SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family grieved the loss of a father, mother and daughter after a raging fire at their Logan Heights home in October.Thursday evening Aunt Rosa Cortes explained how the two surviving children, Wendy, 23, and Angel, 16, were faring. She described areas of Wendy's back and shoulder healing from the burns, saying her skin is getting it's color back.She said her niece and nephew are having a hard time sleeping, saying in Spanish, "every noise, every sound scares them."The fire ignited October 13th, around 4:30 a.m.. Neighbors woke up to screams. Ultimately the father, Jose Antonio Romero Mayo, 44, Daughter Iris, 21, and mother, Nicolasa Mayo-Cortes, 46, died from their injuries.Aunt Rosa said Jose was her favorite brother. She called him her protector.Now she's protecting his two surviving children, saying they can continue staying with her as long as they need.Thursday the family reunited inside Faith on 54th in Oak Park.Cortes said the caskets remained closed and she didn't want to remember them the way they died.Her nephew, Wilber Romero, 26, was arrested on Arson and Homicide charges.She said Wendy and Angel haven't been told about their brother's possible involvement, instead waiting for them to heal before asking questions.Cortes said they need help, psychologically and monetarily to move forward. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in over two decades, there will be a new San Diego County Supervisor for District 1. Nora Vargas will be the first Latina to ever serve on the Board of Supervisors. The Democrat will take over for Supervisor Greg Cox, who is termed out. She beat her Democratic opponent, state Sen. Ben Hueso, by roughly 13%. Nora Vargas, a Chula Vista resident, said her background is in health care and education. She's served on the board at Southwestern College since 2013; she's been board president since 2018. She's also an executive at Planned Parenthood. Vargas said her top priority as she heads into office is the COVID-19 pandemic. District 1 primarily serves the South Bay, which is one of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in the entire county. "For me, it’s really important that we find a balance -- how do we make sure that our small businesses are thriving, that they stay open but at the same time that our communities are healthy and safe? That has to be a priority," explained Vargas. Vargas was born in Tijuana and raised in Chula Vista where she became a U.S. citizen. As the first Latina to serve on the board, she hopes she won't be the last. "I see that as a big responsibility but also as a great opportunity to have dialogue about the issues that really matter for our communities," said Vargas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dog owners who live in Normal Heights are worried about the future of the off-leash dog park at Ward Canyon.Earlier this month, signs appeared saying the large-dog area would be closed through the end of March 2020. People who use the park say it's because a few neighbors complained about the noise to the local Advisory Committee.Because the large-dog area is closed, all sizes of dogs have been sharing the small-dog area next to it."It's really crowded," says dog owner Christina Ardon. "When people get off work, everyone's over here. It's a little bit of a madhouse.""It's intimidating to smaller dogs," says Jason Douglas-Hiley. "They won't come into the park because they're afraid of the large dogs harassing the smaller dogs."Meanwhile, the City of San Diego has plans to renovate the entire park. Renderings show the area where the large-dog park currently sits would be turned into a community garden. The small-dog park would be expanded.But, City Councilmember Chris Ward's office says there is no funding for that project, and no timetable for when it could be added to the budget.People who use the park say they're afraid it will disappear while the project sits in limbo."To have to wait 2-5 years for them to construct a new park is a lifetime for a dog," says Douglas-Hiley.Park supporters have started a petition, asking the city to safeguard the small-dog area and also fence off a different portion of Ward Canyon for large dogs to use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Drug maker Moderna announced it had started the process of testing its COVID-19 vaccine on children ages 12 to 17. The company dosed the first adolescents Thursday.“I think all of us are interested in getting control of this pandemic, and I think one of the opportunities here is to be able to immunize children also,” said Dr. Stephen Spector. He leads Moderna’s Phase 3 clinical trial on adults at UC San Diego. “We’re interested in participating; we haven’t heard yet from the sponsor.”Spector is also a pediatrician and said generally, children tolerate viral vaccines better than adults. This study will answer many important questions.“Are there possible adverse effects in children that weren’t seen in adults, and will they be more severe?” he said.“The primary concerns now are whether or not the vaccine will be safe in children, and whether it will provide the same immune response in children as was seen in adults.”Spector said once those factors have been determined, the vaccine can likely be approved to be used on children.“Because we already know the vaccine works in adults, given the immune response will be a determinant of vaccine efficacy, you see that in children, then the vaccine can be approved for them as well,” he explained.Data released by Moderna showed the vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was 94 percent in adult participants, and the company has requested emergency use authorization from the FDA.“I’m not going to minimize that there have been some side effects, but they’re usually short-lasting, maybe a day or two of three days at most,” he said. “The fact that the vaccine is over 90 percent effective really puts it in the same realm as measles, rubella, and other kinds of vaccines that have been tremendously successful in containing viral infections.”Moderna will split the participants into two separate groups, half getting the placebo and the other half getting two vaccine shots 28 days apart.The company hopes to enroll 3,000 young people in the study, with a goal of generating data in the spring of 2021 and potentially vaccinating kids shortly after, in time for the next school year.“At this point, there are convincing data that the vaccine works, the FDA will review that data next week, and the expectation is there will be an emergency use approval by the end of next week for the vaccine,” said Spector. 2389

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Fans and players on Petco Park's field fled as hundreds of bees swarmed near the Padres' dugout Sunday afternoon.At about 4:06 p.m., in the bottom of the 3rd inning, Fox Sports reported a queen bee landed on their microphone and hundreds of bees followed suit."It made my skin crawl," Padres Fan Kel Loftis said."Out of the blue all of the sudden you saw everybody running off the field," Padres Fan Bob Pollack said.As fans saw the area clear out, some were concerned for their family's safety, "it was kinda crazy like what's going on?" Loftis said. As a military man, he was concerned something more serious was happening.Then everyone in the stadium saw the television screens with a close up on the swarm. "Between [Austin] Hedges, [Josh] Naylor and [Glenn] Hoffman, you know the third base coach, I was wondering who was more panicked," Loftis said chuckling.Padres Catcher Austin Hedges was seen wearing a Deadpool mask, sweatshirt and holding two bats, seemingly ready to battle the bees.
