SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A war veteran who used to deliver meals to seniors in the North County is now receiving them himself.City councilman Mark Kersey honored Jim Munday on Wednesday morning for his contributions. This week, the long-time Rancho Bernardo resident will celebrate a birthday most of us can only hope to reach—102 years old.Councilman Kersey brought him a blanket, flowers, some food, and a special certificate in honor of his birthday and thanking him for all of his contributions to the Meals on Wheels of San Diego County, but it's even more meaningful because Jim was once a Meals on Wheels volunteer himself.“He started delivering when he was 90 and now he's 102, so he's a pretty special guy,” Kersey said. At 102, Munday is quiet, modest, and hard of hearing but still very much aware of the world around him.“A good day for a birthday party,” he said as he sat outside. The World War II vet fought in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving several medals including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.His own artwork lines his living room. He started painting when was 90 and says he learned from watching Bob Ross on PBS.In 2003, Munday’s wife, Mildred, passed away, but their great-grandson, Hudson, and daughter Millie, were both on hand for this major milestone.“He's a very honest, generous person, and I'm very proud of him,” Millie said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A virtual job fair for Camp Pendleton Marines, their spouses, veterans, and members of the reserve and guard is set for Thursday.Organizer RecruitMilitary says more than 35 employers will attend, and more than 400 job seekers have already signed up. The jobs run the gamut from full to part-time, telecommuting, and include local and national employers. The City of Carlsbad and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department will be there recruiting. Other employers include Northrop Grumman, ADT, Spectrum and Eli Lilly. "We have employers that have made the transition themselves," said Jennifer Hadac, a Navy veteran organizing the fair for RecruitMilitary. "A lot of them are veterans themselves or military spouses or members of the military community, so they understand the challenges that they face, they speak the lingo, so it kind of bridges the gap for them."The nationwide Veteran unemployment rate is now at a seasonally adjusted 8 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- All 289 playgrounds in the city of San Diego will reopen to the public on Saturday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Friday.Earlier this week, California health officials issued guidelines that allowed for the safe reopening of outdoor playgrounds in parks, campgrounds and other publicly accessible locations.The county reopened 100 of its playgrounds on Wednesday; the city of Carlsbad reopened its parks on Friday.In a statement, Faulconer said, “We already encourage families and children to recreate outdoors at beaches and parks while taking safety precautions, so there’s no reason why we can’t reopen playgrounds the same safe and responsible way. Along with other local leaders, we urged the Governor to deliver the proper guidance to make this a reality for our parents and children, and now that we can reopen we’ll do it responsibly with safety front and center.”Under the state’s guidelines, playground visitors must abide by these requirements:1. Face masks over the mouth and nose are required for everyone 2 years of age or older with caregiver supervision at all times to ensure face mask use.2. Do not use the playground when different households are unable to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet or when the capacity limit has been reached.3. Caregivers must monitor to keep adults and children from different households at least 6 feet apart.4. Consider coming on different times or days to avoid wait times and potential crowded times.5.
