BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan met Chairman of the Presidential Committee for the G20 Summit of the Republic of Korea (ROK) II SaKong Tuesday in Beijing. ISTANBUL, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's four-nation Eurasian tour has scored marked achievements and further deepened China-Europe cooperation, said Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, who described the visit as "a great complete success."Wen paid official visits to Greece, Belgium, Italy and Turkey and attended the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the 13th China-EU summit in the eight days from Oct. 2-9.Yang said Premier Wen's visit is aimed at boosting mutual trust through dialogues and promoting common development through cooperation.During his eight-day visit, Wen took part in more than 70 meetings, events and activities and paid a brief visit to Berlin as a guest of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the midst of his stay in Brussels.In addition to talking with leaders of the four countries and the European Union (EU), Wen also met with people from the local cultural, industrial and business circles and held joint press conferences or issued joint statements together with the leaders of the countries.Premier Wen vividly presented China's policies and positions, trying different angles, Yang said, which had further improved bilateral relations between China and the four countries and deepened China-Europe ties in the new historic period.

KUNMING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The building of a railway between southwest China's Yunnan Province and Laos will kick off on Oct. 28, according to its Chinese contractor.The 530-km railway, expected to be completed in 2015, will link Mohan port in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna and Vientiane, the capital of Laos, said Li Zhanqun, board chairman of the Yunnan Xiaoxiang Pan-Asia Investment Co., Ltd."We would like to use more workers from Laos to help boost the employment market along the railway," Li said.The railway is part of the Trans-Asian railway network, which will cover 114,000 km and travel through 28 countries throughout the region.In 2009, China ratified an agreement on the Trans-Asian Railway Network, which was initiated by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).The agreement came into effect in June 2009.

How about sitting down and having a cup of coffee in a cozy cafe some 150 meters underground in a real coal mine?This is not day dreaming on the part of China's miners who usually toil down in the mine for meager wages and sometimes have to risk their lives.A coal mine operator in Baise city, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has set up a cafe in the Donghuai Coal Mine as a part of the measures taken to improve underground working conditions, Xinhua reporters saw.Miners now can enjoy light music, crack a joke with loved ones through a walkie-talkie, or simply take a nap in the cafe. There are also sets of desks and chairs, potted plants and even a fish bowl."We have left no loop-holes in safety checks and try to do more," said Yi Peiyi, a deputy director of the local mining administration.He said the city plans to spend 80 million yuan (12 million U.S. dollars) to make mines modern and safe beginning in 2005.China's coal mines were notorious for accidents in the past few years as mines, including many with inadequate safety measures, were pushed to run at maximum capacity to meet the massive energy needs of a fast growing economy.More than 2,600 miners were killed in China's mining accidents last year. However, the death toll was already significantly less than those recorded in previous years.Last month, China's mine workers and bosses joined the world in cheering the successful rescue of 33 Chilean miners and were awed at the professional and modern working conditions of their Chilean counterparts.Additionally, industry authorities and safety watchdog officials have ordered mine bosses to double their efforts to improve safety measures and underground working conditions.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Access to debt finance, leading technology and lower cost gave Chinese mining and metals investors an advantage in the global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market, accounting giant Ernst & Young said Thursday."Competition for mining and metals assets around the world has steadily increased during 2010, with the sector's total deal value as of Sept. 30 growing 87 percent over the same period last year," said Ernst & Young global mining and metals leader Mike Elliott.The firm's statistics show the total value of the world's deals in mining and metals for the year to Sept. 30 reached 78.9 billion U.S. dollars, with the number of deals growing 10 percent year-on-year to 827.For China, the value of mining and metals deals at Sept. 30 has surged 53 percent to 8.9 billion U.S. dollars. Of the 102 transactions, 49 were outbound deals, 40 domestic and 13 inbound."China's outbound M&A investment continues to be driven by the country's need to secure reliable sources of raw materials to support its rapid economic growth and urbanization plans," Ernst & Young China mining and metals leader Peter Markey said."Debt finance in particular has a strong appeal to vendors, given the lack of bank finance available to miners. Bidders able to provide not just equity but also direct or indirect access to debt are very appealing," he said.Similarly, bringing innovative Chinese technology to the deal table, together with access to equipment and supplies which lower operating costs, had proved a winning formula for some successful Chinese acquirers this year, Markey said.
