With a mask covering his face and his fingers playing a disinfected piano, musician Purnell Steen and his band, Le Jazz Machine, are back to doing what they love: playing music in front of a live audience, but now from a regulated distance.“It is a new learning experience for all us,” Steen said. After being shut down for months due to coronavirus concerns, Steen is back on his home stage at Dazzle in downtown Denver, one of the top 100 jazz bars in the world.“For the entire month of June, we did as much as much revenue as we used to do on a good Saturday,” said Matt Ruff, Dazzle general manager.Ruff says new safety guidelines that allow live music venues like his to operate are impacting his bottom line.“Capacity went from 50 to 100 people,” he said. “But it’s still 6-foot distancing between tables and the closest table to the stage has to be 25 feet away from the stage.”Though he’s thankful to reopen, Ruff is also questioning some of those safety measures, like no longer allowing wind instruments to be played on stage.“I think that’s based on faulty information,” he said. "People think that horns project something, but the science is just not there.”Some scientists, however, believe those brass instruments could hit a sour note when it comes to health.“You’re blowing from the lungs, so they are respiratory droplets and that’s the primary means by which this virus is transmitted,” said Sheryl Zajdowicz, Ph.D., a biology professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. This infectious disease specialist says while live music could be good for the soul, social distancing could be even better for one’s health.“When you’re at a music venue, you’re kind of up against each other,” she said. “It’s going to be very challenging to limit that from happening.”That’s where Live Nation comes in.This entertainment group is now promoting “Live from the Drive-In,” a new live music experience where people can watch and listen to top artists from their own individual tailgate zones at outdoor concerts across the country.Back at Dazzle, fans say live music is what they need during this pandemic. And while the new normal on stage could be confining for artists, they believe live music will help calm emotions as the virus moves towards a crescendo.“If we can bring a few moments of joy to somebody than we have performed our mission,” Steen said. 2376

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging Americans not to travel this holiday season, it's clear that many will choose to do so anyway.Between Nov. 25 and Nov. 29 — the height of the Thanksgiving travel surge —the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) said it screened about 4.5 million travelers. While that represented 39% less travelers than last year, it represented the most travelers the agency had screened since the start of the pandemic. With another surge in travel expected for Christmas and New Year's, the TSA has offered some helpful tips when it comes to packing luggage for the holiday season.Packing giftsDo not pre-wrap gifts: Gifts need to be screened like any other piece of luggage, meaning gifts need to be unwrapped if they need to be inspected. The TSA suggests wrapping once you reach your destination, or wrapping in a gift bag.Be sure to pack gifts that contain large amounts liquid, like perfumes, gel candles or snow globes, in a checked bag. TSA allows containers with 3.4 ounces of liquid or less for carry-ons.Snowboards, snowshoes and ice skates can be carried on, but be sure to check with airlines about a plane's overhead bin space. Skis and ski poles will need to be checked.Packing foodHomemade baked goods and other treats can be carried on, but any sort of jams, jellies or syrups are liquids and should be checked if they're in a container larger than 3.4 ounces. A rule of thumb? "If you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, then it should be packed in a checked bag if the container is larger than 3.4 ounces."Higher-proof alcoholic beverages (between 24% and 70% alcohol by volume) are limited in check bags to five liters a passenger. Any beverage with less than 24% alcohol by volume has no size limit in a checked bag.Mini bottles of alcohol can be carried on, as long as they are less than 3.4 ounces and fit "comfortably" in a single quart-sized bag.Packing electronics Electronics to be given as a gift can be carried on, but remember to place electronics larger than a laptop in their own bin with nothing above or below it.TSA allows drones past checkpoints, but double-check with airlines on their policies about transporting drones.Remember, loose lithium batteries are prohibited in checked bags. While much-needed rain falling in parts of Northern California could help firefighters battling the deadly Camp Fire, it could also prompt powerful mudslides and debris flow, adding to the devastation for communities that have already been ravaged by the flames.Authorities fear the showers -- even as they clear the choking smoke and help extinguish flames -- will trigger mudslides and floods in areas scarred by the Camp Fire, complicating the search for victims' remains. Rain could also pile on misery for people forced from their homes, some of whom are living in tent camps outside. Two weeks after the devastating fire started, 563 people are unaccounted for, Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said. Of the 83 killed in the Camp Fire, at least 58 of them have been tentatively identified as rescue crews sift through debris, searching for more remains. The rain could make the process of scouring through the ash and debris more complicated, and lead to treacherous conditions for firefighters, officials said.It has been raining on and off for the past several hours in the town of Paradise, which was wiped out by the fire. A flash flood watch remains in effect through Friday morning, CNN meteorologist Gene Norman said. 1247

We've all been here before, trying to back out of a crowded parking lot having a near miss or even worse, a crash. But avoiding these types of accidents is getting easier thanks to new technology. It could save lives, and money.Back in the day you'd have to turn around look out of the window and hope you didn't hit anything. But now cameras are pretty standard in most new cars. They will be mandatory in all new cars starting this spring. And it's more than just a nice thing to have, it's just one of several technologies that are really reducing crashes. The rear view camera gives you a look at things you sometimes can't see with your own eyes. It eliminates those blind spots. Then there are parking sensors. Those are those sometimes annoying beeps or vibrations in your seat that let you know when your car is getting too close to something behind it.     But what researchers found to be most helpful in preventing rear crashes is the rear automatic emergency braking system. It can detect if something is behind you while you're backing up and can automatically brake if you can't or wont stop.Together, this technology dream team is reducing back up crashes reported to police by 78 percent, according to a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Most rear crashes don't result in serious injuries, but you never know who or what might be behind you. Using this technology could save you a lot of stress and potentially thousands in repair costs. 1503
