New research confirms that temperature and symptom checks miss many coronavirus infections. A study published Wednesday found that these measures failed to detect infections in new Marine recruits before they started training, even after several weeks of quarantine. Many recruits had no symptoms yet still spread the virus. The work has implications for colleges, prisons, meatpacking plants and and other places that rely on symptom screening. Doctors say more COVID-19 testing is needed, especially in younger people who often don't develop symptoms.“We spent a lot of time putting measures like that in place and they’re probably not worth the time as we had hoped,” said Jodie Guest, a public health researcher at Atlanta’s Emory University who had no role in the research.“Routine testing seems to be better in this age group” because younger adults often have no symptoms, she said.The study was led by researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and the Naval Medical Research Center.It involved 1,848 Marine recruits, about 90% of them men, who were told to isolate themselves for two weeks at home, then in a supervised military quarantine at a closed college campus, The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, for two more weeks. That included having a single roommate, wearing masks, keeping at least 6 feet apart and doing most training outdoors. They also had daily fever and symptom checks.The recruits were tested for coronavirus when they arrived for the military quarantine and 7 and 14 days afterward. Sixteen, or about 1%, tested positive on arrival and only one had any symptoms. Another 35 -- an additional 2% -- tested positive during the two-week military quarantine and only four had symptoms.Only recruits who tested negative at the end of both quarantine periods were allowed to go on to Parris Island for basic training.Genetic testing revealed six separate clusters of cases among the recruits.A separate study published Wednesday in the New England journal reports on an outbreak last spring on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. Among the crew of 4,779, mostly young people, 1,271 became infected; 77% did not show symptoms when diagnosed and 55% never developed any.The case shows that “young, healthy persons can contribute to community spread of infection, often silently,” Dr. Nelson Michael of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research wrote in a commentary. 2442

Nestle and Starbucks are teaming up to create a "global coffee alliance."Under the deal, Nestle will pay .2 billion to market, sell and distribute Starbucks' packaged products around the world, the companies said Monday.Nestle already has a significant presence in the coffee business with well-known brands like Nescafe and Nespresso. It's now adding Starbucks coffee and tea products to the list.The agreement only covers Starbucks' packaged goods sold outside the US company's stores. NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — A man found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday is believed to be connected to a shooting at a federal judge's New Jersey home Sunday, killing her son and injuring her husband, law enforcement sources told PIX11 News.The man was found dead in a vehicle on Route 17 in Sullivan County, New York, wearing a FedEx shirt, sources said.Gov. Phil Murphy said he had no comment about the development when asked about it Monday at his daily press briefing.The discovery comes after a gunman opened fire at Judge Esther Salas' North Brunswick home Sunday, killing her 20-year-old son, Daniel, and wounding her husband, defense lawyer Mark Anderl, Chief District Judge Freda Wolfson told the Associated Press.Another law enforcement source, who wasn’t authorized to comment and spoke anonymously to the AP Sunday, said the gunman posed as a FedEx delivery driver.They said Salas wasn't injured as she was in the basement at the time of the shooting.The FBI said late Sunday it was looking for one suspect in connection with the shooting.Officials have not commented on any possible motive for the shooting.Judge Salas was set to preside over a class action lawsuit filed last Wednesday against Deutsche Bank. She had blood on her face, she was bleeding," said Jane Thursfield, owner of Cactus Jack. Thursfield said Ortega provoked the fight when he punched Marcinkowski in the face after he was let go by the restaurant. Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers could see no evidence of blood on Marcinkowski's face in the Facebook video. The owner said even if Marcinkowski was provoked, the racial comments were not OK. “No, no, of course not," Thursfield said. "No, we don’t condone that at all.”Other customers, like Johnny Samz, who said he regularly eats at Cactus Jack, agreed. “I don’t think it’s ever good, for anybody to use the N-word," said Samz. "I don’t care what the circumstances are.” WFTX's Jasmine Minor asked since Ortego no longer worked at the restaurant, if Marcinkowski would face the same fate. “She is still working here, yeah," said Thursfield.
