UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on the international community to continue to strengthen multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation within the UN framework.     China's UN Ambassador Zhang Yesui made the appeal at the thematic debate of the UN Security Council on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorists.     "Recently, a series of alarming acts of terror occurred in such places as Mumbai, resulting in heavy casualties of innocent people. The Chinese delegation expresses its deep condolences to the victims," Zhang told the council.     "These cruel realities remind us once again that terrorism still remains a potent threat to peace and security of international community," he said.     The Security Council, as the core of the international collective security machinery, should play an important role in international fight against terrorism, he said.     "Terrorism is the common threat facing the international community and it is imperative to continue to step up the multilateral counter terrorism cooperation within the UN framework," he said.     China believes that all UN bodies should pay attention to both stepping up counter-terrorism measures and removing the root causes that give rise to terrorism, he said.     "The member states are the real owners in the implementation of all UN counter-terrorism resolutions," the Chinese envoy said. "Their will and capacity in counter-terrorism determines the implementation of those resolutions."     "However, limited resources and inadequate counter-terrorism capacities have led to the inability of many countries, especially the developing countries to honor fully their counter-terrorism obligations, and thus limited seriously the international community's achievements in the struggle against terrorism," he stressed.     China hopes that the international community will pay greater attention to the capacity-building in counter-terrorism and invest more resources to help the developing countries with counter-terrorism assistance that meets their actual needs and help them improve expeditiously capabilities so that the effective implementation of all UN counter-terrorism resolutions will have a firm basis, he added.

BERN, Switzerland, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland decided on Tuesday to begin a joint feasibility study on creating a bilateral free trade zone in the second half of this year in preparation for formally launching negotiations on the issue.     During talks in the Swiss capital, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and President of the Swiss Confederation Hans-Rudolf Merz exchanged views on the current international financial and economic situation and briefed each other on the policies and measures China and Switzerland have taken regarding the international financial crisis. BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese infants might have died from consuming melamine-tainted milk powder, the country's Ministry of Health (MOH) said here on Monday.     Experts with the MOH and provincial health departments had looked into 11 infant death cases since September across the country, and had ruled out connection to the tainted milk powder in five cases, the ministry said on its website.     They could not, however, rule out such possibility in the rest six cases, it said.     Four of the six cases occured in Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Guizhou and Shaanxi Provinces respectively, while the rest two cases occurred in the northwestern province of Gansu.     It did not give any further details.     Previous reports said three babies, including two in Gansu Province and one in Zhejiang Province, had already been confirmed by the ministry to have died from consuming the tainted milk from May to August.     The ministry did not make it clear whether the three confirmed cases were included in the six undecided case.     Meanwhile, 861 infants were still receiving treatment for kidney problems caused by tainted milk powder by last Thursday, the ministry said.     The figure dropped by about 200 from the previous week, when the number of hospitalized infants stood at 1,041.     All together 294,000 infants were found to have suffered from diseases of urinary systems in the ministry's nationwide screening, it said.     Among them, 154 had been in serious conditions, but were all stable by Monday. A total of 51,900 children had been hospitalized and 51,039 had recovered and left the hospital.     Most of the sick children were found to have only sand-like stones in their urinary systems.

BEIJING, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- In December 2008, China's light industry enjoyed an output growth of 8.1 percent year-on-year, which sharply outpaced the 4.7 percent growth of heavy industry.     The latest statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics show that the output of state-owned enterprises suffered a decline. In December, state-owned and state-controlled enterprises witnessed an output drop of 0.6 percent, while that of private enterprises went up 16.3 percent, overseas-funded enterprises was up 0.3 percent.     According to the statistics, in December the country produced 219.9 million tonnes of coal, down 1.3 percent year-on-year; the output of crude oil was 15.7 million tonnes, up 0.4 percent; crude steel fell 10.5 percent to 37.79 million tonnes; and motor vehicles dropped 18.9 percent to 685,700 sets.     In December, China's industrial output grew 5.7 percent, or 0.3percentage points faster than the previous month.
