PETERSBURG, Russia, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here on Monday that Russia is a vital market for the "going global" strategy of Chinese enterprises, and expressed hope that mutually-beneficial economic cooperation could help consolidate bilateral ties and strategic partnership."Chinese enterprises should step up efforts to go global ... and Russia is a vital market for the implementation of our 'going global' strategy," said Xi while inspecting a Sino-Russian joint project, the Baltic Pearl, in Russia's northern metropolis St. Petersburg.With a total investment of over 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, the large commercial, real estate and tourism project involved several leading enterprises from east China's Shanghai Municipality, the St. Petersburg municipal government and the Export-Import Bank of China. KUNMING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for more efforts to fight Yunnan's worst drought in 60 years when visiting the province in southwestern China.He urged local authorities to ensure water supply for urban and rural residents and for agricultural uses.He also asked local authorities to take more measures to limit the spread of forest fires.Hui visited several rural households to know if they had enough water. He also inspected affected crops, reservoirs and forests during his visit to Yunnan from Wednesday to Friday.Yunnan's drought has resulted in water shortages for locals, livestock and crops.The dry spell started in the autumn 2009 and has also hit neighboring Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said late Friday in a statement on its website.The ministry urged all affected regions to "take all possible means" to minimize the damages of the drought.The ministry also asked local civil affairs authorities of the four hardest-hit regions to report, on a 10-day basis, the number of people affected by the drought, people suffering from drinking water shortage, and people in need of government aid.

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of China (BOC) plans to issue new Hong Kong-listed H shares, about 20 percent of its current H shares, as soon as possible, said BOC Board Chairman Xiao Gang Thursday.But the BOC had to wait for approvals from shareholders and securities regulators on the mainland and in Hong Kong, Xiao said.The BOC, China's third largest bank by market value, in January declared it would sell no more than 40 billion yuan (5.86 billion U.S. dollars) of bonds convertible to A shares to improve capital adequacy.The BOC currently had no acquisition plans in China or overseas, Xiao said.The biggest credit risks lied in the local governments' financing units and the BOC was tightening loans to these units, he said.

BEIJING, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has commended the heroic deeds of a special policeman, who died on duty at the age of 28, and asked the country to build a special police team with high fighting capacity.Hu made the call in a written instruction to a meeting on Tuesday honoring Shen Zhandong, a special policeman from Zhengzhou, of the central Henan Province.Shen was known for his outstanding performance in many missions, including the rescue work after the deadly Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan Province and the security work for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.Shen died on Jan. 30, the day of his 28th birthday. Medical diagnose suggested that overwork had taken a heavy toll on Shen and caused his sudden death.At Tuesday's meeting, Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, called on the country's police to learn from Shen.Zhou urged the police to step up efforts to resolve social conflicts, improve social management and enforce the law in a just and clean manner.
