(KGTV) — The number of troops stationed at the U.S.-Mexico border will decrease from 5,600 to about 4,000 troops and their deployment will be extended into January, according to the Associated Press.The AP, citing U.S. officials speaking on the condition of anonymity, said a formal request submitted by the Department of Homeland Security Friday requested the additional support. The request has yet to be approved by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, though military officials have been working with DHS to help develop the request, the AP reports.Troops were deployed by President Donald Trump in response to a migrant caravan from Central America. (KGTV) — Ventura Police have arrested a suspect wanted for killing a 55-year-old man in the Midway District on Thanksgiving Day.Forrest Robert Brantley, 38, was taken into custody in Ventura, police announced Wednesday, one day after San Diego Police released his photo to the public.On Nov. 28, SDPD says they received a call about a man who was severely injured in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard. Officer arrived to find Robert Frank Erbe with severe trauma to his neck.RELATED: Police identify man killed in Midway District stabbingMan stabbed to death in Midway District shopping centerErbe was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries. (KGTV) — Starting next year, military veterans will not have to pay adoption fees at California animal shelters, according to a new law.Senate Bill 245, introduced by Senator Ling Ling Chang, was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, Chang's office said Friday. The bill calls on the state's animal shelters to waive adoption fees for military veterans. “This is a big win for veterans and shelter animals,” said Chang. “Our brave heroes deserve the same happiness, and I’m glad we can reduce the barriers for bringing together veterans seeking companion animals and pets in need of a home.”Under the law, shelters will confirm a veteran's eligibility using California's current "veteran" driver's license designation.SB 245 goes into effect Jan. 1, 2020.Chang's office touts the measure will greatly impact the state's two million veterans, some of who struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and would benefit from having an animal companion.“As the saying goes, a dog is a ‘man’s best friend.’ When I’m home my four-legged companions are a part of my family. Authorities are looking into whether Jingjing knew the couple with whom she left.Jingjing, who is 4 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 90 pounds, was last seen with her tour group at about 8:15 a.m. on Thursday.She is believed to have left the airport "without force" with an unknown woman, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Chief David Huchler said late Thursday. Jingjing was in possession of her passport at the time.Airport surveillance video shows the woman helping the girl put on some clothing, and when they left together, the 12-year-old was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a black jacket.Huchler said Jingjing and the woman got into a white, late-model Infinity QX60 with unknown New York tags. The vehicle was being driven by an unknown man.
