WASHINGTON, D.C. – Could foreign parts in voting machines be putting the U.S. election at risk for hacking? It’s a question that lawmakers have been exploring as they seek answers from top bosses at three major voting manufacturers. In the wake of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, congress is pumping nearly a billion dollars into making voting machines safer.“We're definitely in a much better position today than we were at the end of 2016,” said Liz Howard, an attorney with the nonprofit, nonpartisan Brenan Center for Justice in Washington. She also testified at last week’s hearing. “So, no machine is 100 percent secure. Election officials’ goal is to make the most resilient election system that they possibly can,” said Howard. Some are calling for regular election audits, more resources for state voting officials and the phasing out of all paperless voting machines. The Brennan Center estimates only about half of the states that used paperless voting machines in 2016 will continue to use them in 2020. Those eight states include Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Some assert that requiring a paper ballot is the only way to have a reliable back-up of each vote. “We absolutely need to have a paper record of every vote cast. Right. Shooters in three different mass killings this year have posted manifestos on a little-known website where extremists gather to cheer on and recruit others. The 8Chan website has been down and then back online repeatedly since the mass killings in El Paso Saturday. A growing number of people studying mass shootings say homegrown extremists are organizing and recruiting like the way well-known terror groups such as ISIS or Al Qaeda have done, and they are using the 8Chan website to do it. Robert Evans doesn’t give off the look of someone who has studied extremists academically. The day he met us, he was dressed like a world traveler, wearing a TV, vest, jeans and boots. “I study how terrorist groups use the Internet to radicalize and recruit," Evans told investigative reporter Jace Larson during an interview Monday in Mexico City. Ten days ago, Evans was in Syria. He traveled to study extremist groups in Mosel, Iraq in 2016 and 2017. Since a shooter went on a rampage in March, killing 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, Evans has devoted much of his time to studying how three mass-shootings were connected to the 8Chan website. “8Chan went from a bunch of disaffected, misogynist videogame fans to outright neo-Nazis,” Evans said. The site started after users were booted from a similar, but slightly more regulated website called 4Chan, an image-based online bulletin board where users post and discuss images. 8Chan was developed as a place where any speech is allowed. Evans showed how users freely post violence, anti-Semitic themes and race-related extreme views. Pro-white nationalism images are easily found. Robert was among the first to find a connection between 8Chan and three 2019 mass killings: the Christchurch massacre in March, the Poway synagogue shooting outside San Diego in April that injured three and killed one, and the shooting in El Paso that killed 22 Saturday. The killers appeared to have left manifestos in each case on the 8Chan website before the killings. Killing on 8Chan is sometimes likened to a video game. The phrase “beating his high score” is used to refer to anyone who can kill more than a previous killer. As evidence of this phenomenon, Evans points out that the Christchurch killer livestreamed his bloodbath with a first-person point of view from a helmet cam. “There's a reason that the Christchurch shooter livestreamed his massacre for the people at 8Chan, and there's a reason that he put together a music list that was full of songs that were like related to in jokes within that community,” Evan said. On the site, readers also talk about something called “replacement theory,” which is also referred to as “white replacement theory.” Some express a concern that the white race could be eliminated as more people immigrate from Mexico, other central American counties and elsewhere. “It's this idea that white people are going extinct because of immigration,” Evans said. He pointed out that he believes the theory is false. USERS LOOK TO TWEETS FOR VALIDATION The views of many on the site would have been considered in the past, even by users, as extreme and not shared by the public. Evans now says he’s seen evidence website users feel legitimized by recent tweets from politicians. The coveted crash test ratings for vehicles are in desperate need of an update, according to multiple auto safety groups. The system hasn't been updated since 2010. Right now, 98% of all vehicles get four or five stars. “It’s the equivalent of Halloween — everyone gets candy,” says Jason Levine with the Center for Auto Safety. “The idea is supposed to be separating between things that are safe and things that are really safe.” Levine says the tests are too easy to pass and they don't help consumers understand the difference between cars.Some recommendations include updating the ratings by testing new technology that helps drivers avoid crashes, like emergency automatic braking, and accounting for how passengers in the rear seats are impacted Experts also recommend testing systems that help avoid hitting pedestrians. This type of testing already exists, it just hasn't been mandated in the U.S. “NHSTA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has dragged its feet on renewing these ratings for almost a decade now,” Levine says. “They said they were going to update them in 2015. They didn't. They said they were going to update them in 2018 and they didn't. A 23-year-old Oregon woman was arraigned on Monday and is facing criminal charges after being accused of ripping off a student's hijab and intentionally desecrating the hijab. Multnomah County (Oregon) District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that Jasmine Renee Campbell, pictured above, would face charges on two counts of bias crime in the second degree, one count of attempted strangulation, one count of harassment and one count of criminal mischief in the third degree. According to Underhill's office, Campbell allegedly approached a 24-year-old Portland State college student from behind and grabbed her hijab. Underhill said the unnamed victim was able to push Campbell away, which is when Campbell then allegedly forcibly took the hijab from the victim. Campbell was then accused of using the hijab to rub it on and across multiple exposed sexually intimate parts of her body, Underhill said, citing court documents.The student, who Underhill's office stated was from Saudi Arabia, said that she no longer feels safe wearing a hijab in public and is relying on alternative methods to cover herself, Underhill said, citing court documents. 1160

A Kingman animal hospital helped deliver 19 Great Dane puppies from one mother on Saturday morning. Kingman Animal Hospital says all of the puppies were delivered successfully, and are alive and healthy. The mother dog was also doing well after the C-section. Eleven staff members at the animal hospital helped perform the surgery and checked the puppies afterward for any issues. “Thank you all for the kind words and congrats to the momma dog and our hard working staff that came in for this emergency,” their Facebook post read. 544
