CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sweetwater Unified School District officials said Thursday they are investigating an incident in which someone disrupted an online classroom by playing inappropriate audio.According to a district spokesperson, the incident happened Wednesday during a session taught by an Olympian High School teacher. The incident was reported by both a student and the teacher.Audio described as "sexual" in nature was played in the virtual classroom.District spokesperson Manny Rubio told 10News that the source of the audio is unlikely to be a hacker, and that a student or students cooperated in the disruption."Each course has an access code and we believe there are other students using those codes to enter and create disruptions," said Rubio. "Our IT staff is looking to identify the specific sources."It's unknown if the school or district requires students to use cameras to attend the online classroom. The district's 25 campuses matriculated over 40,000 students for online classes this school year, which started Monday. Students have been assigned equipment and software to access their virtual classes, including Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Rubio said that since Monday, there have a few similar incidences of disruption but that a great majority of students are having positive experiences. Officials had not sent a notice to district families at the time of this report.Stay with ABC 10News on this developing story. 1459

CHULA VISTA, Calif., (KGTV) -- No justice served. That is what a Chula Vista father said after he found out that the boys and young men who publicly attacked his son in April already got out of jail. Punch after punch. Kick after kick. Cell phone video shows 16-year-old Paul Martin being beaten while lying helplessly in the fetal position. "Our family changed since that day. It's not the same," Paul's father, Margarito Martin, told 10News. RELATED: Otay Ranch family upset over violent videoThey have not been the same since April 11, 2019. Margarito said his son was at the Cotixan Mexican Restaurant in Otay Ranch after school, defending a friend who had been bullied on social media. That is when seven people robbed and violently assaulted him. Police later arrested five minors and two adults. Investigators found that some of them were wearing cleats for maximum damage. Martin said miraculously, Paul only sustained scrapes, bruises, and a sprained wrist. "They knew what they were doing," Martin said. "They're not kids. They were 18, 19, and one of them was already 20."After a lengthy trial, the attackers were convicted of felony assault. But they were only sentenced to time served. 19-year-olds Aldrin Uy of Paradise Hills and Kent Pasunting of North Bay Terraces received years probation. All seven are now back on the street. RELATED: Family to hold protest outside Chula Vista restaurant after violent video surfacesMartin said he is still in shock of the seemingly lenient sentences for the boys and men who nearly killed his son. The judge cited "restorative justice" for their lighter sentences. "If you injure anybody or assault anybody, [they should] be sentenced more heavily," Martin said. That is why the family is now fighting to change the law regarding juvenile and young adult offenders. They have started a change.org petition to lower the age for adult charges when dealing with serious felonies. "I know they are minors, and they need another chance," Martin said. "We've all been there. Bad stuff when we were kids. Graffiti and that stuff, you're only affecting property. What we want to do is if some minors affect other people physically or assault people, be treated like an adult, and punish them more severely."RELATED: Teens accused in brutal assault at Chula Vista restaurant deny allegationsThe Martin family is also working on creating a non-profit organization called "No Mas" or "No More" to help victims of bullying and violence. 2486

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista could be the next city to make outdoor dining easier for several restaurants. The city says it’s established a free permitting process for Third Avenue businesses, between E and G Streets, to move indoor operations outside amid a new round of coronavirus-related closures across the state. The businesses will be allowed to expand into the public right-of-way, giving them the option to create a large dining area while adhering to social distancing measures.“This will provide the businesses outdoor options using tables and canopies while having social distancing and queuing areas for sidewalk cafes and curb cafes. Businesses on Third Avenue would be able to create a larger outdoor dining experience as public health mandates currently have indoor dining closed,” a city release stated. The city also approved a temporary closure of Third Avenue on the weekends, between E and G St., through January 2021 for businesses to expand outdoor dining. This plan would have to be approved by the Third Avenue Village Association to go into effect, the city says. This week, the city also approved a .5 million grant for small businesses to be reimbursed for the costs of business interruptions due to pandemic closures. The grant, called Chula Vista CARES, is funded through the federal CARES Act funds.For-profit businesses located in commercial or industrial space in the city, with ten or fewer employees, and who were required to closed due to COVID-19 can apply between July 20, at 7 a.m. and July 24, at 7 p.m. for a portion of the grant. The maximum a business can receive will be ,000. To be fair, the city says businesses will be selected in a lottery format.“Small businesses are the backbone of Chula Vista’s economy and are a critical part of our community’s economic recovery from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This program is one way of many we are working to show our business community how much we care about their recovery and longevity in Chula Vista,” said Mayor Mary Casillas Salas. For more information on the grant, click here. 2096
