BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- China should steadily promote the internationalization of its currency, the yuan, the head of China's social security fund said Saturday.The internationalization of the yuan is a significant step for advancing the reform of the international monetary system, Dai Xianglong, chairman of China's National Council for Social Security Funds, said when speaking at annual economic forum in Beijing.The current international monetary system has not adapted to the new patterns of global economic development, he said, adding that currency diversification is a realistic solution.Currency diversification means continuing the role of dollar, increasing the role of the euro and internationalizing other currencies, he said.The U.S. dollar, serving as both the U.S. currency and the most important international currency, will be used for U.S. policy goals when the two roles contradict each other, spurring fluctuations in global financial markets, he said, adding that the dollar has a tendency to depreciate.He said the Chinese yuan is a stable currency, and so ensures the safety of other countries' assets.The Chinese currency also enhances world trade, protecting the interests of China's foreign trade and investment, he added.The internationalization of the yuan will take 15 to 20 years, he said, suggesting an expansion of the overseas circulation of the yuan and an acceleration in the opening-up of China's large commercial banks to speed up the process.He urged Chinese banks in foreign countries to offer funding in yuan.He also called for more efforts to reform the interest rate mechanism, to ease the process of the internationalization of the yuan.

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Japan Friday for the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), which is slated for Saturday and Sunday in Yokohama.Hu and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by senior officials from the Japanese Foreign Ministry at Haneda airport.Chief Executive Donald Tsang of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua were also present at the airport to greet Hu.President Hu, who flew into Tokyo from Seoul after attending the fifth summit of the Group of 20 (G20), was traveling by car to Yokohama.With the theme of "Change and Action," this year's Economic Leaders' Meeting will focus on the regional economic integration, a growth strategy for the Asia-Pacific region, human security, the economic and technical cooperation, and the assessment of achievement of Bogor Goals by APEC economies, according to the meeting agenda.The Bogor Goals call for free and open trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific by 2010 for industrialized economies and by 2020 for developing economies. ZHENGZHOU, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese court Wednesday upheld the death sentences with two year reprieves given to two mine bosses found responsible for a gas explosion that killed 76 people at a central China coal mine last year.The sentences were the first time mine bosses in China held responsible for a fatal accident were given the death penalty.The provincial high court in Henan Province rejected the appeals of Li Xinjun, former head of the No. 4 coal mine in the Xinhua District of Pingdingshan City, and Han Erjun, former deputy head of the mine.The court also rejected appeals filed by three other managers of the mine who were sentenced to 13 years, 15 years and life imprisonment respectively.The Intermediate Court of Pingdingshan City sentenced the five mine bosses on November 16 for neglecting safety procedures and forcing miners to work underground despite knowing the mine lacked adequate safety measures.The blast ripped through the No. 4 mine in Pingdingshan City on September 8, 2009, as 93 miners worked underground, killing 76 and injuring 15 others.The mine was under technological renovation at the time of the blast and did not have a safe production license, the court has found.China's coal mines are notorious for deadly accidents. More than 2,600 miners were killed in mine accidents in China last year, a number significantly less than in previous years.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. BEIJING, Nov. 19 (Xinhuanet) --Chinese companies Thursday denied allegations by a Zimbabwe trade union that said Chinese construction firms had violated labor laws there by underpaying and abusing local staff.Ge Yizhong, deputy general manager of Zim Nantong Construction, which is currently operating in Zimbabwe, told the Global Times that local workers his company had hired were satisfied with their working conditions, including salaries."There is no ill-treatment of workers at my company. We have provided protective clothing to local workers and pay them according to the regulations set out by the local trade union," he said. "We have adjusted working hours to meet workers' demands.
