SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Evacuations across San Diego County during large wildfires will look different this fire season due to the pandemic.Sean Mahoney, Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross Southern California Region, said they've put together a plan for families that could be impacted by wildfires this year.Mahoney said it starts with the temporary evacuation points, where families can initially go after being evacuated. That is a place for them to safety wait until firefighters can get the fire under control and to receive information.Mahoney said buildings like community centers and libraries have traditionally served as temporary evacuation points, but putting people indoors now carries risk due to COVID-19.This year, the Red Cross has identified several possible temporary evacuation points that would be safer during the pandemic. Many are local school parking lots. Instead of waiting indoors, they will ask for families to remain in their vehicles until a Red Cross worker can attend to them."We would approach their window, we would have a mask, and we would get their cell numbers, and from that point on, we can use cell phones to give them updates," Mahoney said.Mahoney added they picked parking structures with shade so families can be more comfortable.In cases where families need to be sheltered overnight, Mahoney said they have two plans, depending on the situation."If there are just a small number of people displaced, we'll put them in hotel rooms we'll have Red Cross people in the hotels, and then we'll just have to adjust feeding them as well," Mahoney said. "It'll be much more costly, but we have a responsibility, and it's our mission to provide sheltering and feeding folks on the worst day of their lives, and we take it very seriously."In cases where they have to establish an overnight shelter, Mahoney said they would look to set up several shelters with fewer people at each one. Space and capacity would be factors."Certainly at the shelters, our staff will be wearing masks, and taking those precautions as far advanced cleaning and separating people and separating cots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For most of the year, a favorite Ladera Street surf spot has been closed after part of the cliff gave way. After the cliff collapsed the City declared an emergency situation because lifeguards have raised concerns about having access to the beach. In a City Council meeting Monday, a decision was made to fast-track a project that will stabilize the cliff by scaling it back. Members of the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Advisory Board want to the City to find a different solution. "This is just a temporary fix but it's causing permanent damage to the whole cliffside," said Point Loma resident Aaron Taylor. Aside from urging the City to spend more time on the issue, there are some on the committee who think the access point should be moved to another location altogether."You go down the stairs now you're in the tidal zone you're in a danger zone," said Kim Haynes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California could reach .30 per gallon in the next several weeks, according to a GasBuddy. The company’s senior petroleum analyst, Patrick DeHaan, took to Twitter to announce that prices could soar to .15 to .30 per gallon in the next 10 to 14 days. According to DeHaan, the average price per gallon reached .85 in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon and is expected to “breach in the next few days.”DeHaan tweeted out earlier Wednesday that prices in Southern California could spike by anywhere between 25 and 40 cents per gallon in the coming days. The news comes amid problems at several California refineries and just weeks after attacks on oil fields in Saudi Arabia. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Honda has agreed to pay million to settle allegations surrounding airbag failures.The lawsuit was brought by a collation of Attorneys General in 48 states.According to the Attorney General of New York the settlement, "Concludes a multistate investigation into Honda's alleged failure to inform regulators and consumers of issues related to the significant risk of rupture in the frontal airbag systems installed in certain model cars, which could cause metal fragments to fly into the passenger compartments of many Honda and Acura vehicles."The California Attorney General’s Office says Honda also agreed to a number of injunctive terms to protect consumers, including requirements that it include design features that protect vehicle occupants in the event of an airbag rupture and a prohibition from engaging in false or misleading advertising related to the safety of its frontal airbags."For years, Honda failed to warn consumers and regulators of the potential dangers of its airbags. That type of business practice not only violates Californians' trust but endangers lives," said Attorney General Xavier Becerra. "Every time we get into our vehicle, safety is a priority.
