Protests have the power to change the political landscape and history is proof.An assistant professor who studied unrest in the 1960s says how things change is determined by the way protesters share their message.“When the tactics on the ground, which are essentially telling a story, tell a story that focuses our attention on rights, on injustice, then that's what the media emphasizes,” said Omar Wasow, assistant professor at Princeton University. “Civil rights, you know a redress of grievances, and those kinds of stories can powerfully move politics.”Wasow researched protests during the civil rights movement. He found during the early 60s, the wave of peaceful protests led to public opinion favoring their message and legislation getting passed. But later protesters became more violent and public opinion shifted again.“What we saw in the 1960s was that you can trigger a kind of backlash movement in which the taste for law and order, a kind of more police-centric narrative comes to the fore and that's going to make it harder for folks who are trying to push for reform,” said Wasow. Wasow says politicians were able to capitalize on that anxiety, like when Nixon won the 1968 election.While we don't know yet how much of an impact there may be this year, Wasow sees a lot of similarities between then and now.He thinks reforms are possible, if protesters keep attention on inequalities in the criminal justice system and state violence. 1463

Reverend Robert McWillams was arrested Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Strongsville, Ohio, for allegedly possessing child porn. "In a parish that you know and that you go to and people you trust,” parishioner Jennifer Herold said. According to the criminal complaint against McWilliams, he was in possession three separate times—the first instance in 2016, again in 2018 and then once more just this year. "In the catholic church you’ve heard these things go on in many different places all over the world and to think it's actually happening in your parish or in your area it's kind of shocking,” Herold said. Herold and her family go to St. Joseph. Her son is in the Parish School of Religion program. She said she asked him if he ever made contact with the accused Reverend. "I did ask him if he’d seen him before and he had not,” Herold said. "It does bring up conversations that you need to have with your kids about these kinds of dangers and what they should do, who they should talk to.” Herold said she wants action. "We need to be proactive and it just can’t be kind of swept under the rug,” Herold said. She also wants the church to talk about these things more. "I think it's hard for tradition, it’s hard for history to really kind of break the ceiling here and really come into the modern era and figure out okay, there’s a problem we need to deal with it,” Herold said. "He’ll still continue to go and we’ll still continue to follow our faith but I do think that doesn't mean that nothing needs to change.” According to the Cleveland Diocese, McWillams was a chaperone at at least one overnight trip at Camp Christopher. Six months after a catastrophic limo crash killed 20 people in upstate New York, a son of the limo company's owner faces a litany of charges.Nauman Hussain has been indicted on 20 counts of second-degree manslaughter and 20 counts negligent homicide, Schoharie District Attorney Susan Mallery said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.Police have described Hussain as an "operator" for Prestige Limousine Chauffer Service, which was owned by his father Shahed Hussain.A felony complaint said the younger Hussain hired driver Scott Lisinicchia, despite knowing Lisinicchia didn't have the appropriate license to drive the limo.The complaint also said Nauman Hussain knew or should have known the modified Ford Excursion had mechanical and safety deficiencies, including some that would have affected the brakes.The limo had failed inspection just a month before the October 2018 crash and "was not supposed to be on the road," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.But Hussain's attorney Lee Kindlon said "Mr. Hussain is not guilty of criminal wrongdoing, and we will fight for him every step of the way."
