They just pulled her off the plane," Thurswell said.Thurswell said the teenager attempted to reach her mother by phone, but was unable to do so because of the airline's mandatory "airplane mode" policy on cell phones. Giordano's phone was not receiving messages. The girl was put on another flight back to Detroit hours later. Giordano didn't realize her daughter was gone until mid-flight.“You don’t just separate a child from their mother," Thurswell said.“The safety and security of our Guests is our top priority,” Spirit Airlines said in a statement.Thurswell said the airline refunded Giordano a ticket and offered her extra flight miles.The family is suing for more than ,000 in damages. 1369

CLEVELAND — A Florida cat who has been missing for eight years was found in Ohio. Barley was found by her family 10 years ago as a six-week-old kitten in a dumpster in Tampa Bay, according to a Facebook post by Angels for Animals, the Canfield, Ohio, animal shelter that identified the cat.Two years after her family found her, they moved to another home. During the move, Barley and her cat big brother Spike got outside and were never seen again. Barley traveled 1,100 miles to Canfield over eight years. She was brought in to Angels for Animals as a stray cat last week, and the staff discovered she was micro-chipped. On Wednesday, the shelter was able to get in touch with her owners in Florida. The shelter is now working with the family to figure out how to get Barley back to Florida. 805

Childcare facilities are struggling with how they will continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic.“Providing care right now is expensive. We necessarily need sanitizing equipment, supportive PPE equipment. We need to ensure that ratios are high and group size is low, and that the physical space and the distances that are needed as well as the equipment and resources are available,” said Lynette Fraga, Executive Director of Child Care Aware of America. Child Care Aware of America says it's possible that anywhere from 30 to 50% of facilities nationwide could close permanently, depending on how long the pandemic goes on. That's with the increasing cost of much needed added health and safety measures. Also, some places are getting less money because they're keeping classrooms smaller now.“That means those providers that are open those prices may really be affected for parents, so any way you may look at this equation, the price of care is a real concern for parents and the price for providers to provide that care is a real concern,” said Fraga. Thieves plant skimming devices at gas stations and ATMs to steal your card info, but according to Delray Beach Police Detective Kimberly Mead, that is only half the battle scammers face.Next, they need to find a card with a magnetic stripe to hold the information."Anything that has a magnetic stripe on the back can be turned into a credit card,” Mead told WPTV. “Hotel keys, gift cards, gas station cards, anything that has a magnetic stripe."This includes lost, stolen and seemingly useless cards thrown away in the trash.“They are just going to be a piece of plastic to someone, but if [scammers] have a credit card number, which they obtained through the internet or from a skimming device, they can input that information onto the magnetic stripe [using a card reader],” Mead said. “Now that card is useful to them again.”Recently, Mead busted a Florida man for reprogramming credit cards with stolen information. “We see this quite frequently,” Mead said.In her most recent case, Mead says she was tipped off when the credit card number on the receipt didn't match the numbers written on the front of the card.Then, using the same type of card reader thieves use to re-encode magnetic stripes, Mead checked the internal data on the man’s credit cards. “When we swiped the magnetic stripe, the number that showed up on the screen did not match the number that was embossed on the front [of the cards],” she said.So what can you do? “This kind of activity goes hand-in-hand with skimming,” the Florida detective said. “Pay attention to the ATMs you’re using, the gas pumps you’re using.”Actively monitor your charges through online and mobile banking apps, and think twice before tossing any card with a magnetic stripe.“Cut it up or shred it,” Mead said. “Don’t just toss it in the trash.”Anyone can purchase a credit card reader.
