SAN DIEGO -- A Los Angeles police officer pleaded not guilty Friday to smuggling two Mexican nationals in East San Diego County.Mambasse Koulabalo Patara was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Campo Border Patrol Checkpoint, about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.The court documents claim Patara told Border Patrol agents he was an off-duty officer and showed them his LAPD identification.Patara had two men inside his black Toyota Corolla and appeared to be very nervous, shaking and avoiding eye contact, the Border Patrol said.Agents seized Patara's service pistol from his waistband after he told them he was armed.Patara was taken into custody after authorities say two of the men inside the vehicle admitted they were not U.S. citizens.Fermin Lopez and his nephew, German Ramirez-Gonzalez, admitted to being citizens of Mexico.At his arraignment, Patara pleaded not guilty. The girls were hospitalized in stable condition, according to a GoFundMe page created to raise money for their medical bills.About 4:30 a.m. that day, the toddlers' mother called 911 to report that Brians had taken their children without permission and allegedly contacted her via ``numerous calls and texts ... clearly stating she may not see (them) again,'' according to the GoFundMe.com page.He allegedly threatened to drive the vehicle off the Coronado Bay Bridge, but was later spotted by officers on Hill Street near Cornish Drive and sped off, careening over the side of a cliff and landing upside down in the water, according to police.Moments later, a canine officer also responding to the emergency, 22- year SDPD veteran Jonathan Wiese, arrived in the area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 38-year-old man was stabbed Wednesday morning after confronting a man he saw attempting to break into cars in a Rancho Bernardo parking lot, police said.It happened shortly before 2:10 a.m. near the intersection of Fairlie Road and Bernardo Center Drive, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The 38-year-old man saw a man trying door handles of cars in a parking lot in the area and confronted him, Heims said.They got into an argument before the suspect ran away and the victim chased him, the officer said.The victim caught up to the man and they got into a fight, during which the victim was stabbed at least once, Heims said, adding that the man was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.After the fight, the assailant was last seen running southbound on Bernardo Center Drive.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-10 white man who weighs between 140 and 160 pounds.
