SAN DIEGO (CNS) - City officials broke ground Monday on the Bay Terraces Senior Center, a project that local residents have advocated for since the 1990s. Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmembers Monica Montgomery and Chris Cate were on hand to mark the beginning of construction on the 3,400-square-foot facility. Once completed, the million senior center is set to include amenities such as a multipurpose room and a commercial kitchen. The facility will serve seniors in Paradise Hills, Bay Terraces and Skyline, according to the city. ``A decade ago, city leaders laid down a thin layer of gravel in preparation for a senior center in southeastern San Diego that was promised but never delivered,'' Faulconer said. ``Today we are making good on that promise and building a center that will be as great as the communities it will serve.'' Faulconer revived the project in 2016 and city officials expect it to be the city's first building to produce as much energy as it uses by leveraging solar panels on the facility's roof. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A transient who allegedly overpowered a woman in the East Village, dragged her into some bushes and sexually assaulted her before running away pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three felony charges, including assault with intent to commit rape.Gary Ryan Cushinberry, 51, who is on felony probation for robbery and failing to appear in court, was ordered held without bail.Late on the evening of Nov. 5, Cushinberry allegedly grabbed a 26-year-old pedestrian walking by herself in the 400 block of 13th Street, pulled her off the sidewalk and assaulted her before fleeing.Detectives identified Cushinberry -- a recent transplant from Indiana who has been living on the streets of San Diego -- as the alleged perpetrator by means of ``several tips and leads,'' Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Wednesday for help in tracking down a motorist involved in a fatal hit-and-run on a Clairemont- area street last month.The unidentified driver's black four-door sedan struck and killed 44- year-old Shane Moore as he was crossing the street in the 5500 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard shortly before 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22, according to San Diego police and the county Medical Examiner's Office.The motorist continued driving and fled the area to the east.
