LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - Two women on vacation in San Diego had their trip ruined when thieves stole all of their luggage.Vivia Bradshaw and Yvonne Simpson live in Florida and New York. For the last 15 years, they've made regular trips to San Diego."We’re always coming back, it is so beautiful, we love the weather especially," says Simpson. "Everything's so beautiful. We've never had a terrible experience coming here before."But their trip this past week turn a turn for the worse on Saturday, while they were visiting with a friend in La Mesa.Simpson and Bradshaw say they had put their luggage in their friend's car at the Woodland Terrace Apartments while they visited his home."When we were ready to leave, I came back to the car and saw something a little strange," says Simpson. "I asked him, was that open? And he saw right away that someone had entered the car. I said check the trunk. He did, all our suitcases were gone. Every last piece. Three of them!"Thieves took all of their clothes, money, gift cards, jewelry, shoes, purses and personal items."Everything's gone," says Simpson. "We know they're replaceable, but it's the sentiment."The two women have been able to buy new clothes and necessities. Now they're trying to make the most out of their week-long trip. They've filed a police report as well. La Mesa Police says they hope surveillance footage can help identify a suspect.Meanwhile, Bradshaw and Simpson have a warning for others."Just be careful," says Bradshaw. LA MESA (CNS) - One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa and lanes of the freeway were blocked this morning until further notice.The crash occurred near state Route 125 at 9:55 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.A witness told officers one vehicle was being driven recklessly just before hitting the center divider wall.The crash blocked three westbound lanes of the freeway and a SigAlert was issued at 10:30 p.m., the CHP said.The age, gender, and name of the victim was not disclosed. 557

LAKE PARK, Fla. -- The owners of a bait and tackle store in Florida have been accused of holding two people they suspected of shoplifting at gunpointDaniel Friedman, Eric Friedman and Daniel Friedman, the owners of Just Fishing Tackle and Consignment in Lake Park are charged with robbery with a firearm, false imprisonment, and tampering with evidence.On Aug.16, deputies with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says it responded to the Just Fishing in reference to a shoplifting complaint.When deputies arrived, one person was laying on the ground surrendering to law enforcement, and one of the business owners was holding a shotgun over another person in the rear of the store.PBSO says the person being held at gunpoint had lacerations and swelling to his face and lacerations to his arms and back.During their investigation, deputies learned that the Friedmans knew the people they accused of shoplifting.The employees told the detective that on Aug. 8, the person being held at gunpoint along with an unidentified man came to Just Fishing and stole a fishing reel worth approximately 0. At no time did the Friedmans or other employees notify law enforcement to report the crime.The detective said that on Aug. 16, Daniel Friedman and his son Eric, called the man about the stolen fishing reel. Both he and another man showed up to the store that afternoon. Upon entering the store, PBSO says Eric Friedman confronted the man about the theft. According to the detective, the man and Daniel Friedman began to fight and Daniel Friedman pulled out a shotgun.PBSO says the two men were held against their will at gunpoint. They later told the detective that they were beaten and forced at gunpoint to hand over their cell phones, ,180 in cash and their wallets.According to PBSO, after learning this information, Daniel Friedman and family then became confrontational with deputies regarding the alleged robbery of the men and the family then denied deputies access to the business.PBSO says the store's surveillance video system was disabled between 2:40 p.m. and 4:36 p.m.Deputies say they believe the DVR was unplugged during this time.According to PBSO, at 2:40 p.m. store employee Marc Kellener is observed walking towards the area where the DVR system is located and then the video ceases recording.The video resumes at 4:35 p.m. with one of the men seen lying on the ground with his hands out to his side in the surrender position and the other man seated in a chair in the rear office portion of the store.Eric Friedman is seen yelling at the seated man and Daniel Friedman is seen standing next to him holding a chrome-colored shotgun. Naomi Friedman is seen on video placing a large sum of cash into a white envelope, then place the envelope into a larger mailing envelope and places it into a desk drawer.PBSO says surveillance footage shows Daniel Friedman grabbing one man by the neck and pushing him back down into the chair.At 4:36 p.m., surveillance video shows Marc Kellener walk into the office and punch one of the men twice in the face.At 4:40 p.m., Daniel Friedman is seen on video striking one of the men in the head with the butt of the shotgun. Minutes later Eric Friedman is seen spitting in one man's face multiple times.Daniel Friedman is charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment.Naomi Friedman and Marc Kellener are both charged with two counts of robbery with a firearm, two counts of kidnapping/false imprisonment, and one count of destroying evidence.    3681

(KGTV) - Dozens of people lined up for hours, as Play it Again Sports reopened in La Mesa on Thursday morning.Alfredo Lopez was the first in line, hoping to buy new weights."It says they're really resilient. So I think that's definitely part of what La Mesa has," Lopez says.The store had been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it had to stay closed longer than expected after looters destroyed the store following protests in La Mesa on May 30.The protests were over police violence, but the angry mob that attacked the Play it Again Sports came long after the protests ended."I was not happy. I was upset that night, for sure," says owner Dan Buxton. "So much had been put into the store and for all it to be taken away at that moment, it hurt."Buxton says he had to replace the ceiling, the light fixtures, the flooring, windows, displays, and much of his inventory.But he says the community helped rebuild and showed its true colors."Clearly, the real La Mesa is what we saw after May 30 and we're proud to be part of it," says Buxton.As for the line that greeted him when he opened the store Thursday, Buxton simply said, "Thank you.""Just like the support we've been receiving for the past 7 weeks, it's the same thing," he says. (KGTV) - A new group formed on social media in response to the destruction of looters and arsonists after Saturday's peaceful protest against injustice.La Mesa Civil Defense is a Facebook group formed Monday by Attorney Scott McMillan. McMIllan was devastated by the chaos Saturday night, "we lost our museum, we lost our art gallery, we lost two of our banks... I did not want to see it [La Mesa] burn to the ground."McMillan said the goal of the page is to communicate how they will protect the town should anything happen in the future, "La Mesa Civil Defense is going to stand in front of the buildings with fire extinguishers and garden hoses and their presence."He said he stood at Nebo Dr. and Lemon Ave. from 7:30 p.m. Saturday night until 6 a.m. guarding local businesses and trying to get looters to stop causing destruction.He said a few people spoke with him.One man explained he was upset about George Floyd's death, McMiIllan said he responded saying, "how does breaking (a neighboring boutique that's been around for 10 years) her windows and stealing her merchandise, honor the memory of George Floyd?"He said the man left and came back to tell McMillan he was right.Those are the conversations he hopes blossom from this group and bring peace to La Mesa.McMillan said he is not asking anyone to use lethal force unless they feel like their life is being threatened.He said they are stepping in to help police and firefighters overwhelmed during these times. 10News reached out to La Mesa PD for a comment and have not heard back. 1571
