WASHINGTON, June 23 (Xinhua) -- China represents a huge opportunity for American businesses, and the relationship between the two countries should not be portrayed as a zero sum game, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said on Wednesday."There are so many opportunities for trade to benefit both China and the United States," Locke said at a Senate Finance Committee hearing."I have seen those benefits first hand over the last 20 years, as Commerce Secretary, as an attorney in private practice, and as the governor of Washington State, where I helped double exports to China during my tenure."According to Locke, thanks to strong Chinese demand growth and recovery in prices of agricultural products, now the U.S. exports to China are growing faster than overall U.S. exports."We should neither underestimate the importance of the China market nor the potential it holds for American exporters who tap into it."During the same hearing, Ron Kirk, the U.S. trade representative, also hailed the opportunities provided by the China's growing economy."Thanks to China's strong recovery from the global recession, we have seen double digit growth in a variety of export sectors, ranging from high-end manufactured goods and chemical products to agricultural goods like soybeans," said Kirk.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will offer greater financial support to education for ethnic minority groups in the next decade, says a national education plan released Thursday.The Outline of China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) says allocation of public educational resources shall favor minority-inhabited areas."Speeding up educational development for ethnic minority groups is of far-reaching importance for promoting socioeconomic development among the people and in the areas inhabited by them, and for enhancing unity between people of different ethnic backgrounds," the outline says.Efforts shall be made to promote coordinated development of all kinds of education at all levels in minority-inhabited areas, it says.Border counties and impoverished counties in ethnic autonomous areas shall be supported to meet government standards for the construction of school buildings for compulsory education, with special efforts devoted to building boarding schools, it says.Development in senior middle school education in the minority-inhabited areas shall be speeded up. Support shall also be granted to areas with poor education in a bid to renovate, expand or build senior middle schools, it adds.No effort shall be spared to expand vocational education in minority-inhabited areas, and more support shall be granted to secondary vocational education in these areas, according to the outline.And more support shall be granted to educational development for ethnic minorities with small populations, it says.Efforts shall also be made to advance bilingual teaching, open Chinese language classes in every school, and popularize the national common language and writing system.However, minority groups' right to be educated in their native languages shall also be respected and ensured, it says.Schools in minority-inhabited areas shall get more help from their counterparts in other parts of the country under a "pairing-assistance" program, it saysThe education for ethnic minority groups has seen marked progress in recent years, it says.

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Party School of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, or the Central Party School, opened its door to more than 60 correspondents from domestic and overseas media on Wednesday, one day ahead of the 89th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, on July 1.It was the first time the country's highest institution for the training of high- and middle-level Party officials invited a large group of media workers from home and abroad to tour the mystery-shrouded campus in northwestern Beijing.Forty-two correspondents, photo journalists and TV reporters from major overseas media organizations - including the Associated Press, the Agence France-Presse, the Guardian, CNN and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation - participated.During the two-hour tour Wednesday afternoon, the group attended a press conference, a class and interviewed some teachers and students during their visit to the school's main teaching building, gymnasium, canteen and dormitory building."The Central Party School and the whole Party system haven't interacted much with the outside world -- this is something we are trying to change," said Li Baosheng, the school's vice president.The Party, founded July 1, 1921, is the world's largest political party. It had 78 million members as of last year."The Party system should open up to the outside world because the Party exists to serve the people and the Party has nothing to hide," Li said at the press conference.Some correspondents from overseas media interviewed by Xinhua said they had known nothing about the school before the tour. Other correspondents from domestic media said it was their first time to visit the school.The school's history dates back to the School of Marxism and Communism set up in March 1933. Late chairman Mao Zedong served as president of the school. President Hu Jintao also served as the school's president and its current president is Vice President Xi Jinping.The school has trained 60,00 high- and middle-level officials over three decades. Its curriculum includes Marxism masterpieces and Party principles, western political theory, economics, contemporary law, religion and military affairs.The school has academic cooperation agreements with government departments, research institutes and universities from nearly 30 countries.The media group found the tour interesting, and some even took photographs of the food menu in the canteen. Some walked around the huge campus decorated with trees and fountains like many other college campuses in the world."It's a beautiful campus. The environment here is a great place for study," said Stephen McDonell, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's China correspondent.The tour of the school was welcomed by many correspondents. The school's spokesman, Luo Zongyi, made his debut at a press conference held Tuesday.Some correspondents from overseas media expressed their wish to know more about how the school plays its role as the highest institution."The tour was interesting and the school is probably less mysterious than people think. I hope we will have more opportunities of this kind to visit and see for ourselves and to have interactions with officials, teachers and students as we did today," Jaime A. Florcruz, CNN's Beijing Bureau Chief, said after the tour.Florcruz said that he wanted to interact with teachers and researchers at the school and know their views about international and domestic affairs because "whatever they are thinking and studying here is a reflection of what's going on in China."The school's vice president, Li Baosheng, pledged to organize more activities to help the media know more about the Party system."The Central Party School will not be a mysterious place in the future. PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets.The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. "The Greek shipowners will come to visit the Chinese naval fleet and express their gratitude to the help from the Chinese navy," he said.During the five-day visit, the Chinese naval officers and soldiers will visit a Greek navy base as well as the Acropolis and other archeological sites in Athens.China's fifth naval escort flotilla with more than 800 officers and soldiers has successfully escorted 588 Chinese and foreign vessels in 41 batches since it arrived in the pirate-infested waters in early March this year.
