SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - A 68-year-old man was struck by an SUV and killed crossing a street outside of a crosswalk in San Ysidro, police said this morning.The accident occurred near a Shell gas station in the 300 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard near Border Village Road about 9:25 p.m. Friday, according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.A 45-year-old woman driving a 2016 Dodge Journey made a left turn out of the gas station parking lot onto East San Ysidro Boulevard at the same time the man attempted to cross from the south side of the street to the north side, Heims said.The man was struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.Alcohol was not considered a factor in the crash and the person at fault was yet to be determined, Heims said.Anyone with information on this deadly crash was asked to call Traffic Division investigators at 858-495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 960

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection near the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday night. The San Diego Police Department told 10News the suspect is a 23-year-old man in a white pickup truck who was trying to drive into the United States from Mexico.Police say he had been directed to a secondary screening area but failed to stop for an inspection and began firing at border agents. The man attempted to drive away, but authorities shot back. SDPD said at least seven CBP officers fired their weapons, killing the driver.According to a witness who was driving to the border from National City, police could be heard telling someone to pull over. The witness added that a police helicopter could also be seen in the area. San Diego Police say they're helping with the shooting investigation, which originally involved Border Patrol and CBP. Marco Sotomayor, Secretary of Public Security in Tijuana, tweeted that CBP closed all lanes of the port during the incident, but quickly reopened them. 1075

Jay Inslee signed legislation Tuesday making Washington the first state to approve composting as an alternative to burying or cremating human remains.It allows licensed facilities to offer "natural organic reduction," which turns a body, mixed with substances such as wood chips and straw, into about two wheelbarrows' worth of soil in a span of several weeks.Loved ones are allowed to keep the soil to spread, just as they might spread the ashes of someone who has been cremated — or even use it to plant vegetables or a tree."It gives meaning and use to what happens to our bodies after death," said Nora Menkin, executive director of the Seattle-based People's Memorial Association, which helps people plan for funerals.Supporters say the method is an environmentally friendly alternative to cremation, which releases carbon dioxide and particulates into the air, and conventional burial, in which people are drained of their blood, pumped full of formaldehyde and other chemicals that can pollute groundwater, and placed in a nearly indestructible coffin, taking up land."That's a serious weight on the earth and the environment as your final farewell," said Sen. Jamie Pedersen, the Seattle Democrat who sponsored the measure.He said the legislation was inspired by his neighbor: Katrina Spade, who was an architecture graduate student at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, when she began researching the funeral industry. She came up with the idea for human composting, modeling it on a practice farmers have long used to dispose of livestock.She tweaked the process and found that wood chips, alfalfa and straw created a mixture of nitrogen and carbon that accelerates natural decomposition when a body is placed in a temperature- and moisture-controlled vessel and rotated.A pilot project at Washington State University tested the idea last year on six bodies, all donors who Spade said wanted to be part of the study.In 2017, Spade founded Recompose, a company working to bring the concept to the public. The law, which takes effect in May 2020, added composting as well as alkaline hydrolysis, a process already legal in 19 other states. Seattle police have moved in to break up the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) after Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order early Wednesday morning declaring the gathering illegal.According to the Seattle Times and KOMO-TV, about a dozen protesters were arrested Wednesday morning as police ordered those present to leave the area.Demonstrators have occupied the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle for about three weeks. The protesters moved in earlier this month after police abandoned the department's East Precinct — which is located in the neighborhood — over fears of riots.While the occupation was largely peaceful for several weeks, the area has seen four shootings since June 20, some of them deadly.The protests began in the wake of the death of George Floyd, and were part of a nationwide protest movement against systemic racism and police brutality.Last month, CHOP leadership released a list of demands calling for the abolishment of the Seattle Police Department, a retrial for all people of color serving prison sentences for violent crime and the de-gentrification of the city, among other demands. 1138

Say goodbye to another 40 Sears and Kmart stores.Sears Holdings (SHLD), the bankrupt parent company of the two retailers, said Thursday that 11 Kmart locations and 29 Sears stores will close their doors in February 2019 — adding to the nearly 200?locations the company has already said will shut down in coming months.The closures are part of Sears Holdings' efforts to drastically reduce costs and find a viable way forward as it moves through bankruptcy proceedings. The company has?been struggling for several years and is drowning in debt.Liquidation sales at the 40 locations "are expected to begin late next week," the company said.Sears Holdings operated about 1,000 stores as recently as February but has been shuttering underperforming stores. When the company filed for bankruptcy last month, it said it only had about 400 stores that could turn a profit. Now, it's in the process of shedding more dead weight.In its bankruptcy filing, Sears named 142 of its worst-performing stores that would shut down in the coming months.
