The U.S. Army hasn't been able to do in-person recruiting at events because of the pandemic, so its esports team has been stepping in to fill the gap, increasing their presence online.“When we're streaming on different platforms like Twitch or Mixer or YouTube or even Facebook, you're going to see more frequency of that for soldiers showcasing their skillsets in different games or playing a game just casually for anyone to come in and have a conversation,” said Sgt. 1st Class Chris Jones, general manager of the Army Esports Team.The team has also been running and sponsoring online tournaments during the pandemic. This is a shift from their efforts last year going to video gaming conventions across the country.They say the online tournaments get the word out about Army opportunities and then a recruiter can follow up with people playing.It's also attracting someone who may not have considered joining the military.“So, it’s coming from someone who may be super passionate about gaming and loves esports and then they find that we have a whole lot in common to show that there isn't a very specific person that enlists in the army that some people might believe,” said Jones.The soldiers on the Army Esports Team are assigned to do this as their full-time job in the military for up to three years. As they work to recruit more people, one thing that's helping make up for the current shortfall is the number of people who are choosing to extend their time with the military. The second debate of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, hosted by CNN, will take place in Detroit on July 30 and 31, the Democratic National Committee announced Tuesday.The debate will bring the crowded field of Democratic candidates to the battleground state of Michigan, which President Donald Trump won in 2016.The debate will feature randomized lineups drawn from a maximum of 20 qualifying candidates. A total of 12 presidential primary debates are planned during the 2020 cycle. The first debate, hosted by NBC News, will be June 26-27 in Miami.The 2020 Democratic field is already large and diverse, with more than a dozen contenders in the race and other high-profile candidates, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams, still considering a run.Qualifying for the debates is based on a two-path system, determined by polling and grass-roots fundraising. The Democratic National Committee will pick at random who ends up on each day. Thousands of pro-gun rights activists converged around the Virginia Capitol on Monday to voice opposition to gun control legislation proposed by the Democratic-held legislature.Among the vocal critics of the bills were members of law enforcement, who used their official office to advocate against some of the proposals. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page its support for the protest. The sheriff’s office also posted photos of deputies in uniform holding a sign saying, “we support the second amendment.”“Great turnout for 2A rally in Richmond today! Standing room only!!” the post read. Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins also attended the rally to show his support. He said he would deputize gun owners if Virginia lawmakers move forward with gun legislation. It is unclear if said deputies would have arrest power.“My intent was to swear in thousands of auxiliary deputy sheriffs and make it legal for them to possess the weapons that they're trying to ban and restrict,” Jenkins said. Dozens of sheriffs in Virginia have stated that their departments would not enforce gun laws they feel are unconstitutional. Jenkins suggested, but would not directly answer, whether his department would enforce state laws involving gun control if Democrats move forward with legislation.“I'll have to make a determination if these laws they pass or a violation of that,” Jenkins said. Although thousands gathered in Richmond to protest gun legislation, Gov. Ralph Northam said there was a reason why Democrats were elected in Virginia.
