Beverage makers would become responsible for helping consumers recycle, with oversight by the state.“When you put it on industry to take responsibility, and you set a redemption goal and have strong state oversight, they then have an incentive to run it right,” said Tucker.In Oregon, almost all stores are required to take back containers and issue 10 cents per item. There are also “BottleDrop Express” kiosks where customers can leave bags full of mixed recyclables and instantly receive money in an electronic account.Some groups have opposed the bill, saying it could hurt the already struggling neighborhood recycling centers.William Dermody, a spokesman for the American Beverage Association, said industry is ready to work with California lawmakers on a system to recycle, reclaim and reuse plastic, according to the Associated Press."America's beverage companies and local California bottlers share the goal of improving the recycling and reuse of plastic in California," he said.The bill would also add CRV onto wine and hard liquor bottles in 2024.RECYCLING TIPSRegardless of the outcome of SB 372, residents in San Diego have several recycling options. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego student Emily Benkes says her mother has lived in their Carmel Mountain home for 32 years, never once feeling unsafe in the neighborhood.Tuesday, Benkes came home to a ransacked house. “We had our laptops out, I had some money on my desk, Xbox was gone, my Apple TV,” said Benkes. Benkes believes the person hopped their backyard fence, coming in from a nearby trail. Food was missing from the fridge, including a package of salami which they later found on the trail. The suspect entered the home by throwing a rock through the back window and climbing in. “I felt really violated, I couldn’t even go in my room just because I kept thinking that there was somebody in here going through my stuff,” Benkes.She posted what happened on Nextdoor, and now neighbors are trying to help; one neighbor believes their surveillance video captured someone hopping the fence. “I hope we catch this person and nobody else has this happen to them,” said Benkes. And then getting ready so that as soon as I get sworn in, I can hit the ground running," Jacobs told ABC 10News.Jacobs says the new Congress' first priority will be helping the nation bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic. She says she'll insist any new round of stimulus spending will include funding to help small businesses and families, including child care.In her victory speech, Jacobs pointed out that at 31, she'll be one of the youngest members of Congress, and just the third woman to represent the San Diego region. Aeiramique Glass Blake, an activist and friend of Jacobs, says her election is inspiring to young San Diegans. "As young people, we need somebody who understands the dynamic and the perspective that we are coming from," says Glass Blake.Glass Blake says that while she knows Jacobs will work hard to represent all members of her district, she also realizes the importance of serving as a young woman in Congress. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sandy Sim came all the way from Fallbrook just to find out that she was locked out of 101 Ash Street. She was one of multiple people who came to the downtown building thinking the skyscraper was open for city business. Instead, it was shuttered Wednesday after the county found traces of asbestos on one the 17th floor. "I think the building should be removed, should be brought down, and just put up another building. It will probably be cheaper too," said Ignacio Alcaraz, a Spring Valley resident who had just left City Hall. The city inked the deal for the former Sempra Headquarters in 2017 with the plan of moving 1,100 employees into it to save on rent. But the building has remained vacant for all but about a month since then, after the city discovered numerous problems and needed repairs. City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.
