DEL MAR (KGTV) — For the first time, researchers set up receivers along San Diego coast with the ability to record when sharks are near. California State University Long Beach spent Wednesday working with Del Mar lifeguards as they dropped three receivers along the coast and tried tagging sharks nearby. Unfortunately, no sharks were tagged.Chris Lowe, with Shark Lab, tells 10News, “we just got money from the state to expand it throughout all of California.” They have receivers from Avila to the Mexico border but none located between Oceanside and La Jolla."This is a big gap for us,” Lowe says.Each receiver collects data from any tagged shark within 500 yards of the device. The receiver logs the time, date and is able to identify the exact shark based on the scanned tag. For a decade, CSU Long Beach has been studying the patterns of sharks and working to collect enough data to eventually predict where sharks will be at certain times of the year. 967

DENVER, Colorado — Police officers found the body of 7-year-old Jordan Vong inside the family’s home while executing a search warrant Tuesday night and announced a 16-year-old girl had been arrested for investigation on first-degree murder charges in connection with his death.Denver Police Division Chief Joe Montoya said officers found Vong’s body concealed within the home during the search. He said that Vong’s body was discovered around 9 p.m. and that police believe it was “intentionally concealed.”Montoya said that they discovered additional evidence overnight that led them to take the 16-year-old girl into custody Wednesday morning. He said he could not say anything further about her relationship to Vong because she is a juvenile.Vong was reported missing around 4:30 p.m.?Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, they learned the child had been missing for a few hours already. Police said a family member made the report, but he did not identify the reporting party. Police, family and community members began an immediate search of the area where he was last seen, near his home at Chambers Road and Bolling Drive in the Montbello neighborhood. But the search came to an end when police announced they located Vong’s body at a Tuesday evening news conference.Two girls at Greenwood Middle School, which sits right next to the elementary school, said they befriended Vong after seeing him playing alone on the school’s playground.“We would play tag with him, and I remember asking him what’s his name. And he would say, ‘Jordan’ all smiling and happy,” said 13-year-old Luz Padilla. “When we asked him who were his friends, he would say, ‘I don’t have no friends. You guys are my only friends.’”Gisele Perez, who lives close to Vong and is also 13, said she decided to play with Vong because he was always alone.“When we played with him he just seemed really happy. He seemed like someone cared about him,” Perez said.Both said they were heartbroken to learn that Vong was missing and then found dead.“It’s all about Jordan today because, like, he was really nice and a caring kid, so it’s really heartbreaking that he passed away,” Perez said.“We were all crying and sad because he was such a nice kid,” said Padilla.A candlelight vigil is planned to remember Vong Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Greenwood Elementary School, located at 5130 Durham Court in Denver. DENVER — Sunday was a long day for Kathryn Coogan, who drove around the Highland neighborhood in Denver looking for Rubble, her 4-year old son's therapy dog.Rubble was apparently stolen Saturday night.The Wheat Ridge, Colorado mom had taken the 9-month-old plott hound mix to a restaurant/bar on the 2200 block of West 32nd Avenue, tying his leash to the railing out front, while she went inside to visit with friends."He was wearing a red turtleneck sweater," she said. "He had his little toy and a bone."Coogan said when she came back outside, Rubble was gone."This dog is really, really, really important to my family and my son," she said, while choking back tears. "I have a special needs little boy. He's Rubble's daddy."Coogan said they adopted Rubble when he was three months old."He was found on the side of a road with all his siblings in a box of rocks, which is why his name is Rubble," she said.Coogan said witnesses told her that a man and a woman walked by the restaurant, turned around, came back and asked whose dog that was.  She said they were told that it belonged to someone in the restaurant."They unleashed him," she said, "and started walking toward Tejon Street."Coogan said she can't help but wonder if someone thought the dog shouldn't have been out in the cold."I don't know if he took him, if he dropped him off, if he woke up and realized he stole someone's dog," she said, "or if he's trying to make a point."She said if that's the case, he didn't handle it right."If it's 100 degrees and in the car, hell yeah, break the window," she said, "but we were right here."She's pleading for Rubble's return.Coogan said she spent the day Sunday filing a police report, posting fliers in the neighborhood and searching for Rubble."I just want my dog back," she said. 1837

(KGTV) -- High winds in the Descanso area knocked over two big rig trucks early Thursday morning, prompting emergency crews to rescue people trapped inside.At around 4 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers were called to eastbound Interstate 8 near Japatul Valley Road after reports a semitruck toppled over due to the strong winds swirling in the area.Two people were removed from the truck and taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.Moments later and a few hundred feet away, crews rushed to another big rig that was knocked down by the winds.Crews broke the truck’s windshield and extricated a man, woman and dog trapped inside the cab. It is unknown if the couple and dog were injured.A High Wind Advisory was issued for I-8 from Lake Jennings to Forrester Road; high-profile vehicles are prohibited on that stretch of I-8. 872
