SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Many Americans say cell phone are their lifelines. But what happens when yours breaks? Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores. SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Anglers and biologists believe California is likely to experience an increase of chinook salmon during the fall run resulting from the coronavirus and fewer fish caught during the summer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported state and federal scientists earlier this year forecast more than 473,000 adult salmon off the San Francisco Bay Area coast from the Sacramento River system. The forecast is a big jump from 380,000 last year and 224,000 in 2018. The season for the fish also called king salmon was delayed from its scheduled opening, with more than two months of fishing shut down. 618

Many are desperately looking for qualified tutors as families safely go back to school. But we found that the demand for tutors is not matching up with what is currently available.As the start of the distance-learning school year approaches, parents are beginning to feel the pressure."Desperate," parent, Cortney Lemos-Crawford laughed. "Desperate because of my own sanity!"Lemos-Crawford says she and her husband are fortunate to still have their jobs during the pandemic. But it is demanding. Distance learning for their 8-year-old daughter in March was not easy."It's very difficult, as you can imagine, to work full-time and have your child present, let alone present and needing your interaction," she said.She says it was hard for her daughter to concentrate at home, in a relaxing environment, with toys all around. She also does not want her daughter's formative years to suffer because of her own work schedule. So for weeks, she has been searching for a personal tutor.Jamie Evans and her partner Hannah Obradovich are former teachers who now run Ignite Learning Center in La Jolla. They provide K through 12 and Special education support around the county."We have been inundated with parents wanting us to form 'Pandemic pods,' garage groups, working outside, working with small groups with different age children to hire us to be their teachers," Evans said.But Evans says the supply of accredited teachers and tutors are not even close to the recent demand from desperate parents."We are in a rush to hire more teachers," Evans said. "I already talked to three people this morning, and I'm going to an interview right now."Lemos-Crawford says her tutor search so far has come up empty."I've had a couple of leads, but those people have been snatched up," she said.But she is not giving up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A new study shows that young adults are seeing a spike in deaths from liver disease related to binge drinking. It's especially dangerous in California, where high alcohol content drinks are popular.The study, published this month in the British Medical Journal, says that the number of 25- to 34-year-olds who died annually from alcohol-related liver disease nearly tripled between 1999 and 2016, from 259 in 1999 to 767 in 2016, an average annual increase of around 10 percent.It cites binge drinking as a leading cause, because of rising rates of alcohol consumption between 2002 and 2012.It's especially bad in California, which the study says was among the top five states for those types of deaths.Local experts say the kind of alcohol we drink may be to blame, as craft beers tend to have higher concentrations of alcohol."If someone was having highly concentrated alcohol, then they're consuming more drinks per hour," says Dr. Rohit Loomba, with the UC San Diego Health Liver Center. "That will have detrimental effects on the liver, for sure."The CDC recommends no more than 1-2 drinks per day for "moderate" drinking. Binge drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks over 4-6 hours. Loomba says you may hit the "binge" point in fewer drinks if what you're having is stronger.For example, a Bud Light has just 4.2% alcohol by volume. Craft beers often have 6% or higher, so one craft beer may be as much as 2 or 3 other drinks."That quantity of alcohol intake over years definitely will contribute to higher risk for liver disease," says Loomba.He says people should ask themselves four questions to determine if they are drinking too much:1. Have you ever cut down on drinking? 2. Would you be annoyed if somebody asked you to cut down on drinking? 3. Do you feel guilty after drinking excessively over a weekend? 4. Do you need an "eye-opener" in the morning to get to work?Dr. Loomba says if you answered "yes" to 2 or more of these questions, you should talk to your doctor to discuss treatment.He also says obesity combined with alcohol can lead to more severe liver problems and even death. People with diabetes or who are overweight multiply their risk of the disease."If you're obese, you not only should restrict your alcohol, but you should try to lose some weight as well," says Loomba.The study says the financial crisis may have led to more binge drinking in the past decade, as young adults turned to alcohol to cope with financial stress. Researchers found the rise in alcohol-related deaths overlaps with rising rates of binge drinking from 2002 to 2012 observed across much of the U.S.The good news, according to the study, is that many liver diseases are preventable and reversible."Once you stop alcohol use, you can reverse complications related to it in the majority of cases," says Dr. Loomba. 2882
