The American Red Cross is now checking all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies, instead of just searching for recovered patients. The organization is calling it a “game changer.”“We can then not only inform that donor of the testing results that we've identified COVID-19 antibodies in their blood, but also use that product as convalescent plasma to help patients who are ill with COVID-19 in the hospital,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Chief Medical Officer at the American Red Cross.Early results from the National Institutes for Health show the plasma can make a big difference for severely sick COVID-19 patients. And data from these new tests will help those researchers working to better understand the virus. The Red Cross says the need for whole blood donors is constant, but plasma is more unpredictable.Over the summer, plasma supplies ran low after unprecedented infections and demand in some states. Now, they're asking more donors to step up to restock for another potential surge in the fall and winter.“Because we can’t predict the demand, we want to ensure that we have enough inventory, because what really saves lives are the units that are on the shelf, not something that we need to collect once we realize there’s a need,” said Young. The Red Cross has taken additional safety steps during the pandemic. That includes making an appointment. You can sign up online at RedCrossBlood.org or by using the blood donor app. 1444

Starbucks is the latest food chain to add plant-based meat options to its U.S. menus. The Seattle coffee chain said Tuesday they now offer a breakfast sandwich made with imitation sausage from Impossible Foods at a majority of its U.S. locations. The sandwich comes with egg and cheese on a ciabatta bun.Starbucks said earlier this year that it would add plant-based meat to its menus worldwide as part of an effort to reduce its environmental impact. The company has sold milk alternatives, such as soy milk and oat milk, in the U.S. and elsewhere. But the sausage is its first plant-based food item in the U.S. 619
The biggest test of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election begins Tuesday with the trial of Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort. The trial on Manafort's financial dealings will hang over the White House and show just how deeply federal authorities have looked into the private business of Trump associates. It comes as the President continues to rail against Mueller's investigation, calling it a "witch hunt," and some congressional Republicans are looking to impeach the Justice Department official overseeing the Muller probe, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. One year ago to the month, federal agents barged into Manafort's Alexandria, Virginia, apartment under a search warrant. They took dozens of hanging file folders, bank statements, discs, memory cards and computer hard drives, and a watch worth several thousand dollars from the design house Bijan -- much of that evidence will be on display for the jury. 1016
The Boston Athletic Association announced Wednesday that next year's Boston Marathon would be postponed "until at least the fall of 2021.”The race, which typically occurs on the third Monday in April, won’t happen because of the coronavirus pandemic.“With fewer than six months until Patriots’ Day and with road races prohibited until Phase 4 of the Massachusetts reopening plan, we are unable to host the Boston Marathon this coming April,” said Tom Grilk, C.E.O. of the B.A.A said in a press release. “By shifting our focus to a fall date, we can continue to work with stakeholders to adjust the in-person experience for runners and supporters alike. Prioritizing the safety of participants, volunteers, spectators, and community members, we continue to assess all elements of the race, including a potential reduced field size or a weekend date.”Organizers said they are working with government officials and COVID-19 Medical & Event Operations Advisory Group members to see when the 125th Boston Marathon can happen. The B.A.A. said they would announce a new date by the end of the year. This year’s marathon was held virtually back in September. 1160
