The sudden and abrupt breakdown of the US Postal Service has unfolded in recent days as Democrats call for a funding boost ahead of this year’s presidential election. On Friday, the USPS announced a temporary price increase in some services from Oct. 18 until Dec. 27. The rate hike affects commercial services, as retail services are not affected.Meanwhile, the USPS has been removing mailboxes and processing machines. The machines and mailboxes are being removed across the country, according to local reports from a number of Scripps stations. On Friday, CNN and the Washington Post reported that a number of states have received letters from the Postal Service warning that they might not have the ability to ensure ballots are sent and returned in a timely manner. The warning comes as more Americans are expected to utilize mail-in voting due to the coronavirus pandemic.“The Postal Service is asking election officials and voters to realistically consider how the mail works,” Martha Johnson, a spokeswoman for the USPS, said in a statement to the Washington Post.Despite requesting a mail-in ballot himself for next week’s Florida primary, President Donald Trump has tried to sow doubt in recent weeks over the reliability of mail-in voting, claiming that the process is ripe with fraud. But there has been limited evidence to suggest his fears are founded. With the postal service facing financial troubles due to rising pension costs and decreasing usage, Trump said he would agree to funding the Postal Service, but would need some concessions from Democrats."Sure, if they gave us what we want. And it’s not what I want, it’s what the American people want," Trump said Friday. 1694

The suspect in the deadly terror attack in New York wasn't only a driver for Uber. He also worked for its rival Lyft.Lyft said late Wednesday that Sayfullo Saipov drove for its ride-hailing app in the past but that it deactivated his account as soon as he was identified as a suspect in the attack.Saipov, a 29-year-old from Uzbekistan who was living in New Jersey, has been charged with federal terrorism offenses in connection with Tuesday's attack in Manhattan in which eight people were killed.Uber said Tuesday that Saipov started driving for it in New Jersey just over six months ago, making more than 1,400 trips. It also banned him from its platform after the attack.Lyft didn't provide details on how long Saipov drove for its app or how many trips he made. It's not unusual for drivers to work for both companies.Saipov's case is drawing renewed attention to the background checks that ride-hailing companies carry out on their drivers.Records show Saipov received multiple traffic citations in the past, including failure to equip a motor vehicle carrier with or maintain a required brake system. Both Uber and Lyft said they hadn't come across any complaints about Saipov's safety as a driver for them.New Jersey rules for ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft require the companies to conduct criminal background checks, which are usually outsourced to specialist firms. Convictions for crimes like reckless driving automatically disqualify a driver.Uber applies different criteria for background checks depending on state regulations. In general, drivers cannot have more than three minor moving violations, such as speeding tickets, in the past three years.Lyft's website says potential drivers are screened for "driving incidents" but doesn't specify what would disqualify them. Both Uber and Lyft say they are in contact with law enforcement authorities over the New York attack."Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic act," Lyft said. 1999

The recount effort underway in Georgia has uncovered roughly 2,600 ballots that hadn’t originally been included in the tally.State officials say county election officials in Floyd County didn’t upload in-person early votes from a memory card into a ballot scanning machine, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper.Floyd County is located in northwest Georgia. In the uncounted votes, there were 1,643 new votes for President Donald Trump and 865 votes for President-elect Joe Biden. County officials say these ballots rectify their discrepancy between the number of people who checked-in to vote and the number of ballots counted in Floyd County.President Trump's campaign issued a statement Tuesday afternoon in response to reports of the previously unaccounted ballots."Recent revelations from Georgia's ongoing statewide recount have shown that President Trump was absolutely correct to raise concerns about widespread voting irregularities that have favored the Biden-Harris ticket," the statement reads. "The State of Georgia must not certify its results until the recount is done accurately and the results are correct."“It’s not an equipment issue. It’s a person not executing their job properly,” said Gabriel Sterling, the state’s voting system manager. “This is the kind of situation that requires a change at the top of their management side."The head of the Republican Party in Floyd County said the issue was concerning, but “doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue,” and he was glad the ballot audit revealed it.Georgia’s audit of the nearly 5 million ballots cast is set to be finalized Friday. 1632

The wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Rebecca Zahau focused Thursday on the thoroughness of the investigation, with the lead Sheriff's detective on the case taking the stand. Zahau's death was ruled a suicide by four different investigative agencies but the Zahau family believes Rebecca was murdered by her boyfriend's brother, Adam Shacknai. The questioning by David Elsberg, attorney for Adam Shacknai, was aimed at showing investigators left no stone unturned. Elsberg's initial focus was on dispelling the scream that a neighbor reported may have come from the Coronado mansion around the time of Rebecca's death.  As Adam Shacknai's attorney pointed at areas of an overhead projection screen of the Coronado mansion, Detective Tsuida said the reported scream actually came from an area northwest of the property, toward the beach, and not from the balcony area where Rebecca Zahau was found dead. The attorney also showed a series of photos of footprints on the balcony, including bare prints that would support Rebecca standing on the balcony and near the balcony's edge. The questioning by Elsberg went on to the collection of potential DNA evidence and the intricate detail work involved.  Detective Tsuida testified that none of Adam Shacknai's DNA was found on the rope or knife, or several other items that might suggest he had anything to do with her death. 1480
