(KGTV) -- The City of Chula Vista is teaming up with local high schools to help beautify one of its most important corridors.Students from High Tech High began painting a mural Tuesday on a business near Broadway and E Street, the first of five new student-painted murals planned along the Broadway corridor this year.Broadway is the highest revenue-producing corridor in the city, said Chula Vista councilmember Jill Galvez, but a 2019 survey by the Institute for Public Strategies highlighted community concerns with graffiti and vandalism. In the survey of 160 businesses along Broadway, more than 70 percent said graffiti and vandalism were a top concern.Galvez challenged high schools to paint city utility boxes last year and says it’s been successful at deterring graffiti.“Artists respect other artists’ work,” she said.“We’ve already seen the delight of people driving by to see beautiful artwork. It brightens your day. This is going to be the first of many projects along Broadway,” she added.In addition to High Tech High, she said Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School and MAAC Community Charter School are working on murals.Two classes of seniors led by art teacher Chelsea Smith. She said students came up with designs then voted on their favorites as a class. Local businesses then voted on the finalists.High Tech High students are covering two sides of Wild Woolly's Saloon, a frequent target for taggers. One side will depict a floral scene, the other will feature beach imagery and a classic car."I think it's great. I hope it puts a stop to the graffiti," said Autumn Hammer, the bar's manager. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A fire at an apartment in downtown Chula Vista sent two children to a hospital early Saturday, authorities said.Firefighters responded at about 2:20 a.m. to a report of a fire at an apartment above a business in the 300 block of Third Avenue, Chula Vista Deputy Fire Chief Harry Muns said.Two people were reportedly walking by the home when they saw smoke and flames and rushed to wake everyone.Smoke was visible from the back of the building upon arrival, Muns said. Crews were able to put the fire out quickly, and they found a 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy inside the unit where the fire began.The two were given medical treatment for smoke-related injuries.Five people were displaced by the fire -- including three from adjacent units, Muns said. 796

Parents tell 10News they received an email just after 8:30 a.m. letting them know of the changes. The students were told once they got to school. One Eastlake High School mom told 10News her child's AP calculus class was consolidated, forcing her son to move to a different teacher and a larger class.The email to parents reads as follows: 540

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Doctors believe exposure to the drug fentanyl caused an illness to an inmate and 27 staffers at an Ohio prison Wednesday.Officers, nurses and one inmate at the Ross Correctional Institution fell ill after exposure to “an unknown substance” Wednesday morning. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said troopers arrived on scene at about 9:10 a.m. A total of 28 people, including 23 correction officers, four nurses and an inmate were treated on scene and then driven to a hospital for evaluation. One inmate was treated at the scene and not taken to a hospital. Adena Regional Medical Center officials said 24 patients arrived there at about 9:30 a.m.Dr. Kirk Tucker, the chief clinical officer at Adena Regional Medical Center, said that the sickest patient, an inmate, arrived at the hospital unconscious and not breathing. The others had symptoms including nausea and vomiting, lightheadedness, numbness in hands and feet and heaviness in arms and legs.Fentanyl is "our best clinical guess" for what caused the symptoms, Tucker said. The drug is an opioid 50-100 times more potent than heroin.Caregivers administered five doses of Narcan, Tucker said. But health officials delivered hundreds of doses in case they were needed.Most of the patients were monitored for symptoms for a few hours and then released, according to Tucker. He said one patient has been admitted to the hospital for the night.Tucker called the large exposure "a once-in-a-lifetime event." He estimated the hospital had more than 100 staffers available to help, thanks to their regular ER personnel and emergency staffers brought in from other parts of the hospital.The fast response at the prison and emergency preparations at the hospital "probably saved a life or two," according to Tucker."This could have been a lot worse," he said.About 31 inmates who were not affected were removed from the cellblock and moved to other secure areas in the prison, troopers said. A hazardous material unit was cleaning affected areas of the prison, troopers said. CINCINNATI – Charles Adams went on a rampage before he died in police custody Wednesday, acting wildly and damaging residents’ property at a Westwood apartment complex, according to a resident and 911 callers."It was bizarre, so bizarre," India Lavender told Scripps station WCPO in Cincinnati.Lavender said the 36-year-old Adams jumped on her car and then jumped into her neighbor’s window."(Somebody) came and knocked on my door and told me there was a man standing on top of my car," Lavender said.  “I came out. He yelled at me and told me to call the police, somebody was chasing him,  and he literally jumped off my car into my neighbor's window."Adams damaged at least five others cars while calling out for help as he went along, residents said.“It definitely seemed as if he was hallucinating,” Lavender said. “In his mind, someone really was chasing him, 'cause he was trying to get everyone else in the building to see the other people that weren’t there."Body camera video of Adams' arrest shows him becoming increasingly lethargic and unresponsive after officers put him in handcuffs. At one point, while standing, he slumps forward until he is nearly bent double.When officers escort him outside and allow him to sit down against a railing, he begins to drool and twitch before losing consciousness. "Jeez," one officer says in the recording. "He's foaming at the mouth."His breathing stopped shortly after his eyes closed.The fire department gave Adams first aid, including CPR, but he died on the scene.It’s unclear what brought Adams to the apartment complex. Neighbors said they had never seen him."Officers did not use any type of force to subdue Mr. Adams during the arrest activity," Lt. Stephen Saunders, Cincinnati police public information officer, said in the statement. The body camera footage reflects this assertion.READ the police statement here or below.Police documents released Thursday said District 3 officers responded to 911 calls about a man “exhibiting bizarre behaviors.”Adams responded to officer's verbal commands and he was placed in custody after they encountered him outside the Western Glen Apartments at 2627 Montana Ave., about 7:36 p.m., according to the police statement.Officers observed a small amount of blood from lacerations on Adams’ hands that occurred prior to their contact and immediately requested assistance from the fire department for medical aid, Saunders said.This remains an active investigation and more details will be release when available, Saunders said.  2589
