SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The South Bay continues to be devastated by the coronavirus, with several of the hardest hit ZIP codes in the region.According to San Diego County data, the hardest hit ZIP code is 92154. The area, which includes Otay Mesa and parts of Imperial Beach, has the most cases in all of the county. In the last 30 days, cases have jumped from 3,290 to 4,528. Over 1,200 of the cases in this ZIP code happened in the last month.Other ZIP codes in the region have more than doubled their case rate in recent weeks. These ZIP codes have a large Latino population; Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, making up a majority of the county's positive cases while only making up roughly 34% of the population.INTERACTIVE MAP: CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES IN SD COUNTYNancy Maldonado from the Chicano Federation said it's no surprise the region continues to see the high number in cases. Maldonado explained that many of those who live in the region are essential, frontline workers and often times live in multi-generational households. The Chicano Federation has distributed over 7,000 COVID-19 safety kits to the community, including things like masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers.Maldonado said the focus of the federation has been to continue raising awareness about this virus, encouraging testing, and encouraging the community to stay home during the upcoming holidays. 1415

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The weather has recently taken a turn for sunny and warm, making for the perfect day at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Though the academic school year begins Monday, most UC San Diego students have a few more days before they have to log onto their online classes. But, that’s not the only changes students are dealing with this semester.Student Anthony Sanchez said nothing seems normal this semester. Going into his second year, he’s adapting to changes the university has made to try and prevent the spread of the coronavirus on campus.“I understand why they have to do it and I understand and agree with it. But from the student perspective, I’m 19, and it’s not really a fun thing to go through right now,” Sanchez said.Ninety percent of UC San Diego classes will be held virtually, and there will be many students like Sanchez that will be logging on from campus housing. He’s hoping this semester will go a lot smoother than last semester.Sanchez added, “This fall, I’m expecting it to be better in terms of how it’s structured. Because a lot of teachers were going on the fly and setting up lectures and scheduling as it was going. I’m expecting it to be more organized.”Sanchez told ABC 10News that the school was organized when it came to students moving into campus housing. There were about 7,500 students that returned to campus. The move-in days were spread out over 10 days to space people out. Each student could only bring two people to help them move. Each student was also given a coronavirus test, and Sanchez said he got his results within 48 hours. To help control the spread of COVID-19 on campus, the university also launched a voluntary program that utilizes smartphone technology to notify students if they may have been exposed. As for Sanchez, and what’s ahead for this fall quarter, he said he’ll just work on following the rules and saying positive to get through the year.“I guess I’m just going to have to make it the best that I can with what I can. It should be interesting,” Sanchez said.As far as testing, all students that live in on-campus housing and those that attend classes on campus are required to get tested for the coronavirus twice a month. 2092

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This year Comic-Con celebrates its 50th anniversary. Only five people have attended the convention every single year. One of them is noted author and television writer Mark Evanier.Evanier began writing comic books when he was a teenager in the 1960's, including the comics featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. His mentor was comic book legend Jack Kirby, who created or co-created many of the genre's most famous characters, such as Captain America, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. It was Kirby who first told Evanier that a group of fans in San Diego were planning a comic convention at the El Cortez Hotel."I thought it was a great idea," Evanier told 10News in an interview from his office in Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would get as large as it did. I thought maybe we'll have 400, 500 people there."While Evanier thought it would be a niche convention, even in its early days Kirby saw the potential. "He said this a long time ago when this was a nutty idea to say. He said Comic-Con is going to take over the city of San Diego each year," Evanier recalled.Early supporters of the convention included Marvel creator Stan Lee and science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Comic-Con moved into the San Diego Convention Center in 1991, soon expanding to take over the ballrooms at the surrounding hotels.Evanier has had a big role at the convention over the 50 years. He is a frequent moderator of panels and a guest of honor at many events. He believes the convention will remain in San Diego for the long term (Comic-Con International recently signed an extention through 2024). This is despite the fact that Comic-Con is facing growing competition for the biggest stars and events. Other conventions have launched in cities across the country, and some companies, including Disney, have created their own events. "Yes, there are conventions that are trying to be bigger or wish they could be Comic-Con," Evanier said. "Those are all commercially run. The Comic-Con we go to in San Diego is a non-profit organization."Evanier is scheduled to moderate more than a dozen panels during this year's anniversary convention. 2171
