SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. Offenders can even land themselves on the list even if they slip up just once, like burning a pile of an ex's clothing.“Sometimes it was a onetime mistake they may have made in the heat of the moment and it got them on the list for the rest of their lives,” said Pechin.Pechin and his team of detectives with San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team recently used the arson registry after a number of fires erupted across Ocean Beach and Point Loma in September.In the specific case, surveillance video revealed who investigators believed was starting the fires.RELATED: Arson teams investigating five suspicious fires in OB and Point LomaWith the description of the possible suspect, a fairly tall, white man with a thin build, MAST investigators went through the arson registry searching for people known to re-offend in the area.His description helped rule out a number of potential suspects.“It’s just as important as a tool used to exclude someone as it is to include them as a possible suspect,” said Mechin.There are random compliance checks for offenders on the list.“The compliance checks are basically just to make sure they still live in the same location that they gave the local police department when they moved in that area,” said Mechin.If the offender has moved, they must notify local law enforcement of their address change.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Carlsbad dealership arson, charged with insurance fraudPechin said officers have had some problems keeping up with chronic offenders.“If we find out that they are out of compliance we will try to track them down and they can be arrested,” he said.Although the registry helped rule out a number of known arsonists In the Point Loma and Ocean Beach suspicious fires case, a suspect was never arrested.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Metro Arson team at 619-236-6815. 2766

But a former SEAL from San Diego is turning the tables, writing a book about success in business called, “Taking Point: A Navy SEAL’s 10 Fail-Safe Principles For Leading Through Change.” In the book, author Brent Gleeson uses the principles of teamwork he learned in SEAL training and how that culture can lead to success for any growing company. These days you'll find Brent Gleeson in a blazer, on a stage, speaking all over the world to business leaders. But just a few years ago Gleeson’s attire of choice was desert camo, accessorized with the most high-tech equipment as a member of the world's most elite fighting force. However, before his time as a SEAL, Gleeson was in graduate school at SMU in Dallas, he worked in finance, and was an entrepreneur. The blending of those two lives led to this. His newly released book, “Taking Point.” "It's not your typical SEAL book that gives you some leadership philosophies but actually teaches you how to successfully lead lasting change in any company or organization," said Gleeson.The book contains simple philosophies derived directly from his experience training for and on SEAL combat teams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- A San Diego mother says working from home during the coronavirus pandemic cost her her job. She claims she was fired because her kids were making noises in the background of her teleconference calls."We're letting you go," Drisana Rios said. That was what her Human Resources representative told her in a call earlier this month. She said she thought the call was supposed to help resolve her workplace problems. Instead, by the end of the call, she says she was fired.Rios says it all began in mid-March when her bosses at an out-of-state insurance firm told her to work from home and telecommute via conference calls. This was in response to the state's COVID-19 lockdown orders.Rios says all parents working from home received an email from the company's regional boss that read, "thank you for the incredible effort you are putting forth through these difficult times." She says it also said that they would avoid layoffs during the pandemic.Like many parents, Rios was unable to find childcare for her four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son. Despite juggling parenting and working from home, Rios claims she was able to complete all her tasks. She adds that her clients never complained about her kids being in the background of her conference calls. The only complaints, she says, came from her male, direct superior."I said, 'Do you want me to lock my kids in the room? My one-year-old in the room? Do you want me to do that?' And… he responded and said, 'Figure it out.'" Rios said.She says she tried to arrange calls to be during her children's afternoon naptimes but claims her boss continued to ignore and demean her."He would purposely overlap schedules," Rios said.Rios then reached out to her HR department and asked how she should deal with the harassment she says she was experiencing-- a move she says that backfired a week later."She was shamed for having children, so she first elevated it to Human Resources," Daphne Delvaux, Sr. trial attorney at Gruenberg Law, said. "Human Resources took the side of the abusive manager, and terminated her for complaining."Rios has since filed a lawsuit against both her direct boss and the company for Gender discrimination, Retaliation, Gender harassment, Failure to prevent gender discrimination, Negligent supervision, Intentional infliction of emotional distress, and Wrongful termination in violation of public policy.In her complaint, Rios claims her HR representative told her that the company was "...experiencing a reduced revenue due to COVID-19 and they were laying [the] plaintiff off as a result of the pandemic." But Rios believes this was retaliation."The fact that they tried to cover it up because I went to HR, it's obvious what they did," Rios said.ABC 10News reached out to the company headquarters for comment on this lawsuit.
