KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Memorial Day travel may be more difficult in 2018 than it has been in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.The company released its 2018 Memorial Day travel forecast ahead of the holiday known as the informal kickoff to summer.AAA said 2018 will see a near-record number of travelers, with more than 41.5 million people expected to take a trip.That’s nearly 5 percent more than 2017, with an additional 2 million people traveling in planes, trains and cars.According to INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, travel delays could be up to three times longer, becoming especially bad on the Thursday and Friday before the holiday as travelers mix with work-week commuters.Most travelers will take a car to their destination — 36.6 million to be exact. KANSAS CITY, Kansas — A second company associated with Schlitterbahn has been named in a newly unsealed criminal indictment.Henry & Sons Construction is listed as a co-defendant in the murder case of 10 year old Caleb Schwab.The boy died on the Verruckt water slide in 2016.According to the indictment, Henry & Sons was the design and construction company for Verruckt.Reviews posted online by people who identify themselves as former employees raise safety concerns before the Schwab tragedy. On the job website Indeed.com, a person who identifies himself as a former welder for Henry & Sons submitted a February 2015 review for the company.The review claims management would ignore issues or "let them pass" like damaged work equipment.The welder also says managers wouldn't require a safety harness to work six feet off the ground and they "just wanted to get the job done no matter how risky it could be."Other review headlines include "Unsafe Working Environment", "Lack of Management Skills" and "Unorganized."At least one poster, however, gave the company five stars, calling it "an amazing place to work." The latest indictment states company owner Jeff Henry hired a man named John Hunsucker as a consultant for the operation and safety of Verruckt.But Hunsucker told investigators that while he could make suggestions, it was only Henry who made the decisions.The indictment further says Henry never asked Hunsucker to check if the water slide met industry safety standards, which the indictment claims in many ways it did not. 1587

(KGTV) – A man who reportedly tried to hit his girlfriend with a pickaxe was taken into custody after a standoff at a La Jolla Shores home.At around 10:40 a.m. Thursday, San Diego police officers were called to a house in the 2500 block of Ellentown Road after receiving reports of a domestic violence incident.10News learned a man inside reportedly threatened his girlfriend with a pickaxe, prompting her to leave. The unidentified man remained inside and refused police orders to come out."When we first got here, he was not communicating with us, he was just inside the house, yelling and screaming and banging against the wall," said SDPD Captain Tina Williams.While officers tried to persuade him to surrender, sections of Ellentown Road were shut down due to the police activity.At times the man appeared in the windows of the home holding the ax and knives, according to Williams. He also started a debris fire on top of his stove, sending smoke billowing from the house. Shortly after 1 p.m., the man went to the backyard, where police took him into custody without incident, according to Williams.The man was booked on suspicion of attempted assault with a deadly weapon and felony domestic violence battery.The victim was not seriously injured.Williams said the incident was not the first time police had been called to the house. "Earlier this week, we did respond out here... he was out in the middle of the street causing an altercation," she said. (KGTV) — A La Jolla woman may have new evidence that the iconic sea wall at the Children's Pool is increasingly crumbling.Architectural historian Diane Kane spent time in 2017 and 2018 taking photos of different parts of the sea wall in an effort to earn it a historical designation. She recently went back to take more and found that the wall's walking path is increasingly disintegrated, and its railings even more rusted over. RELATED: Coastal Commission approves permit to protect seals during pupping season"I don't know if we had a particularly strong winter last year or if this is just at a point where it's had deferred maintenance for so long that it's really starting to go quickly," Kane said.Ellen Browning Scripps donated the wall in 1931, creating what's now known as the Children's Pool. Kane, a trustee of the La Jolla Community Planning Association, says a historic designation could help generate funds to preserve the sea wall. She spent two years writing a historic report, which she submitted to the National Register of Historic Places.
