CANBERRA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The relationship between China and Australia is expected to be further boosted with over 20 documents of cooperation signed during the visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Australia's media reported on Monday."The high-level visit of Xi and hundreds of aides has made it clear how keen the two countries are to do business," the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported after the announcement of the deal in Canberra on Monday.According to AAP, Chinese companies will build mines, railways and port facilities in Australia under a series of deals.The new agreements are not only in the resources and energy sectors, but also include telecommunications, education and a quarantine protocol for exporting Tasmanian apples to China.Under one deal, Chinese companies will help fund an 8-billion-U. S.-dollar coal mine, railway and coal-loading terminal near Bowen in Queensland.The deal would yield 4 billion Australian dollars (3.53 billion U.S. dollars) in exports each year for 25 years, Rudd said.
BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- China will hold a series of activities under the title of "Chinese Culture Year" in Italy this year in a bid to advance bilateral exchanges and cooperation, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said here Thursday.Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said the cultural activities are to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Italy.Liu, also secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPC, made the remarks when meeting with Massimo D'Alema, president of the Italianieuropei Foundation and former prime minister of Italy.Liu said, the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership was in good shape, citing frequent high-level exchange, enhanced political mutual trust and expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation.Trade between China and Italy had continued to grow over the years, as each side had benefitted greatly from cooperation in science, technology, environment protection, culture, education and agriculture, he said.Liu said to celebrate 40 years of official ties this year, the countries should advance cooperation and exchanges in the areas of trade, economy, science, technology, education and tourism.D'Alema expressed the wish to further expand Italy-China cooperation in all fields.

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. "Bangladesh always regards China as an important strategic partner," she said.Talking with Bangladeshi Parliament Speaker Abdul Hamid, Xi spoke highly of the comprehensive development of bilateral relations since both countries established diplomatic relations 35 years ago.He reiterated China's commitment to work with Bangladesh to push forward their comprehensive partnership of cooperation. BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Monday urged concrete measures be taken to protect the ecological environment while building to improve living conditions as part of the country's campaign to develop its vast western regions.Hui made his remarks at the opening ceremony of the achievements exhibition displaying the western regions' environmental protection and construction accomplishments during the "West Development" campaign.The Chinese government launched the "West Development" campaign ten years ago as part of a program to narrow the gap between the country's coastal eastern region and the underdeveloped west.Statistics indicate that forest coverage has increased in the west from 10.32 percent to 17.05 percent over the past decade thanks to west regions' efforts in natural forests preservation, forestry restoration and reducing the impact of desertification.Hui called on local governments in the western regions to more effectively implement the central government's policies and decisions at the recent work meeting on West Development held on July 5 and 6.The western regions should also do its share to maintain the country's ecological security, Hui said.
XIAMEN, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have come closer to signing a comprehensive economic pact as "substantial progress" has been made in negotiations, the mainland's chief Taiwan affairs official said on Sunday.Speaking at a centerpiece conference of the week-long Straits Forum held in the southeastern city of Xiamen, Director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, Wang Yi, said the progress in talks on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a result of joint endeavors and shall be honored by both sides.The two sides discussed the main contents of the pact and items of the goods and services to be included in the "early harvest program" at the third round of expert-level talks in Beijing last week.The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) represented both sides during the negotiations. Two previous talks were held in Beijing and Taipei earlier this year.The ECFA is intended to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, the pact's initiators said. Its "early harvest program" will cover certain industries to first benefit from tariff reductions.
