The Senate has passed a defense spending bill that President Donald Trump has said he plans to veto, according to the Associated Press. The National Defense Authorization Act passed the Senate with a 84 to 13 Friday. The annual bill affirms a 3% pay raise to U.S. troops and unlocks billions in military spending. The bill passed despite an attempt from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, to filibuster the bill and delay its passage. Paul said Thursday he opposed the bill because it limited Trump's ability to withdraw troops from the Middle East before he leaves office.Trump has threatened to veto the bill unless lawmakers include a provision that would remove Section 230 from the 1996 Communications Decency Act. That section protects tech companies from being sued for content that other people post on their website.Conservative lawmakers have attacked the provision in recent years, saying that the protections have led social media conglomerates to develop a liberal bias on the social media sites. Proponents of the provision say it upholds free-market values in the marketplace of information.Congress is expected to override a potential veto from Trump. The House of Representatives easily passed the bill earlier this month with a vote of 335-78. 1260

The White House announced Friday that President Donald Trump intends to appoint Mehmet Oz, better known as Dr. Oz, to his council on sport, fitness and nutrition.Oz is well-known as a host of an eponymous television show on health and medical issues and, before that, for appearances on "The Oprah Winfey Show." But he has become a lightning rod for controversy for featuring what critics say is unscientific advice on his show.In 2015, a group of doctors criticized him harshly, saying he manifested "an egregious lack of integrity" in his TV and promotional work and called his faculty position at Columbia University unacceptable.Oz defended himself in a written statement at the time, saying, "I bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves. We provide multiple points of view, including mine which is offered without conflict of interest."The-CNN-Wire 906

The red carpet, the stars, the fashion, the acceptance speeches. It's all going down at the 90th Academy Awards. Here's what you need to know about the ceremony:Who's hosting the Academy Awards?Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel will (hopefully) bring the funny again, just as he did at last year's ceremony.Given his more politically-charged monologues recently on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," there are sure to be some Trump jokes -- and disses.Related: Jimmy Kimmel brings new political profile to Oscar-host roleWhat's different about the Oscars this year? The action kicks off a half hour earlier this year, starting at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST on ABC.Viewers will just have to wait and see if that extra time will translate into longer speeches by the winners. What will people be talking about on the Oscars red carpet? That could be tricky this year because E! host Ryan Seacrest is set to have his usual red carpet hosting duties.Seacrest has been defending himself against an allegation of sexual misconduct. Though Seacrest was cleared of any wrongdoing by the network after a third-party investigation, strong support for the #MeToo movement and the Time's Up campaign might make for some awkward encounters.Related: Ryan Seacrest's Oscar night could prove complicatedWho's presenting the Oscars? The list is pretty impressive and includes Sandra Bullock, Emily Blunt, Dave Chappelle, Jodie Foster, Eiza González, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey and Christopher Walken, among others.Oscar-winner Lupita N'yongo, one of the stars of what is arguably the biggest film currently in theaters, "Black Panther," will also present.Who will win the Oscars? That is the question of the evening. While there are some frontrunners in the acting categories, the best picture Oscar is up for grabs.Related: Oscar nominations 2018 - The full listOne thing we do know is that safeguards have now been put in place to ensure there won't be another envelope mix-up."La La Land" was mistakenly named best picture last year, when the winner was in fact "Moonlight."Related: Remembering the 'Moonlight' and 'La La Land' Oscars fiascoWhere to watch the Academy Awards?ABC will begin its live coverage of the red carpet at 6:30 p.m. EST, available on broadcast platforms and live-streaming on ABC.com or the ABC app.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. The Wisconsin Supreme Court said Thursday it will not hear President Donald Trump's lawsuit, which had been requested to overturn election results in two Wisconsin counties. The lawsuit sought to overturn 200,000 ballots in Wisconsin. The decision from the Supreme Court comes just days after the Wisconsin Election Commission officially declared Joe Biden as the winner of Wisconsin."What we had is an abuse of the absentee process, dramatically in Dane and Milwaukee County,” said Jim Troupis, attorney for the Trump campaign. The lawsuit specifically focused on absentee ballots that were cast both through the mail and in person. The suit aimed to dismiss absentee ballots where the clerks' offices "inserted missing information,” people cast ballots "claiming Indefinite Confinement status" even if they "no longer qualified,” and absentee ballots "improperly cast or received at ‘Democracy in the Park’ events,” which were held in Madison.Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Election Commission have said the Trump Administration is required to file the lawsuit in circuit court, not the state Supreme Court. This story was originally published by Julia Marshall at WTMJ. 1183
