Over the past month, Eric Janota’s garage has become a workshop.“Me personally, I've built around 25 desks,” he said.These desks are for kids who don't have them, kids who have been spending time doing school from home due to the pandemic.“We found out there was a huge need for them,” said Kim Gonsalves.Together, Gonsalves and Janota started Desks for Kids, their way of helping kids in need who are learning from home.“We first heard about it because Eric’s brother lives in Maryland, and we found out about Desks by Dads because his brother started building with Desks by Dads,” Gonsalves said.The Desks by Dads idea has inspired people across the U.S.“It’s like a group in Michigan, a group over her in another state that’s building desks, and it started with Desks by Dads and a lot of them reference Desks by Dads,” Gonsalves said.“I thought, I can build a dozen desks that seems a reasonable amount of time, effort and money. And I got into it and we started looking at the need and more than 200 desks were needed just for our little suburb,” Janota explained.So, they got to work.“We started just using our own money, just buying up some plywood and supplies and now it’s sort of grown a little bit,” Gonsalves said.With the help of monetary donations, wood donations, and others offering to build desks, they are now working with schools to deliver desks to those who need them most.“They're doing their distance learning all day long on the bed or on the floor,” Gonsalves said.Back at the beginning of the school year, when it became clear many students who went home in the spring still would not go back to face-to-face learning, economists saw kid desks and other supplies go out of stock. Now, as a second wave of COVID-19 sends students home again, the need is still great.“What we saw with desks was the same thing we saw with many other things,” said Mac Clouse, an economist and professor at the University of Denver. “The pandemic has created new markets for just more existing products that become more important in a pandemic.”Clouse said desks are a great example of people finding ways to fill supply needs when there’s a demand.“When we have a situation where there's a demand for the product and there's not enough being produced, then economic theory says suppliers will convert resources if they can and they'll produce what's necessary,” he said.And that’s exactly what these volunteer builders from across the U.S. are doing, using the resource available to help fill a need.“If you’re a family who needs a desk, you could contact your school and say are you in touch with any builders who are building desks and giving them away,” Gonsalves said. “Everyone can make a difference. If you have you can donate to a builder, they can make a desk for a kid.”As the desks are built, Janota and Gonsalves load them up and drive them off to where they are needed most.“To know that you're making just a little bit of a difference, because you wish you could help more. That student might need more than just a desk but this might just help this student be a little more successful this year,” Janota said.“Eric just started with a little idea. Maybe I can make a dozen desks and help some kids, and it’s just blossoming. To see the community pull together, it's really given me a lot of hope in a year that's been pretty terrible,” Gonsalves said. 3384

(AP) — A legal challenge to the Trump administration's planned border wall Tuesday hinged on whether the state of California and environmental groups can even fight such a project in lower courts.A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struggled with a law that gave the Homeland Security secretary broad authority to waive all laws to expedite constructing sections of border wall. PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida — Beaches across Florida are about to see a major change. Stretches of sand behind condos, hotels and homes, could soon be off limits to the public. Starting July 1, it will be up to private businesses and homeowners to decide if they want to restrict the public from using their portion of the sand from the high tide water line up. That means the dry sand adjacent to their building could be private, while the wet sand will remain public. It's an idea beachgoer Heather Towns does not agree with. The mom, from Indiana, comes to Redington Shores every year with her family.“I think it’s a beach. I think you should be able to walk wherever you want," she elaborated. “We come here every year for the past 4 years because it’s private.”Yet, come July 1, the sand that Towns and her family often visit behind a 4-story condo building, could be reserved for condominium owners only. Governor Rick Scott recently signed a bill allowing hotels, condos and other property owners to put up signs or even rope off their section of the beach, if they choose. Ron Gonzalez manages the Gulf Mariner Condos on Redington Shores. While he doesn’t agree with roping off the beach, he says protecting private property— which he pays taxes on— is critical.“It’s no different than if they came in and took your own personal backyard on the mainland. It is no different whatsoever," Gonzalez explained.The new law is the first of its kind in the country, and goes against Florida’s long standing "customary use" policy, which states that beaches belong to the public. “It’s everybody’s beach. It’s everybody’s ocean!," beach visitor Dennis Hansen said in disbelief when he learned about the new law. The law also takes away a local city or county’s ability to restrict private beaches. So the next time you pick a perfect spot along the sandy shore, don’t be surprised if a private property owner asks you to move. Craig Towns believes the law is only fair.“If you’re going to make the investment and spend the money and time down here, you deserve your own private space,” he said.His wife, Heather, disagrees, "I kinda like the open feel. Police in Omaha, Nebraska are looking for a suspect vehicle in connection with a shooting at the Irvington Walmart just before 5 p.m. Wednesday that left a 21-year-old woman dead.Kayviaun T. Nelson died after a shooting in the parking lot of the Walmart near 99th Street and Military Avenue, just off Interstate 680, with a child reportedly in the vehicle. OPD are looking for a 2001 bronze Chevy Malibu with license plate VVT-545.Police closed down the Irvington Walmart for hours Wednesday evening while conducting their investigation around the store.Police said they believe some type of disturbance occurred at a different location and the suspect in the shooting followed her to Walmart.Officers later worked with store management to clear all customers from the Walmart location just off Interstate 680 North and prevent anyone else from entering the location. OPD said they expected the store to be closed for a few hours while they review surveillance video. An OPD forensics unit arrived at the scene just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. 1116
