Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, announced on Sunday that he is self-quarantining himself after learning that he had interacted with someone who tested positive with COVID-19 at last week's CPAC Conference. The conference was attended by top Republican officials, including President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. Cruz confirmed in a statement on Sunday that he briefly interacted with the patient, and that he shook hands with the person. Health experts said that the public should avoid direct contact with those carrying the virus, no matter if they're showing symptoms. Cruz said in a statement that he has not come down with any COVID-19 symptoms, and has been in contract with a number of officials, including Pence and newly-announced White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. He added that he is self-quarantining as a precaution as his brief interaction does not meet the federal standard for self-quarantine.Cruz issued the following statement on Sunday:"Last night, I was informed that 10 days ago at CPAC I briefly interacted with an individual who is currently symptomatic and has tested positive for COVID-19. That interaction consisted of a brief conversation and a handshake."I have consulted with medical authorities from the Houston Health Department, the Harris County Public Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Health and Human Services, as well as my personal physician. I have also spoken with Vice President Pence, Leader McConnell, and Mark Meadows."I'm not experiencing any symptoms, and I feel fine and healthy. Given that the interaction was 10 days ago, that the average incubation period is 5-6 days, that the interaction was for less than a minute, and that I have no current symptoms, the medical authorities have advised me that the odds of transmission from the other individual to me were extremely low."The physicians further advised that testing is not effective before symptoms manifest, and my brief interaction with the individual does not meet the CDC criteria for self-quarantine."The medical authorities explicitly advised me that, given the above criteria, the people who have interacted with me in the 10 days since CPAC should not be concerned about potential transmission."Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, and because of how frequently I interact with my constituents as a part of my job and to give everyone peace of mind, I have decided to remain at my home in Texas this week, until a full 14 days have passed since the CPAC interaction."Everyone should continue to treat this outbreak seriously and be driven by facts and medical science. We need to continue to be proactive in mobilizing resources to combat this outbreak-including the .3 billion in emergency funding we provided last week-and I encourage everyone to follow the recommendations of the CDC and other health professionals in protecting their own health and welfare, as well as the health and welfare of those around them." 3022

Research from Washington State University suggests cannabis could be used to relieve headaches, university researchers said in the Journal of Pain.According to the research, inhaled cannabis reduces self-reported headache severity by 47.3% and migraine severity by 49.6%. According to Washington State, the study was the first to use big data from headache and migraine patients using cannabis in real time. “We were motivated to do this study because a substantial number of people say they use cannabis for headache and migraine, but surprisingly few studies had addressed the topic,” said Carrie Cuttler, a Washington State University assistant professor of psychology, the lead author on the paper.Cuttler did caution that there could be a placebo effect, and that further research is needed.“I suspect there are some slight overestimates of effectiveness,” said Cuttler. “My hope is that this research will motivate researchers to take on the difficult work of conducting placebo-controlled trials. In the meantime, this at least gives medical cannabis patients and their doctors a little more information about what they might expect from using cannabis to manage these conditions.”The study also found no significant difference between the effectiveness of THC and CBD, two active ingredients in cannabis. One prior study indicated that cannabis was more effective than ibuprofen in reducing headaches, but that study used nabilone, a synthetic cannabinoid drug. 1480

Short-video social media app TikTok is known for videos of dancing, singing and jokes. The app’s popularity has skyrocketed this year, especially with kids and teens."It’s mostly younger kids,” Kendall Wheeler explained. Wheeler, who has been dancing since she was 3 years old, has more than 440,000 followers on the app. The 17-year-old dancer downloaded the app when she was 15 as a way to share dance — and other — videos. Now, her content has expanded to acting, trends and other topics, and her image is attracting companies looking to sponsor or advertise their products with her.“A lot more companies have been reaching out to me,” she said. “I’ve made a pretty good amount of money from just going live.”Going live on the app and interacting with followers is the easiest way to make money on TikTok, and it allows for direct audience engagement. “My friends are pretty much from TikTok and I FaceTime them all the time,” she explained. “My social circle is on TikTok.”A 991

Spending 340 days aboard the International Space Station between 2015 and 2016 caused changes in astronaut Scott Kelly's body, from his weight down to his genes, according to the results of the NASA Twins Study, released Thursday. The majority of changes that occurred in Kelly's body, compared with his identical brother, Mark, on Earth, returned to normal once he came back from the space station. The study results suggest that human health can be "mostly sustained" for a year in space, the researchers said.On a call with reporters Thursday, Mark thanked Scott for his service to the country and commitment to science by spending a year in space without knowing how it would affect him."I got all the glory, and you got all the work," Scott said, chiding his twin."And I got people coming to my house for tubes of blood," Mark replied in reference to the scientific samples taken during Scott's mission; Scott was collecting the same samples from himself to send back to researchers on Earth. The results show "the resilience and robustness of the human body," said Steven Platts, deputy chief scientist for NASA's Human Research Program, which coordinated the study.Coincidentally, the results are being released just in time for the 58th anniversary of the first manned spaceflight by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. But the much-anticipated study reveals areas that may require countermeasures or safeguards when preparing for longer space missions or missions to deep space, like Mars. The molecular, physiological and behavioral changes were divided into low-, mid-level and high-risk groups. Scott's change in body mass and microbiome were considered low-risk. Shifts in collagen regulation and blood vessel fluid management were mid-level, and genomic instability was regarded as potentially high-risk."When we go into space and experience microgravity and travel at speeds like 17,500 miles an hour, our bodies adapt and continue to function and, by and large, function extremely well," Platts said. The study, which includes the work of 84 scientists who made up 10 teams from 12 universities in eight states, all studying different aspects of the human body in space, was published Thursday in the journal 2227
