SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A young sea otter who was found stranded on a beach and deemed non-releasable has been given a new name. SeaWorld San Diego took in "Nova" the sea otter in March, where she has been thriving with other sea otters in the park's Otter Outlook habitat.Nova was found abandoned without a mother on a beach in Cambria, Calif., in March 2018. Monterey Bay Aquarium took her in and provided her care. There, she was also paired with an adult female otter to act as a surrogate mother.When the aquarium released her back into the wild about a year later, she was rescued once again and deemed non-releasable by the US Fish and Wildlife. Eventually, Nova was taken to SeaWorld, which is one of the few California facilities that rehabilitates and cares for southern otters. While the park is currently closed due to the coronavirus, SeaWorld says it intends to reopen on July 1 with new health guidance. 921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Accusations of altering documents to receive federal money. That’s the claim in court records against Argosy University, which operates The Art Institute of California in San Diego. Court documents accuse the university of charges including changing submissions to the Department of Education to get student financial funds. Argosy University operates more than a dozen locations across the country, including the Art Institute of California in Mission Valley. The Department of Education sent millions of dollars to Argosy. RELATED: Students concerned for future of Art Institute of California - San DiegoWhat it didn’t know and what’s alleged in court documents is the university was using the money that was supposed to go to students to pay for things like operating expenses. The filing was made on behalf of a court-appointed receiver, the independent outside party to handle the university’s finances. 10News reported earlier that the Education Department stopped all financial aid to Argosy. In July of 2018, the Art Institute in Mission Valley stopped enrolling new students. Current students say they’re frustrated and nervous. 10News reached out to Argosy’s parent company for a response but hasn’t heard back. 1250

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A special ceremony was held at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton on Friday, honoring missing in action (MIA) service members and prisoners of war (POA). Loved ones, veterans, and active duty service members gathered at the base, participating in a moment of silence and watching as a wreath was laid in honor of the missing. "I had a father-in-law, Ernesto Castillo, captured by the Japanese in 1942," said Vicki Miller, who works at the Naval Hospital.For 26 years Miller made it her mission to honor service members like her father-in-law, organizing the ceremony each year on National POW/MIA Recognition Day."They were very cruel, they took out his teeth, pulled his fingernails and toenails out, starved him, made him walk that 76-mile walk on Baaton Death March," said Miller. Miller says while her father-in-law survived, he lived the rest of his life with guilt. She adds that families still waiting for answers endure another type of torture. "Keep praying for those families that are still waiting and wondering for answers," said Miller. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Escondido man who pleaded guilty to firing several rounds into the air in a crowded area when he couldn't get tickets to an Ice Cube concert was sentenced to three years behind bars Wednesday. Daniel Elizarraras, 22, pleaded guilty to discharging a gun at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in early September of 2018. Authorities say Elizarraras raised the gun before shooting into the air while he was in a large crowd near the ticket booth. Elizarraras was shot three times in the torso and once in the arm after he pointed the gun at a deputy. RELATED: Man admits he opened fire before Ice Cube concert at Del Mar FairgroundsElizarraras was facing up to 19 years behind bars, but a charge of assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic weapon was dismissed as part of his plea. Defense Attorney Pedro Bernal said Elizarraras was severely depressed and trying to kill himself by suicide by cop. They asked for a lower sentence.However, the prosecution said he acted violently, causing chaos, and the situation could have been much worse.Judge Kathleen Lewis agreed saying, "I think it’s amazing that no one was injured or killed in this circumstance.”Before the shooting, officials said the venue was at capacity and began turning people away from the horse races and concert. Fights erupted between security guards and would-be concert-goers who were upset that they wouldn’t be allowed into the show.
