NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio grabbed a roller Thursday and helped paint the words "Black Lives Matter" front of the namesake Manhattan tower of President Donald Trump.De Blasio was flanked by his wife, Chirlane McCray, and the Rev. Al Sharpton as he helped paint the racial justice rallying cry in giant yellow letters on Fifth Avenue in front of Trump Tower."We are liberating Fifth Avenue," de Blasio said. "We are uplifting Fifth Avenue."The NYC Department of Transportation closed off the avenue between 56th and 57th streets around 7 a.m. Thursday in preparation for the painting.The DOT said the block would remain closed to automobile traffic until Sunday, however, the bus lane will be operational sooner.The mural was originally set to be painted on July 2, but was postponed due to "logistics," de Blasio said at the time. NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — The teacher whose actions stopped a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School om Friday said his actions were, in his mind, "the only acceptable actions."Science teacher Jason Seaman didn't say much Monday morning in his first press conference since the shooting on Friday. But what he did say only reinforced what many already know about Seaman: It's not about him. He brushed off credit for stopping the shooter, instead praising other teachers, students and the school resource officer at the school. "I want to make it clear that my actions on that day, in my mind, were the only acceptable actions I could've done given the circumstances," Seaman said. "I deeply care for my students and their well-being. That is why I did what I did that day."Police say Seaman, 29, tackled a student who started firing in his classroom Friday morning. He was shot three times during the incident, but released from the hospital Saturday. Ella Whistler, a student at the school, was shot Friday. Her family says she's doing well at Riley Hospital for Children."I can't say enough how proud of Ella I am and how we all should be," Seaman said. "Her courage and strength is nothing short of remarkable and we should continue to keep her in our minds as she continues to recover."After the press conference, Seaman honored at an Indiana Sectional Championship baseball game between Noblesville High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School. Noblesville Schools is selling T-shirts to raise money for Seaman and Whistler. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are dropping a controversial piece of coronavirus guidance and telling all those who have been in close contact with infected people to get tested.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) essentially returned to its previous guidance about such tests."Due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, this guidance further reinforces the need to test asymptomatic persons, including close contacts of a person with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection," the CDC wrote in a "clarification" posted Friday. With the change, the CDC got rid of language posted last month that said people who didn’t feel sick didn’t need to get tested.That August change set off a rash of criticism from health experts who couldn’t fathom why the nation’s top public health agency would say such a thing amid a pandemic that has been difficult to control.The New York Times reports that last month's change was not actually written by CDC scientists and was posted to the agency’s website despite their serious objections. It reportedly came from the Department of Health and Human Services.The CDC website now says testing is recommended for all close contacts of persons with SARS-CoV-2 infection. "Because of the potential for asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, it is important that contacts of individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection be quickly identified and tested," the agency writes. 1458

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump's former lawyer has been released from prison after a federal judge ruled that a move to revoke his home confinement was retaliatory.Michael Cohen was released from a prison in Otisville, New York on Friday after U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ordered him freed on Thursday.Cohen had sued the government saying he was ordered back to prison on July 9 because he was writing a book about Trump.Hellerstein said Cohen’s First Amendment rights were violated by the decision.The Bureau of Prisons said Cohen's book plans played no role in his reimprisonment. 608

North Korea has agreed to refrain from conducting nuclear and missile tests while engaging in dialogue with South Korea, Seoul's national security chief Chung Eui-yong said Tuesday after returning from a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.Chung added that Pyongyang also expressed willingness to talk to the United States "in an open-ended dialogue to discuss the issue of denuclearization and to normalize relations with North Korea."Chung said that as part of the dialogue, the two Koreas would hold a summit next month, the first of its kind in more than a decade.The last inter-Korean summit was in 2007, when South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun met Kim's father, late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.The meeting will be held at the Panmunjom Peace House on the South Korean side of the demilitarized zone that divides the two countries, Chung said.Pyongyang and Seoul will also open a communication hotline that will enable Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in to speak directly.Moon sent Chung and four other top government officials to Pyongyang Monday, when they met with Kim and some of his top aides.It's believed to be the first time the young North Korean leader has ever met with any officials from South Korea since taking power in 2011.Developing story - more to come  1312
