodirugez.But Theressah and her husband Victor, who have another son in 9th grade, are suddenly worried for his future."I am heartbroken," said Victor Ramirez.He's heartbroken after learning San Diego Unified plans to end a unique agreement to loan out staff to the school, which began when the school was founded in 2004."It was one of the lowest performing schools in the district. Very violent campus and gang infected," said school alum and education advocate Ellen Nash.Nash says when the school made the switch to a charter school, the district agreed to loan out a handful of staff, including then principal Vincent Riveroll, along with college counselors and support staff."He changed the culture to a college-going campus," said Nash.Nash says Riveroll set high educational standards, recruited and trained teachers, and implemented tutoring, after-school and summer school programs.This past spring, nearly 100% of the school's senior class was college bound."In an underserved community, they have a star in that community," said Nash.She worries it will turn into a fallen star without the school district's longstanding support, and the presence of Riveroll.In a memo released by the school district, officials point out there is more legal liability in loaning out staff, as the district has ended these agreements district-wide, thus turning the schools into traditional charter schools.School district officials points out the school already reimburses the them for the staff members' salaries. They're trying to confirm how much of the benefits - including retirement benefits - are also reimbursed by the school.The school district is set to end the on-loan program in July 2021. 2086
