SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal officials in San Diego Wednesday announced the arrests of hundreds of suspects and the seizure of more than a ton and a half of narcotics as part of a crackdown on a Mexican criminal gang considered responsible for much of the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.During a late-morning briefing at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Kearny Mesa offices, DEA and Justice Department officials detailed the results of the multi-agency operation targeting the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion."Project Python is the single-largest strike by U.S. authorities against CJNG, and this is just the beginning," DEA Acting Administrator Uttam Dhillon said. The six-month enforcement campaign has resulted in the capture of more than 600 gang associates and 350 indictments, including one against the alleged head of the criminal organization, fugitive Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as "El Mencho."The Department of State has issued one of the largest narcotics crimes- related rewards ever -- million -- for information leading to the arrest of Cervantes. In San Diego and Imperial counties, the operation has led to the arrests of about 130 CJNG associates and seizure of 3,282 pounds of methamphetamine, 198 kilograms of cocaine, 59 kilograms of heroin, 44 kilograms of fentanyl, two kilograms of opium, in excess of 27,000 fentanyl pills and 18 guns, according to the DEA.The Jalisco-based cartel is one of the fastest-growing transnational criminal organizations in Mexico and among the most prolific methamphetamine producers in the world, and is the source of a large amount of drugs entering the United States and elevated levels of violence in Mexico, according to federal officials.Last month, Cervantes' son and second-in-command, Ruben Oseguera "Menchito" Gonzalez, was extradited from Mexico to the United States on drug- trafficking charges. Also in February, the alleged drug lord's daughter, Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez, was arrested in the United States on financial charges related to her suspected violations of the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act."Today, DEA has disrupted CJNG's operations, and there is more to come as DEA continues its relentless attack on this remorseless criminal organization," Dhillon said. 2307

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A person at Morse High School was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.HHSA is working with the San Diego Unified School District to notify those who were potentially exposed and provide TB testing. The dates of exposure are from Feb. 28 to March 13 of this year.Morse High School, in the Skyline area of San Diego, is currently participating in social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 and onsite TB screening will not be available.According to the HHSA, students who were identified as being potentially exposed to TB can get tested with their primary care provider. Students who do not have a medical provider should contact the county's TB Control Program at 619-692-8621 to arrange to arrange an appointment for a free test.School teachers and staff will be provided testing by the San Diego Unified School District. The disease is transmitted from person to person through indoor air during prolonged contact with an infectious person. Most people who are exposed to TB do not become infected."Testing is recommended for all those exposed to make sure they are not infected, since initial infection usually has no symptoms," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "If a person is infected, early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the infectious form of the disease."Symptoms of infectious TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. People infected with the disease, or who are immunocompromised, may not show symptoms. It can be cured with antibiotics.Tuberculosis is not uncommon in the region but has been decreasing since the early 1990s and has stabilized in recent years. In 2013, a total of 206 cases were reported in the county, the lowest number since local TB cases peaked at 469 in 1993. There were 237 cases reported in 2017 and 226 in 2018. Last year, 265 residents were diagnosed with TB. To date, 67 cases have been reported in 2020.For more information on this potential exposure, the county HHSA recommends calling the county TB Control Program or Morse High School at 619- 725-5519. 2209

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County supervisors voted 4-1 today to have the chief administrative officer direct the Health and Human Services Agency to develop a plan for in-house medical care of jail inmates and possible outsourcing of those duties as well.Sheriff Bill Gore will review the plan, and officials will also put out requests for proposals from private contractors to handle those duties.Supervisor Dianne Jacob made the motion to examine both an in-house model and outsourcing.``I don't think we should go with just one approach,'' Jacob said, adding she is a proponent of outsourcing county services, if it results in good service for less money.Gore has cited his department's million annual health care bill for inmates as a reason to explore cost-saving strategies. He asked supervisors to consider possible vendors for the county's health care needs in its jails and other facilities.Gore told supervisors that his goal was simply to get the best care at the best value, with an aging population of inmates and other serious issues.``I am proud of our response to these challenges, but I'm not one to assume that I have all the answer to these challenges,'' Gore said.Gore also objected to waiting 180 days for a staff appraisal of outsourcing. ``If it's a good idea in sixth months, it's a good idea today,'' he added. He also praised the 300 men and women who provide medical care to inmates as outstanding employees.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, who is opposed to any privatization of services and proposed having HHSA handle inmate care, cast the lone no vote. Before the board voted, Fletcher said outsourcing to a for-profit entity would not lead to a better outcome.``As a board, we are the ones who are on the hook,'' in terms of lawsuits if an inmate doesn't get the appropriate care, Fletcher said. ``We should have input.''Fletcher asked the board to vote on his proposal to have the HHSA administer medical and behavioral health services in jails, but the motion died for lack of a second.Board Chairman Greg Cox said he was encouraged that HHSA would develop its own proposal.Cox praised both county medical employees and contractors for working in such a demanding field, but said the system right now is too bifurcated, adding that several legal items on Tuesday's closed-session agenda involved inmate care.Supervisors voted after a lengthy public hearing, in which nearly every person who called was opposed to private outsourcing. Health care workers mentioned low morale at some detention facilities, and the risks workers are taking during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most speakers identified themselves as members of Service Employees International Union, Local 221. 2697

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A train struck and killed a pedestrian in Old Town Thursday, authorities reported. The rail fatality in the 4000 block of Taylor Street occurred about 11:30 a.m., according to sheriff's officials.Details on the circumstances of the death, including the victim's age and gender, were not immediately available.Due to the fatality, Coaster passenger-train service was delayed until further notice, North County Transit District advised.
