SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Violence has been a part of our world since biblical days. I had been with 10News just a couple of months when one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history unfolded close to our border. We begin with that monstrous act.One scene always comes to mind from July 18th, 1984; the day of the McDonald's Massacre in San Ysidro. The body of 12 year old Omarr Hernandez, lying alongside his bicycle on the sidewalk of the fast-food restaurant. James Huberty told his wife he was going out "to hunt humans" that day. He took the lives of 21. A SWAT team sniper ended the seige by killing Huberty. The next day, Omarr's family invited us into their home to share their grief. It was overwhelming.Co-ed Cara Knott was murdered just after Christmas, 1986. Beaten with a flashlight, strangled, and thrown off a bridge alongside I-15 by a California State Trooper on patrol. Craig Peyer has made it a habit to pull over young women at night and direct them down a closed, unfinished exit ramp. He'd try to chat them up. Cara had recently taken a self-defense course and may have scratched at Peyer the night she was trapped in the darkness...and he killed her. Dozens of women told authorities they had been similarly stopped, plus there was blood and fibre evidence--threads from a rare CHP uniform patch were on her clothes. The jury voted guilty. Peyer is serving a life sentence. Cara's dad died pulling weeds from the memorial garden near where she was found. I've seen the rest of the family become closer as time passed..Stephanie Crowe was 12 when she was stabbed to death in her bedroom in 1998. Initially her 14 year old brother and two of his friends were suspects; and two of the boys confessed, including Michael Crowe. Those confessions were later deemed inadmissible; that the police interrogation was flawed. The boys were released and a transient in the rural Escondido neighborhood that night was arrested and brought to trial. There were smudges of Stephanie's blood on Richard Tuite's long-sleeved t-shirt. He escaped custody briefly during the trial but was quickly re-captured. Eventually convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the verdict was overturned on appeal. Tried a second time, a different jury considered that there was no DNA, no fingerprints, no physical proof that Tuite had entered the house; that perhaps the blood stains were due to cross contamination. He was found not guilty. The Crowe family has struggled with their grief for many years.7-year-old Danielle van Dam was stolen from her home in Sabre Springs in February, 2002. Missing for nearly a month, her body was discovered under a tree in a rural area more than 20 miles away. A 49-year-old neighbor, David Westerfield, quickly came under suspicion and was arrested on kidnapping charges after her handprint and traces of her blood were found in his motor home.Westerfield was convicted and sentenced to death. He's been on death row at San Quentin for 16 years. Brenda van Dam became an advocate for victim's rights.Chelsea King was running on a trail outside Rancho Bernardo in 2010; attacked and killed by an emotionally disturbed stranger, John Gardner He avoided the death penalty by admitting to the rape and murder of another teenager the year before, Amber DuBois... and leading police to her grave on a hillside near the Pala Indian Reservation. The Kings started a foundation that touched thousands.James Holmes dressed in tactical clothing and fired off multiple rounds into a crowded Aurora, Colorado movie theatre in 2012. It was during a midnight showing of that year's Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Holmes, from Rancho Penasquitos, killed 12 and wounded 58 others before running out to his car where he was taken down and cuffed. He'd also rigged his apartment with homemade bombs to continue the killing spree but the booby trap was defused without injury. An insanity plea was rejected and Holmes was convicted and sentenced to 12 life terms plus over 3300 years in prison. 4009

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - With just three weeks to go, the Veterans Village of San Diego says they're about 0,000 short on cash donations for this year's "Stand Down" event.Stand Down, now in its 32nd year, is a weekend-long event that helps homeless veterans connect to all the services they need to get off the streets.Program Director Darcy Pavich says people and companies across San Diego typically donate about 0,000 worth of in-kind donations and 0,000 in cash each year. While the in-kind contributions are on track, the cash is short. Pavich says that means they won't be able to buy a lot of the items that can't be donated."What we won't have is things like the tables and chairs, cots to sleep on, some the structure that we build that we have to purchase," she says.Around 800 homeless veterans go to the Stand Down event each year. Marine Corps Veteran Ritesh Kumar Patel says it was the difference between him living on the streets and getting his life back together."It was mind-blowing," he says of the amount of help he got. "I was on the verge of dying, and I didn't realize it, and I didn't know, and I didn't know there was help out there."Patel has been living at the Veterans Village for three years now. He's recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and PTSD. He's also studying for a bachelor's degree in business.He says Stand Down made it all possible."I've seen the benefits that you can get by just being willing to listen," says Patel. "My life has changed."Pavich says she believes donations are down because the event has been moved to earlier in the year. Traditionally, it has been held on the same weekend as Comic-Con in late July. Last year, the VVSD moved it to late June. Pavich thinks people who wait until the last minute to send donations don't know about the earlier date."Stand Down is the in-road to saving lives," she says. "When we can offer someone their life back, you can't put a dollar value on that. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two thieves prowled an entire neighborhood in Oak Park looking for something very specific on the vehicles.Along Blackton Drive, the sense of safety is shattered for David Cabrera.  Late Wednesday morning, Cabrera and his wife returned home to a neighbor telling them to check their license plate.  He discovered the registration sticker on his truck stolen. He had sliced his sticker into eight different sections as a precaution but it didn't help.Cabrera's surveillance cameras revealed the thieves:  a man and a woman walking together. A tree obscures the camera's view, but a woman can be seen behind Cabrera's truck, while the man stands and looks around.  The woman gets up and the two walk off.Seconds later, a neighbor saw the same woman peeling off a sticker from another car and the neighbor ran out of her kitchen to confront her.  That neighbor told the woman to put it back.  The woman got verbally aggressive but did put the sticker back.Neighbors called 911 but the thieves took off.  After Cabrera posted details on the Nextdoor app, five other neighbors reported also getting hit that morning."It's a feeling of violation. You want to feel safe in your own neighborhood," said Cabrera. 1275

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the announcement that San Diego Unified School District is beginning their school year online, some parents are looking at other options.Patrick Batten has four children. He said his incoming high school senior did well with distance learning in the Poway Unified School District, but it was a struggle for his 12-year-old.“It was not a platform that she adapted to,” Batten said.Batten and his wife both work full-time. Right now, Poway Unified is offering choices. In a letter to parents, the reopening plans include two options: a “return to on campus learning (with some online options) or participate in [the] Virtual Learning Academy.” Batten knows those options could change as the beginning of the school year gets closer. If some type of on-campus learning is off the table, they may look outside the district.“We’re exploring the option of private school and how do we financially afford that,” Batten said. He said he would also look to a district that does offer in-person instruction.“I’m strongly hoping that they stick with their original plan and they give the option for teachers to be able to teach in person if they’re comfortable with it, as well as if a teacher isn’t, that they have the option to teach online and give the same opportunity for parents,” Batten said.John Anderson’s two children are in the San Diego Unified School District. Monday, the school district announced it is “committed to the beginning of the school year online.”“I think the online experience in the spring was okay, but to do it for potentially a whole semester or a whole year, I think is going to be a pretty big struggle for the kids,” Anderson said. Like Batten, he has had discussions with his wife about options outside the district if some type of in-person instruction is not available.Some homeschool options have seen increased interest since the pandemic began. Sage Oak Charter School is an independent studies program that operates in several counties including San Diego. Student services coordinator Chelsey Anema said the number of inquiries to the school has increased “extreme numbers.”“Our normal family that enrolls is a family who, they just are passionate about homeschooling. Now, I think a lot of families are enrolling who are wanting out of the traditional brick and mortar school because they don’t want what they had in the spring,” Anema said.South Bay mom Elisa Hilliard homeschools her three daughters and shares her experience through her social media channels as “San Diego Homeschool Mom.” Hilliard has advice for parents looking to homeschool their own kids.“Things are going to be different and they’re not always going to be easy. You have to be ready for change,” she said. “It [also] really depends what your schedule is like, how flexible your hours are, can you build a schedule with your family.”The San Diego Unified School District will give parents another update on August 10th. When asked about enrollment numbers, a SDUSD spokesperson said that data is not available until a few weeks after the school year starts. 3096
