President-elect Joe Biden will not be sworn into office until January 20, but it appears he is taking action now to do what he can to control the record-breaking spread of the coronavirus.Biden will announce a coronavirus task force on Monday, according to comments he made Saturday night. "On Monday, I will name a group of leading scientists and experts as transition advisors to help take the Biden-Harris COVID plan and convert it into an action blueprint that starts on January 20th, 2021. That plan will be built on a bedrock of science. It will be constructed out of compassion, empathy, and concern," Biden said during a speech Saturday night. The announcement about this team comes before other traditional presidential transition team announcements, like potential cabinet members and senior White House staff.Aides to Biden tell media outlets the task force plans to hold frequent televised briefings on the crisis. The task force will be led by three people at this point; former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, former Food and Drug Administration Commissioner David Kessler and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith of Yale University, a Biden campaign official told NBC, CNN, and Axios. There will reportedly be 12 members of the team."Our work begins with getting COVID under control. We cannot repair the economy, restore our vitality, or relish life’s most precious moments — hugging a grandchild, birthdays, weddings, graduations, all the moments that matter most to us — until we get this virus under control," Biden said. As America voted this week, new coronavirus cases first set a record above 100,000 in a day, and then blew past that reaching above 120,000 new cases in a day.Scientists and health experts have been warning this fall and winter could be “painful,” with Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly saying over the last month that the country’s daily coronavirus cases and hospitalizations were going in the “wrong direction” ahead of the winter months.According to Johns Hopkins University data, new daily cases in 47 states and the D.C. area are rising at least 5 percent a day.As of Saturday night, more than 237,000 Americans had died from the coronavirus. 2176

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Fund for the Animals Wildlife Center is at capacity while it cares for a record number of patients. At the center, experts rehabilitate animals they hope to release back into the wild. Most of the predators are kept in the back of the 13 acre property to keep humans from imprinting on them, affecting their ability to survive after release.Staff take extreme care and 'secretly' feed their animals. From January 1to July 1, the center cared for 588 animals. As of Friday, they're currently caring for more than 100, and at capacity. Some of their animals documented in pictures provided to 10News, like an orphaned badger, the first badger the center has had in 20 years. They also have a Great-Horned Owl which was hit by a car."Our patients are one of three things, they're unfortunately orphaned, or ill or injured," director Matt Anderson said. They've seen 35 percent more patients compared to the same time last year, meaning they're caring for 154 more animals."It's what we call baby season, everybody expects it, it's a hectic time, all hands to the deck, the staff are wonderful so we're pushing forward and already have some success stories," Anderson said. The Center is funded through donations and The Humane Society of the US, those dollars critical now more than ever. Another factor behind the boom, higher rain levels meant more food all the way up the food chain."Lots more plant life, and lots more to eat for the prey items that our predators eat," he said that's also what brings predators into our neighborhoods."They're really really good at finding their own food, and so it's best to let them alone in their habitat and enjoy them from a distance," Anderson said.Reminding us how important it is to leave the animals alone so they can survive, go back into that sensitive ecosystem and keep it in balance. 1863

President Trump took a shot at his former lawyer and self-proclaimed "fixer" Michael Cohen this morning, hours after Cohen pleaded guilty to eight felony charges — including a campaign finance charge he says came at the President's request."If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!" Trump tweeted.RELATED:?Michael Cohen pleads guilty, implicates TrumpTrump also falsely claimed in a later tweet that Cohen's campaign finance violations were "not a crime" — despite the fact that Cohen had agreed to plead guilty to the charges. The eight charges to which Cohen agreed to plead guilty included campaign finance violation charges relating to hush money payments to two women who had affairs with Trump.Wednesday's tweets were the first times Trump had directly addressed Cohen by name since the attorney pleaded guilty to eight charges on Tuesday afternoon. He chose not to address the issue at a campaign rally in West Virginia last night.   1045

Protesting an animal rights protest, a chef and co-owner at Antler Kitchen & Bar in Toronto began butchering a raw deer leg with a sharp knife in the restaurant's window. It all started with a friendly chalkboard feud with another local restaurant down the street. According to The Globe and Mail, Antler used its sidewalk sign to write what it thought was a harmless food joke."Venison is the new kale."“There was no offense meant,” Micahel Hunter, the deer-carving chef and co-owner of Antler Kitchen & Bar, told The Globe and Mail. “I’m not trying to promote a meat diet. I have a lot of respect for the vegan diet because I know how hard it is.”But, Marni Ugar, who already had experience organizing animal rights protests, took offense. She saw the sign and organized a rally, the Canadian publication wrote.A group of animal rights activists got together several times in front of the restaurant, chanting "you're a murderer" and "you've got blood on your hands," according to The Globe and Mail. After three months of listening to chants of murder echo through his restaurant came Hunter's breaking point - a counterprotest in full view of the animal rights activists."I figured I'll show them," Hunter told The Globe and Mail. "I'm going to have my own protest."Then protesters held up signs in front of the window as he carved. One had big, pink letters - MURDER. Another said, "Animals are not ours to use."On its website, the locavore restaurant, which prides itself on using local and regional ingredients, says its menu "is rural to its roots" and "aims to celebrate the wild culinary delights of Canada." Menu items, which the protesters clearly do not approve of, include rack of deer and a Game Burger made with wild boar, bison and deer. Even the pappardelle has braised rabbit. On occasion, the restaurant "cook[s] game meats over an open fire pit, in true rustic style."It's clear the restaurant opposes factory farming and prides itself on using all parts of the animal. But Ugar said an animal is an animal. On a street full of butcher shops and other restaurants serving meat, she picked Antler as her protesting focal point to debunk what she calls a myth that raising animals in pastures free from hormones and antibiotics is more ethical than factory farming, she told The Daily Globe and Mail. She said it's not ethical-free meat. After Hunter's counterprotest, he told The Globe and Mail he didn't feel good about it.Hunter and Ugar have begun a conversation over the issue. The Canadian publication said Ugar offered to reduce the frequency of the protests to once a month if Hunter would agree to put a sign in the window: "Attention, animals' lives are their right. Killing them is violent and unjust, no matter how it's done."Hunter responded with plans to introduce a vegan menu, and invited Ugar's group to join him on a foraging trip, The Globe and Mail said. Ugar has not yet responded, but said she is thinking it over.According to The Globe and Mail, the ordeal has had a direct impact on Antler - reservation requests are up. 3136

Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted Tuesday on charges related to the misuse of 0,000 worth of campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records. The charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and conspiracy were the culmination of a Department of Justice investigation that has stretched for more than a year, during which the Republican congressman from California has maintained his innocence.Republican Party leaders had long worried that with a potential indictment looming, Hunter's traditionally safe district which makes up much of eastern San Diego County could be at risk of Democratic takeover in November's midterm election.Hundreds of thousands of dollars in unusual charges on Hunter's campaign credit card had come under scrutiny, including among other things, an Italian vacation, dental work, purchases at a surf shop, and huge tabs at bars in restaurants in the San Diego and Washington DC areas. Among the most mocked charges was airfare for a pet rabbit to fly with the family, which an aide said was mistakenly charged to the wrong credit card.Hunter, a former Marine, has reimbursed his campaign account some ,000 since the Federal Election Commission first questioned spending on video games in 2016, according to Federal Election Commission records."There was wrong campaign spending, but it was not done by me," Hunter told KGTV-10, a San Diego television station, earlier this year. His comments have cast blame on his wife and former campaign manager, Margaret Hunter, who also made charges on the campaign credit card.Hunter's lawyers said last year that "any mistakes were made they were strictly inadvertent and unintentional."California's 50th District is a staunchly Republican district with many current and former military families that covers much of eastern San Diego County. The Congressman's father, Duncan L. Hunter, represented parts of the district (which changed after redistricting) and has rallied donors and supporters to his son's side.Hunter's Democratic challenger, Ammar Campa-Najjar, a former department of labor aide in the Obama administration, has repeatedly outraised him. Many Hunter allies believe he will stay in his House seat while fighting the charges.Even if a federal candidate chooses to withdraw from contention, their name will remain on the ballot unless they seek removal of their name from a judge, according to the California Secretary of State's office. At this late juncture, there is no possibility of a write-in campaign. Only Hunter and Campa-Najjar will appear on the November ballot, since they were the top vote-getters in California's top-two primary in June. This is a breaking news story and will be updated.   2789
