(KGTV) - As the dual-threat of wildfires and climate change grows, one company says an old method of home building could be the answer to both problems.Rebecca Tasker is the CEO of Simple Construct. Her company builds homes out of straw bales.And, yes, she's heard all of the jokes."I've heard every single 'Three Little Pigs' joke you can think of," Tasker says. "Some good ones, some not so good ones."But the idea of straw bale homes is serious to Tasker."These homes, once they're plastered, are more fire-resistant than conventional homes," she says.The secret is in the construction. Tasker uses high-grade straw bales that are packed solid. She says that makes them like phone books, so they smolder instead of igniting in flames. Also, the plaster her company uses to cover the walls is made from dirt, clay, and more straw. The mixture gives the homes a 1-2 hour fire-resistance rating. Most homes only get a 30-minute rating."The oxygen can't get in to burn," Tasker says.In addition to the fire resistance, Tasker says the homes are environmentally friendly. The thick bales provide a two-foot layer of natural insulation. That blocks sound to 50 decibels. It also keeps the warmth in during the winter and the heat out during the summer."We're actually sequestering carbon in the walls," she says of the process. "We're helping to reverse climate change with these buildings. And as people start to put those two things together, we're getting a lot of business."Tasker says straw homes have been around for more than 100 years and came to California in 1996. Now, she estimates more than 60 are in use in San Diego County.She says the size of the bales can be a drawback, as it takes up valuable square footage on smaller lots. She also doesn't recommend building any higher than two stories.As for bugs or rodents, Tasker says they can't get into the walls because of how densely packed the bales are.Even the interior walls, which are typically made from traditional wood and studs, are packed with the straw/clay mixture.The construction price is comparable to conventional homes with similar insulation and efficiency ratings. Tasker thinks the idea will catch on as more people become more aware of the way these homes can help the planet.As for the little pigs jokes, she wrote a book called "The Story of the Fourth Little Pig." The findings were for known coronavirus cases through September 3.Children comprise nearly 9.8% of all COVID-19 cases, the report found.The report found that as of September 3, 4,321 children have been hospitalized by the virus, comprising 1.7% of all coronavirus-related hospitalizations. Hospital data only covered 23 states and NYC.Children made up .07% of coronavirus deaths, with 103 children reportedly dying from COVID-19 related illnesses. Mortality data was unavailable for seven states.So far in 2020, there have been 190,000 coronavirus-related deaths, and public health experts expect the number of fatalities to increase through the rest of the year.While the coronavirus has proven to be much more deadly for adults, especially seniors, it appears to be less deadly for children compared to influenza. According to CDC data, an estimated 477 children died from the flu in 2018-19, a season when flu-related illnesses killed an estimated 34,157 across the US.There were some inconsistencies in the coronavirus data, the report acknowledged, including how states define children. Also some states did not have hospital or mortality data.While children have largely been spared the worst effects of the coronavirus, there are still questions on how easily children can spread the virus to others. Update, Friday 3:15 p.m.: Assemblyman Berman's office said the bill passed the Higher Education Committee and now goes to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A recent study of California's community colleges found that 1 in 5 students had been homeless in the past year.To help these students, San Diego's community college district offers showers, priority class registration, food pantries, and help finding homeless services on and off campus.But a new State Assembly bill aims to aid homeless students further by requiring schools to let them sleep in their vehicles overnight in campus parking lots and structures.Assembly Bill 302, introduced earlier this year by Assemblyman Marc Berman (D-Palo Alto), specifies "that if a community college campus has parking facilities on campus, the governing board of the community college district (CCD) shall grant overnight access to those facilities to any homeless student for the purpose of parking the student’s vehicle overnight, provided the student: a) Is enrolled in coursework; b) Has paid enrollment fees, if not waived; and, c) Is in good standing with the CCD without requiring the student to enroll in additional courses."While the long-term solution is to create more affordable housing opportunities for students and families, the bill hopes to help a student’s ability to remain in school and be successful. “With the passage of AB 302, homeless students at community college campuses will be able to park overnight in a safe area. Providing this resource will enable our students to get some rest without having to constantly fear for their safety.”The proposal isn't without some opposition, getting mixed reviews from at least one school district.The Los Rios Community College District is calling the bill a “one size fits all” mandate that may not work for all of the state's campuses. Costs to implement the program are projected to be significant as it will require schools to increase overnight security staffing, custodial and utility costs, and the potential of threat of lawsuits for persons injured on campus parking lots during the evening hours.“Mandate cost claims are never fully reimbursed: Mandates are reimbursed only after costs are incurred and often times do not reflect the actual costs incurred in these activities," said officials with The Los Rios Community College District in Sacramento.Some students at San Diego Community College said the bill may exacerbate limited parking availability on campuses where parking is already difficult to find. "If it was during the day, or something like that, then it would be inconvenient for people trying to find parking or take the courses here," said Daniel Silva, a San Diego Community College student. "But overnight, it seems pretty harmless."San Diego Community College District officials are supportive of the idea, but would like to see some changes to the specifics. UPDATE (July 27, 1 p.m.): The owner of missing 40-year-old tortoise Lou said her beloved pet was found safe and is back home.Jessica Comfort told ABC 10News that someone brought Lou to her front yard on Monday, but that person left before she could talk to them.Comfort said her tortoise did not have any visible injuries and is doing well.Comfort is working to schedule Lou a visit to the vet as soon as possible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman in Santee desperately looking for her nearly 40-year-old tortoise says she's been able to rescue other reptiles during the search.The Texas and California tortoise mix, named Lou, weighs about 20 pounds and is slightly bigger than the size of a dinner plate. Jessica Comfort says he's been missing for two weeks."The night before he went missing, we had a water main break," says Comfort. "With the water shooting up over the roof, we had to get an emergency plumber and back some foliage, and we left the gate open, unfortunately."Comfort says she's been searching for the animal ever since. Signs have been posted around her Santee neighborhood and surrounding areas."The search has been wild and crazy," Comfort said.Lou hasn't shown up yet, but Comfort says she was able to rescue three other animals during her search. The animals included a small turtle, a Reed Foot tortoise that needed medical attention, and a Sulcata Tortoise named Rocky. Rocky will be reunited with his family very soon.Comfort has been working with the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society to ensure all of the found animals are safe.
