Tinder's parent company Match Group is suing competitor Bumble, accusing the female-friendly dating app of patent infringement and stealing trade secrets.The lawsuit, filed Friday in Texas, says Bumble is virtually identical to Tinder, the app that popularized the swipe right to like, swipe left to dislike functionality.Bumble copied the "world-changing, card swipe-based, mutual opt-in premise" of Tinder, the lawsuit says.The complaint also says that Bumble's co-creators are ex-Tinder employees, and the app has rolled out two new features that were "learned of and developed confidentially while at Tinder."Bumble has become a fierce competitor to Tinder since it launched in 2014. Bumble's differentiating factor is that only women can make the first move. But Match confirmed last month it plans to launch that feature in its own app.In the complaint, Match says it "applauds Bumble's efforts at empowering women, both in its app and offline" and "cares deeply both about its women users and about women's issues generally.""This case is simply about forcing Bumble to stop competing with Match and Tinder using Match's own inventions, patented designs, trademarks, and trade secrets," it says.The lawsuit is the first time that Match Group, which also owns dating sites Plenty of Fish and Match.com, has enforced the patents it secured on swiping and double opt-ins for dating matches on Tinder, according to a company spokesperson.Tinder and Bumble have had a complicated history.Bumble was launched by Whitney Wolfe Herd, an early employee at Tinder.Wolfe Herd left Tinder in 2014 after alleging sexual harassment and discrimination. The case was eventually settled. Ex-Tinder employees Chris Gulczynski and Sarah Mick joined Herd to start Bumble more than three years ago. Gulczynski and Mick, who are designers, are at the center of the stolen secret allegations in the suit.The two had knowledge of an "undo" button talked about at Tinder, according to the complaint. That feature was "nearly, if not literally, identical" to Bumble's backtrack feature, the lawsuit says. The backtrack feature allows users to go back in time to "like" someone they may have accidentally passed on.Gulczynski and Mick also helped implement photo messaging at Bumble, something Gulczynski had allegedly mocked up a design for while at Tinder.In a statement, a Match Group spokesperson said the company is "committed to protecting the intellectual property and proprietary data that defines our business,"Bumble did not immediately respond to request for comment. According to the Linkedin accounts for Gulczynski and Mick, both have left Bumble. However, despite putting in the extra work, 6 in 10 workers say they're making the same amount of money they were a year ago.“Despite the best economy we've seen in about a dozen years and the tightest labor market we've seen in almost 50 years, pay raises and better paying jobs are still the exception rather than the rule,” says Greg McBride, with Bankrate.com.Employers are also becoming more selective in how they give out raises, with more companies turning solely to performance-based salary increases.“There's less emphasis on this cost of living, this across the board peanut butter raise that everybody gets,” McBride says. “I think the other element here to is rising benefit costs. A lot of people are getting their raise in the form of the employer absorbing higher benefit costs.”McBride says people with low incomes have the highest chances of not receiving a raise or a better paying job because they generally don't have the advanced skills companies are looking for. Baby Boomers are also not likely to receive a raise because they've often reached their highest income potential within the company.Daniel Swart is a government consultant and one of those workers who did not get a pay raise this year.“It's pretty frustrating,” he says. “When you put in your time and you think you're progressing and your skills are progressing, but your salary is not matching up with those skill progressions.”One of his resolutions for the New Year is to find a new job.“You're almost in a position where the only way to get an increase in your salary is to look for another job,” Swart says.Experts say that can be the smartest plan.“If your current employer is not going to pay you what you feel your market rate is, look elsewhere and see if one of the competitors in the marketplace will,” McBride says. “This is an extremely tight labor market and particularly competitive in certain areas.” 1995
There's a new way to do contact tracing in the works and it could make a difference for health care providers during flu season.Vibrent Health just got a contract with major health institutions to develop the platform.Part of the idea is for users to enter their symptoms and find out if they're more likely to have the flu or COVID-19.“Health care facilities do get bombarded with perhaps people thinking that they have COVID when they just had flu, so the idea is how do you help the health care organizations to reduce some of the burden,” said Praduman Jain, founder and CEO of Vibrent Health.The technology is designed to be embedded in other apps that organizations and intuitions already use, like a university application for students.“So, make it easy for people and don't try to change their behavior,” said Jain. “They are already using certain applications that this can become a part of.”The app uses Wi-Fi networks to find out if you may have been close to someone with the virus.It could help cut some contact tracing work for public health departments. Instead of calling everyone that may have come in contact with the virus, the app can report that information.“There are only so many people, so many human beings, so many people that public health departments can hire to do that contact tracing, so technology becomes really important,” said Jain.Development is still in its early stages. Right now, the focus is on fine-tuning the algorithms to evolve along with changing data on the coronavirus.Broader testing is expected in the first few months of 2021. 1585
This year, the number of women in charge of Fortune 500 companies hit a new a record, but out of the 37 women on that list, none of them are Latina.Leaders around the country are working to change that.Tanya Ramos is the CEO at Pencils of Promise, a group working to help 100,000 children around the world receive an education.Ramos says that because we don't see many Latinas in leadership roles, it's important to seek out mentors.“I’ve had the great fortune of having remarkable mentors throughout my career and I deem my success based on how many others, others like me, other Latinas, that I’m also able to bring up through the ranks and make room at the table for,” said Ramos.Ramos recognizes it could be intimidating to ask someone to be a mentor, but she says it's unlikely someone will say no.“If you encounter someone that you really believe could provide you with valuable advice, or if they can help you think through challenges, seek them out and ask if they would be willing to chat over the phone, or grab a coffee, when it's safe to do that of course,” said Ramos.A survey by Catalyst, a nonprofit that supports creating workplaces for women, found more than 40% of Latinas don't have a mentor. More than a third lack networks. Less than a third don't have role models who are of the same race or ethnic group. 1335
