A new study takes a look at how deep the problem of plastics in the ocean goes. Studies have looked at the quantity and spread of plastics in the world’s oceans, and now scientists are getting a better idea of how much of that litter is sinking down to the sea bed.The study, from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, estimates there is 14 million metric tons of microplastics sitting on the ocean floor. That would be more than 35x as much plastic scientists believe is floating on the surface of the ocean.Microplastics are defined as pieces of plastic that have been worn down by the ocean and other elements into tiny fragments, smaller than 5 millimeters.The team collected samples of deep-sea sediments up to 9,800 feet deep from sites around the Great Australian Bight off the coast of South Australia. The robotic submarine took 51 samples.Scientists found an average of 1.26 microplastic pieces per gram of sediment in the samples.Dr. Denise Hardesty, Principal Research Scientist and co-author of the study, said they were "surprised to observe high microplastic loads in such a remote location.""Our research found that the deep ocean is a sink for microplastics," Hardesty said. "By identifying where and how much microplastic there is, we get a better picture of the extent of the problem."Around 150 million metric tons of plastic are already floating in our oceans -- with an additional eight million tons entering the water each year, according to the World Economic Forum.The researchers say most of the plastic dumped into the ocean likely ends up on the coasts, rather than on the ocean's surface or floor.The samples were taken in the spring of 2017; the study was published in Frontiers in Marine Science on Monday. 1750

A Milwaukee woman applied for a job only to be told by the company that they don't hire people with "ghetto" names.Quinntellia Fields says she received the email response on Monday after applying for a receptionist job at Mantality Health through a third-party site.Mantality Health has multiple locations in the Midwest. Fields said she was applying for a job at their Brookfield, Wisconsin location."First, I thought it was a joke," she said.The quick response looked legit, until she got to the line that said, "Unfortunately we do not consider candidates that have suggestive 'ghetto' names.""That’s pretty offensive," Fields said. "I was pretty shocked and then I was hurt."She contacted the company who told her the outside job board was hacked.In a statement posted on the company's website, Mantality says it's working with law enforcement and considering appropriate legal action."We share the anger and frustration of those who received these bogus emails," the company's statement read in part."Seems like the typical response," Fields said. "If someone’s in trouble on the internet, 'Oh it’s just a hack.'"Fields isn't the only job seeker who received this reply. A scary moment happened for parents and young kids when a fight broke out at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club near Lindell Road and Edna Avenue in Las Vegas.It's not clear yet how it all started but from the video, it appears that a number of adults were involved. But what concerns parents most is there were a lot of young children, even babies in the audience when the fight started. What seemed like a heated argument turns into a fistfight within seconds. People were throwing wild punches, shoving and tackling each other as others tried to break the fight.Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas spoke with a parent who was at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club. Concerned with his kid's safety, he did not want to be identified."It was scary you know just to know that all those kids around, and how fast the situation escalated... just one second everybody was having fun and the next second it was chaos," the parent said. "It was a 'think fast' moment because the kids were close. More than anything it was just getting the kids out of the way and then figuring out what was going on."KTNV reached out to Boys and Girls Club and the National Youth Sports League which oversees the game.The League responded saying it is still "gathering facts" saying, "If found that any of the individuals were involved in our league they will be immediately removed and we will press charges. A massive scam related to COVID-19 that targeted millions of Office 365 users in 62 countries was stopped by Microsoft's digital crimes unit.The department is almost like a police department. There's even an evidence room. It's an office that is only known to the people whose job it is to investigate attacks on Microsoft customers. They're a small group, but they're mighty.Tom Burt, the Corporate Vice President for Customer Security and Trust, said the team is comprised of "lawyers, forensic investigators data analysts, business people."Burt is in charge of the cybersecurity team that goes after cybercriminals. Their job is to find, intercept and then help law enforcement stop the scam artists in their tracks."(We're) looking for things that we shouldn't be seeing in the data relevant to how Office 365 was being used by our costumers," Burt said. "When we see that we can dive deeper, look at the metadata and look at the information that's streaming through our Office 365 global network — to try to find indicators of people doing bad things."The team often uses social media to alert people to the hacks they're seeing.Cybercriminals often target people's fears and anxiety. So, these days, the coronavirus pandemic is a good hook.One of the recent lures was a "cure for coronavirus" or "COVID-19 safety tips" from the Red Cross. The hackers were hoping Officer 365 users would take the bait and click."They're able to get control of users' Office 365 accounts," Burt said. "They can then see what's going on in that account. They can act as if they're you — they can send email in your name and look to find things in your email account like passwords and other information."Burt says the hackers are good. They do research and figure out how companies are structured and who does what. They'll look at social sites and figure out exactly who to target.Some of the scams people were getting involved co-workers asking others to transfer money to an account."They're sophisticated criminals," Burt said. 'They do this work to make sure the requests look legitimate so they can be successful in stealing money."Burt says there's an easy way to prevent phishing attacks."The number one thing by far is to utilize two factor authentication on all of your accounts," he said. "If you're a business,s make sure you're doing that for your business email if you're an individual, make sure you're doing it for your individual email and financial accounts."Burt is referencing the separate codes a user gets when logging on to a website. The site will give a prompt so they can prove that they are.The cybersecurity team says two-fact authentication will eliminate 98-99 percent of attacks.The challenge has always been to find the cybercriminals. So, this time around, the digital unit went around them."We're saying, let's stop them in a different way," Burt said. "Let's take the internet tools that they're using to conduct their crime, and let's go legally take those tools away from them."Court documents from the civil case filed in Federal Court say that Microsoft has the authority to take away the tools the hackers need to conduct their scams."Basically, websites, locations on the internet from which they can conduct their fraudulent activities — whether it's launching their efforts or the place where they want you to ultimately go — we go with the court order to those registrars and transfer those domains to Microsoft control," Burt said.Doing that strips hackers' access and gives Microsoft the ability to block them."We took down the criminal infrastructure that was being used to defraud people in 62 countries," Burt said. "We're going to keep doing that work. We're committed. Its fun, it's fascinating and, most importantly, it protects our customers." 3791
