With emotions still raw days after a deadly school shooting in Florida, one Ohio family is fighting back against what they think is an unfair punishment.Beth Mertel says one of her son's peers brought a toy gun to Greenbriar Middle School in Parma on Feb. 8, and pointed it at her son, Joey."He says he doesn't want to be the snitch," Mertel said. "They're 11 years old. They're kids. They're trying to find their place with their friends too."Mertel says the Parma City School District suspended the student who brought the toy gun, along with three other students, including Joey, for knowing about it but not telling an adult about it.The district stands behind the discipline, saying the three additional students were punished under a part of the Student Handbook labeled "Withholding Information."Mertel's concern is with the severity of the punishment, not the rule she admits her son should have followed."No matter how much I disagree with the suspension, you still should have said something," said Beth.Mertel says Wednesday's tragedy in Florida is an important teaching moment."I said [to Joey] you need to go home and turn on the news," said Beth. "You need to watch this, you need to understand this."The district tells us that suspension will stay on Joey's internal school record through middle school and into high school. Beth says it's a hefty punishment that falls short of teaching the lesson she says is worth learning."Whenever you see something, you have to tell somebody," said Mertel. "That's the only way this is going to be taken care of." 1605

While Democrats are projected to take control of the US House, the party hoped that a blue wave would include winning a number of major gubernatorial seats. But in two larger states, Republican candidates hung on and won in Florida and Ohio. This came as some polls showed Democrats leading in those states heading into Tuesday's Election Day. In Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis held off Andrew Gillum, the Democrat who is the mayor of Tallahassee. DeSantis held a 1-percent advantage with more than 99 percent reporting. In Ohio, Republican state Attorneys General Mike DeWine defeated Democrat Richard Cordray. Cordray was previously appointed to the Consumer Protection Finance Board by President Barack Obama. DeWine had previously defeated Cordray in 2010 for the state's AG position. In a fierce battle in Georgia, Democrat Stacey Abrams said she is vowing to continue her fight despite trailing Republican Brian Kemp by a 51 to 48 margin late on Tuesday. While most performers have had to shelve public performances during the coronavirus, musician Trey Songz performed at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.According to Trey Songz’s social media accounts, he performed at the Aftermath Nightclub on Saturday.While in normal times, the concert wouldn’t be newsworthy, the performance prompted Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein to order the nightclub temporarily closed, claiming the concert violated state COVID-19 requirements. He issued a restraining order against the club on Tuesday. Klein says the order will be effective until the case goes before a court, which he says could come on December 17.Ohio currently requires people in public indoor spaces to wear masks unless they’re actively eating or drinking. Klein said that the nightclub disregarded the mandate, based on an investigation by the Ohio Investigative Unit. His office estimates that 500 people were attendance at the concert.“Last weekend’s indoor concert at Aftermath was in blatant disregard of COVID-19 health orders and social distancing best practices,” said Klein. “We are in the middle of a surge in coronavirus infections, yet the owners of Aftermath planned to continue hosting large-scale events at their venue, including this upcoming weekend. When you decide to live in the desert, you most likely understand some of your neighbors will be scorpions.But, a Phoenix woman says her apartment complex near is being overrun by scorpions.She asked KNXV to get involved after she said the management of the Banyantree Apartment was not helping. "That's it when it was by the wall," said LaPorsha Jones, as she showed pictures of scorpions on her phone.Jones said she has lived in the complex since April, and has found dozens of scorpions on her own. She even sought out help from pest control workers on the property. She says they told her something shocking."He caught 1,052 [scorpions] and he said, that's not even half of them," Jones said.On top of the scorpions, we noticed more problems all across Jones's apartment.There was what appeared to be black mold in the bathroom, and more in the window sill in the living room. She pointed out brown water leaking from her refrigerator, and told us she got sick from using the tap water to cook. She now uses only bottled water. Jones said she had asked management to fix all of these issues, as well as the scorpions, but nothing has been resolved.So, our reporter walked into the office and asked for the manager.A woman sitting at the front desk went to get her, but about a minute later there was a major change in tone. That same woman told our crew there would be no interview. They gave us a number to call for a comment, but after calling and leaving a voicemail, no one ever returned our calls for answers.So, we took action and went above their head to get help for this woman.
